Zacks Market Commentaries (October 13th, 2009) Writes:
Mobile TeleSystems (MBT), Russia and Eastern Europe’s largest cellular operator, has reportedly acquired a 50.91% stake in Comstar-United TeleSystems (Comstar-UTS), a leading integrated telecommunication solution provider in Russia and the CIS.   The incumbent Russian telecom carrier has acquired the stake from AFK Sistema, a Russia-based financial and industrial holding company, for RUR39.15 billion (US$1.32 billion) having received all the necessary regulatory approvals for the transaction.   Comstar-UTS comprises fixed-line operator Moscow City Telephone Network (“MGTS") and STREAM-TV, a leading Russian cable TV and Internet service provider. The company holds a major share in the broadband and IPTV markets in Moscow. Comstar-UTS also offers value-added “Triple-Play" bundled (voice, Internet and pat-TV) services to its customers.    Comstar-UTS currently operates in 70 Russian cities, covering a total population of over 48 million people. At the end of first-half 2009, the company served 4.4 million fixed telephony subscribers, nearly ...

Time Warner Cable Does Wideband – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 30th, 2009) Writes:
Time Warner Cable Inc (TWC) has recently deployed its first next-generation DOCSIS 3.0 (also called Wideband) service in New York City. With this, TWC has established itself as a formidable player to counter the threat from high-speed FiOS network of Verizon Wireless (VZ). Earlier this month, the company has taken a decision to continue to roll-out switched digital video (SDV) in three major markets of Los Angeles, New York City (NYC) and Dallas. Deployment of SDV will free up bandwidth that can be used by TWC to offer 100 high-definition TV channels (HDTV), HD video-on-demand programs, and DOCSIS 3.0.   TWC will offer its residential tier Wideband service with 50 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream speed for $99.95. The company will also offer two commercial tier Wideband service. Together these services will cover 1.4 million subscribers in the NYC area.   The U.S. cable MSOs ...

How the Death of Big Telecom Will Reignite the Tech Boom

Contrarian Profits (September 23rd, 2009) Writes:

Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Verizon (NYSE:VZ) are dying a slow death…

Investors who realize this fact early could cash in on a brand new tech boom that could produce a new generation of high-tech millionaires not seen since the 1990s.

Comcast, Verizon and other government-protected duopolies won’t be around for your grandchildren to enjoy — at least not in their current forms. You see, companies like these are selling outdated services. And they’re more than reluctant to change their business models.

First, consider the home telephone. This beast is becoming scarcer by the day. In fact, mobile phone-only households are becoming the norm. Yet despite huge increases in wireless sales by traditional telecoms, it’s the wireline segment that keeps these blue chips in the black. More than half of Verizon and (NYSE:T) AT&T’s revenue comes directly from wireline sales.

For the old-school telecom giants, it’s all about infrastructure. They want to milk

AT&T Wins 3G Femtocell Race – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 22nd, 2009) Writes:
AT&T (T) became the first US wireless service provider to deploy 3G femtocell base station. The company has already started selling home base station radios in some select domestic markets, thus beating its closest rival Sprint Nextel (S) that was claiming to become the pioneer in deploying 3G home base stations.

The U.S. is likely to undergo a massive wave of 3G femtocell from the end of this year. Sprint began providing 2G CDMA femtocell since 2007. Last January, Verizon Wireless (VZ) launched its first 2G femtocell that does not support 3G EV-DO networks for faster download at home.

Femtocell is quickly emerging as a fundamental technology enabler in the deployment of next-generation (3G/4G) wireless network infrastructure. A femtocell is a small cellular base station, typically designed for use in a residential or small business environment. This access point communicates to the wireless service providers’ network

Comcast Rolls Out Business Wideband – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 9th, 2009) Writes:
Comcast Corp., (CMCSA) has launched its first next-generation high-speed voice and Internet service for small and medium sized businesses (SMB) in the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul . Leveraging on the DOCSIS 3.0 platform, this new service will provide downstream speeds of 100 Mbps and upstream speeds of 15 Mbps. DOCSIS 3.0 (also called Wideband network) is a digital channel bonding technique that creates one larger and faster logical pipe to support throughput of at least 100 Mbps.   Cable MSOs are facing fierce competition from telecom service providers. Telecom operators are quickly gaining market share from cable MSOs by offering Mobile TV and other high-speed broadband services to subscribers. Comcast alone lost 214,000 basic video customers in the previous quarter.  The U.S. telecom giants are gradually expanding their fiber-optic networks. Verizon Wireless (VZ) with FiOS network and AT&T (T) with U-Verse network ...
