Pasko: Dvorishchi ain’t no Cape Town

Robert Amsterdam (November 10th, 2009) Writes:

The last week of October was a tense time for the bureaucrats at Minprirody, Russia's Ministry for the Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources, and naturally for Minister Yuri Petrovich Trutnev. He went all the way to Cape Town, South Africa to participate in the work of the eighth session of the mixed intergovernmental committee for trade and economic cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Africa.

And it wasn't questions

At the moment, I am in detention and being investigated as part of an entirely fabricated case. I am accused of causing bodily harm to someone who assaulted me without cause in a bazaar. It is obvious to me that the assault was set up with the help of a non-staff assistant to the police and that everything from the apprehension to the accusation charges were planned and organised

War Games in Central Asia, Minus Belarus and Uzbekistan

Robert Amsterdam (October 16th, 2009) Writes:
medved101509.jpgEverybody has probably already heard about the first exercises of the CSTO rapid reaction force in Kazakhstan today, where President Dmitry Medvedev wanted to make sure he was the most well dressed autocrat to show up to the party.  I do often wonder if the Kremlin hired the same people George W. Bush used to use to stage manage these kinds of Hollywood-esque media performances.  From Reuters:Dressed in combat fatigues, the leaders of Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan looked on as the force carried out a mock attack to destroy "insurgents" who had taken control of a chemical plant. Smoke rose from a dew-drenched firing range in the Kazakh steppe, revealing paratroopers landing from helicopters and storming a building ...

Today in Russian Business – October 16, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (October 16th, 2009) Writes:
According to the FT, Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan have abandoned their attempt to join the World Trade Organization as a single customs union, after WTO members made clear the unprecedented suggestion would elongate the process by some years.  The trio will reportedly attempt to join simultaneously.  French retailer Carrefour has made a swift exit from Russia, only four months after the opening of its first store.  Bad news for Avtovaz: Sberbank and VTB have declined an offer to take stakes in the company in exchange for debt.  Gazprombank had its worst month of the year in September, posting losses of $529 million, the sixth time this year that the bank has posted a monthly loss.  Italy's Cremonini Group is set to open a $148 million meat-processing plant in the Moscow region to produce hamburgers for McDonalds by ...

RA’s Daily Russian News Blast – October 12, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (October 12th, 2009) Writes:
r.jpegTODAY: United Russia sweep polls at regional elections; accusation of vote-rigging fly.  Mitvol receives unusual delivery.  Medvedev had no time for Yushchenko at CIS summit; positive on Obama's peace prize; Ecuador looking for weapons deals?; Russia bids to host World CupWith almost 90% of the votes counted in Moscow, the city's election Committee has reported that the United Russia party has garnered 66.10% of the vote, with the Communist Party coming in second at 13.28%, sufficient for three seats in the 35-member chamber.  Vladimir Putin's party is apparently likely to have dominated in other regions.  The Guardian reports on allegations of vote-rigging; talk of which has seen leading opposition candidates scorn Medvedev's promise to uphold ...

Total, GdF-Suez Partner with KMG – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 7th, 2009) Writes:
Total (TOT) and GdF-Suez recently signed a Heads of Agreement (HOA) partnering with KazMunaiGas (KMG), Kazakhstan’s state oil company, for the development of the Khvalynskoye field. Following the agreement, Total and GdF-Suez are holders of 25% interest (Total 17%, GdF-Suez 8%) in the field, from the initial 50% stake held by KazMunaiGas. Lukoil (operator) is the owner of the remaining 50% interest in the project.   Khvalynskoye is a conventional gas condensate field located offshore in the Caspian Sea on the border between Kazakhstan and Russia. The gas produced from this field will be transported to Russia.   Through this agreement Total increased its presence in Kazakhstan (especially Caspian Sea) – a region that is expected to play an important role in counterbalancing Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ (OPEC’s) dominance of world oil markets in the coming two decades. The company is already a partner of KMG developing ...

Energy Blast – October 7, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (October 7th, 2009) Writes:
Russia has denied yesterday's report in the Independent that the country discussed changing the dollar as the global currency of oil; France has called it speculation.  Iran's finance minister Shamseddin Hosseini says he has occasionally discussed a move away from the dollar with other nations, but such a shift would require agreement from everyone.  France and Kazakhstan have signed a flurry of deals: Total will acquire 17% and GDF Suez 8% of the Caspian Sea Khvalynskoye natural gas field.  Naftogaz says that it has paid in full its September bill.  Despite a catastrophic financial situation, the company is ready to meet its gas obligations this winter.  Reuters has a feature on the Nenet tribespeople of the Yamal Peninsula for whom Gazprom's plans for Arctic plunder are a threat to their very existence.  According to ...

Energy Blast – September 28, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (September 28th, 2009) Writes:
Gazprom is set to bid for gas and oil fields in Iraq with Turkey's state-run oil company Turkish Petroleum Corporation.  Rosneft, Lukoil and Gazprom Neft will also participate in bids.  Venezuela's Science and Technology Minister Jesse Chacon has asserted that it is Russia that is helping the country search for uranium, not Iran.  Iran's Oil Ministry has apparently said that the country needs $19 billion to finish uncompleted natural gas projects.  Gazprom Neft has filed a request to the anti-trust watchdog to buy 100% of oil company Sibir Energy.  Kazakhstan, which hopes to increase two-fold its oil production over the next ten years, is in talks with Azerbaijan to establish new routes for delivering extra crude volumes to the Black Sea and is even considering a new pipeline.  The Moscow Times reports that Chinese investors are negotiating ...

Today in Russian Business – September 28, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (September 28th, 2009) Writes:
Ria-Novosti reports that first deputy prime minister Igor Shuvalov believes the path towards a customs union with Belarus and Kazakhstan is clear.  Bank of America Corp. has increased Russia's economic growth forecast for 2010 to 3.9% from 2.4%.  Citigroup Inc. estimates that Russia's economy will grow faster than previously estimated, according to Bloomberg.  Arabtec Holding has started foundation-test work on the Gazprom tower.  Sberbank may sell its stake in Opel to VEB, if a sale to GAZ Group falls through, Reuters reports.  President Medvedev has told German Chancellor Angela Merkel that he is willing to provide state guarantees for Opel investments in Russia, says Reuters.  A possible windfall for Avtovaz: the company may be assembling Nissan cars by 2012.  The Telegraph reports on tough times for the Lada.  The Times reports that Yelena ...
