Takeovers are big news in the market at the moment.

In fact, did you know that takeovers have the biggest one-day gain in stocks for any asset?

As my colleague – and takeover expert – Louis Basenese says, they’re “some of the safest companies you can own. According to FactSet Merger Stat LLC, the average one-day return for shareholders of the target company is 48%.”

Furthermore, Louis says, “Industries naturally go through cycles of consolidation – waves of mergers, acquisition and takeovers.”

Kazakhstan was once a nation of nomads wandering vast steppes. They herded cattle, goats and camels. On the country’s western edge lies the Caspian Sea. Towns grew up along the shore there, hauling in catches of sturgeon and black caviar.

But otherwise, Kazakhstan was an empty desert. Even in the days of the old Silk Road, traders would skirt Kazakhstan’s southern border rather than try to cross that hell of a desert. It was remote. Desolate. The Soviets used parts of the northeast to test nuclear weapons.

The Aral Sea, site of one of the greatest environmental disasters ever, is in Kazakhstan. A century ago, carp, perch, caviar-bloated sturgeon and much more filled the Aral Sea. Fisherman hauled hundreds of tons of fish per year, fed themselves and loaded trains full of fish headed to Moscow. Then the Communists had some harebrained scheme to use the water for irrigation.

Shoprite Holdings, owners of Shoprite stores, is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, with secondary listings on the Namibian (Namibian SE:SRH) and Zambian Stock Exchanges.  Shoprite operates in 17 countries across Africa, the Indian Ocean islands and southern Asia, and expects to start operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as to open more stores in Angola and Ghana.  Shoprite is the fifth largest company listed on the Namibian exchange, and is up 18.92% YTD. “The continent will produce excellent results over the long term. Allin Corporation (ALLN.OB), a Pittsburgh based, multi-faceted software/hardware solutions provider, announced another win Friday for its Interactive Media arm in the lucrative cruise ship interactive television market. Costa Crociere, Italy’s (and Europe’s) number one cruise vacation line will have Allin provide the interactive television solution for its two newest and most advanced cruise ships, the Costa Luminosa and the Costa Pacifica, scheduled for delivery in spring 2009. The projects will be Allin’s seventh and eighth installation for Costa, and will include several advanced communication features.

The Costa Luminosa and Costa Pacifica systems will provide a variety of in-cabin entertainment and information options, including the ability to pause and bookmark on-demand movies, preview and purchase shore excursions, and learn about onboard offers and events. Der Spiegel has an interesting article on Turkey's precarious position as a critical energy transit country now that Georgia has been virtually knocked off the map (in terms of investment). It seems that ultra-nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who's always good for a laugh, has offered both to annex Turkey as well as trade them natural gas for nuts. "No one loves you the way I love you," the thick-set populist who speaks fluent Turkish, recently sang before a Turkish audience in Istanbul. Zhirinovsky, a graduate of Oriental studies, visited Turkey for the first time in 1962 as a translator for the Soviet Union's State Committee for Exports. During his visit he was arrested for spreading "communist propaganda" and spent 17 days in jail.
