The consensus estimate on the company's full-year earnings has decreased by 39 cents over the past 30 days to 84 cents per share.

Kennametal Inc.'s (KMT) third-quarter earnings per share of 1 cent, excluding charges, matched the consensus despite a steep fall in revenue.

Shares are up more than 5% today.

A week earlier, the company had warned it would earn about a penny per share in the latest quarter as global markets deteriorated more than it had expected.

Revenue decreased 36% to $441 million.

For the June quarter, Kennametal sees organic sales down by more than 40% from the year-ago period. It expects operating results, excluding charges, to be lower than its March quarter.

Kennametal is taking further steps to cut back on costs and expects another $54 million in charges over the next 6 to 9 months.

Meanwhile, 6 of the 11 covering brokerage analysts reduced their full-year earnings projections in the last month, pulling the current-year forecast lower by 24 cents to $1.06 per share.
