Recently, Shaw Communications (SJR) announced that it has entered into a strategic agreement to acquire Mountain Cablevision Limited, based in Hamilton, Ontario and owned by the Boris Family.

The Boris family has been running the business for the last fifty years, which has approximately 41,000 cable subscribers, 28,000 Internet users and 27,000 telephone customers.

Shaw’s management declared that the purchase consideration will consist of cash and may also involve the issue of Class B Non-Voting Participating Shares of the company. The transaction is subject to approval by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Shaw has a strong foothold in western Canada, and the acquisition of Mountain Cablevision will allow the company to tap the market beyond western Canada into mostly eastern Canada, where the company has lower brand recognition. The move has given Shaw a stronghold in what used to be solely a Rogers Communications (RCI) market.

Shaw’s ongoing capital investments have helped it to expand its operations to include digital programming, Internet, Video-on-Demand (VOD), High Definition Television (HDTV), and digital phone. The company experienced subscriber growth across all its operations during the recently reported third quarter. Basic cable net subscriber additions were 9,622 to 2,283,526, Digital customers increased 110,810 to 1,187,183, and Internet and Digital Phone lines climbed by 24,625 to 1,650,959 and 54,633 to 774,009, respectively. DTH subscribers rose 1,580 to 898,213.

Overall subscriber growth in 2009 is faring better than 2008 and 2007. The growth rates are consistent with the historical trends. We maintain our Hold recommendation on the stock with a six-month price target of $16.75.
Read the full analyst report on "SJR"
Read the full analyst report on "RCI"
Zacks Investment Research

pThree of China’s largest wireless carriers are making a mad dash to bring the country’s wireless infrastructure into the 21st century with a widespread upgrade to so-called 3G networks./p
p3G networks enable high-speed, multimedia services packed with hefty margins for the carriers. Get in now on the program and you’re likely to see healthy returns as the networks come on line./p
p3G achieved legendary status in the U.S. and Europe when Apple announced a revised iPhone that was 3G compatible./p

But there are still some countries where Google plays second role and is well behind local search engine. For example in Russia the number one is Yandex and in China Baidu (BIDU).

Currently Baidu share accounts 60% (up from 58% y-o-y) of total searches compared to Google with 26% (up from 17% y-o-y). The question is if the leadership is sustainable. Google already started with introduction its sites in Chinese version. Good example can be Chinese version of Google Finance site. How important is Chinese market the following statistics show. 427 million people search in English and 233 million people in Chinese. Google CEO Eric Schmidt already announced last year the intention to be market leader in 5 years.

Many Internet users are more familiar with Baidu which started earlier and attracted visitors by facilitating access to free music. Download free MP3 files generates huge traffic and this is one of the most popular online activities. Another key driver is seen with educational business practices towards small businesses about keyword search and its monetizing it up front.

Investments in Chinese companies is a part of Google strategy how to expand in the country. Up to now they are focused on social networking projects and mobile Internet. Google invested in Tianya, social networking web site, and Xunlei Network Technology, video and games downloads provider.

http://stockweb.blogspot.com/atom.xml

CDC Corp.’s (CHINA) loss for the second quarter of 2008 was $0.10 per share. However, its adjusted EPS again exceeded market expectations. We still think CDC is well positioned to leverage the growth opportunities in the small-to-medium business enterprise software market and China’s online game market.

In addition, its stock is trading under book value and the company will continue to repurchase its shares. Overall, we don’t think its current stock price fully reflects the company’s intrinsic value. Therefore, we are maintaining our Buy rating on CDC shares.

With a differentiated combination of online games, mobile applications, and Internet portals and media services, CDC's New Media Business is positioned to take advantage of the burgeoning demand for online services and entertainment in the China market.

China has 253 million internet users as of June 30, 2008. The internet users are expected to increase at 15% annually in the next three years. It is expected that China’s online game market will grow 49% in 2008 over 2007. We forecast China’s online gaming market would grow to RMB 40.1 billion yuan by 2011.

However, the software business will continue to be pressured under current challenging market conditions. Pirated game servers will reduce the company’s revenue from online games. New games may not be as popular as the company expects. The recent earthquake in China will negatively affect its game business in the second quarter. Its expansion strategy through acquisitions or investments may be costly and may not be effective. Also, there is limited synergy between its software business and new media business.

NetEase.com’s (NTES) revenue and earnings for the second quarter exceeded market expectations due to strong growth from its online games and advertising business and business tax refund.

We think NetEase’s results demonstrate that it has the ability and experience to expand the life cycle of its online games despite the fierce competition in the Chinese online gaming market. However, we are concerned that NetEase’s current games have gotten long in the tooth, and new games may not be as successful as its current popular games. We need more time to confirm whether its growth momentum in the fourth quarter is sustainable in the future. Therefore, we are maintaining our Hold rating on NetEase.

The factors in the company’s favor are online gaming and advertising revenues. The potential opportunity for online usage in China is huge, with 253 million internet users. This means only 19% of its 1.3 billion citizens use the Internet as of June 2008.

Based on our estimate for fiscal year 2008 earnings per ADS, the stock is trading at 19.1x, which is well below the industry average and similar to its Chinese peers. Based on our estimate for fiscal year 2009 earnings per ADS, the company is trading at 17.4x, which is far below the industry average. Using a P/E multiple of 18.3x our fiscal year 2009 earnings per ADS estimate yields a target price of $25.25 which we believe reflects the company’s prospects.
