AT&T Unveils New Pre-Paid Plan – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 12th, 2009) Writes:
AT&T (T) has introduced a new unlimited monthly calling plan for the prepaid wireless market. Starting today, customers subscribing to the company prepaid wireless services receive unlimited voice calls, instant messaging as well as text, picture and video messaging for just $60 a month. However, the plan does not cover iPhone users. Apart from the U.S., the new unlimited plan covers Mexico, Canada and over 100 countries worldwide. Roaming within the U.S. is free of cost. This prepaid rate plan is about 50% lower than the company’s regular postpaid unlimited (voice and text) service plan. AT&T offers its prepaid services under the "GoPhone" brand, which does not require the customer to sign long-term contracts and keep a minimum deposit. While the company remains a dominant player in the postpaid market (representing 86% of the company’s total net customer additions), it is struggling to retain customers in ...

Yahoo! Refocused – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 28th, 2009) Writes:
Yahoo! (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz is bent on refocusing the business, improving its image and bringing in some cash. Management has taken a number of actions to position the company for achievement of these objectives. The first was the disposal of non-core assets and acquisition of small-business targets that could help it augment its new business focus. To this end, the company has disposed off its 39% stake in China ’s largest e-commerce company, Alibaba.com, for $150 million. It has also put up for sale the Yahoo Small Business assets. Rumor has it that the company expects $350-500 million for the business, which has been the main hurdle so far. Renewed talk indicates that the sale could be completed soon. The small business division provides domains, email, Web hosting and other merchant services to customers. The company has made a couple of acquisitions this year. ...

Garmin Nuvifone Finds U.S. Carrier – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 28th, 2009) Writes:
A Garmin Ltd. (GRMN) spokesperson announced that the company had selected a carrier for the nuvifone G6, its new smartphone. Although the name of the carrier was not announced, rumor has it that it could be AT&T (T), the second-largest player in the U.S. The product will be manufactured by Taiwanese PC manufacturer Asustuk. Garmin expects the product to generate $100-200 million in revenue this year, which would add an incremental 4% to the top line. This means that Garmin would still be short of the one million unit mark this year. Although the company’s small size and vulnerability in the intensely competitive market could delay initial customer response, Asus is geared to crossing the million unit threshold in 2010. We believe that the success of the product could be tempered by AT&T’s commitment to Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, for which it has exclusive distribution ...

AOL Tries to Reinvent Itself – Zacks Tale of the Tape

Zacks Market Commentaries (June 11th, 2009) Writes:

Time Warner Inc. (TWX) has moved closer to divesting AOL, as the unit led by Tim Armstrong is now concentrating on expanding into the local online service market through strategic acquisitions.

AOL announced today that it was buying two small startup firms, Patch Media Corp and Going Inc, for less than $10 million each according to people close to the matter. While Patch helps local community sites publish news and information, Going offers information about local events across 30 cities in the U.S.

Armstrong, who joined AOL in April, said that local search would be the company's "core area of focus and investment" going forward, as it tries to expand around its popular Mapquest mapping service.

The Time Warner unit which is expected to be spun off as an independent company by the end of this year has been struggling to match pace with online search giants like Google
