Stock Market News for October 23, 2009 – Market News

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 23rd, 2009) Writes:

After sliding for two successive days, stocks managed to find some footing and ended Thursday with impressive gains as companies from McDonald’s to PNC Financial reported solid quarterly earnings.  A mixed bag of economic reports notwithstanding, the Dow average once again scaled the 10,000 mark as components Travelers Cos, 3M Co., and AT&T Inc. posted stronger-than-expected results.

Investors, looking for bargains, picked up financial shares as many banks noted lower loan losses.  Travelers (NYSE:TRV) surged almost 8% after reporting a three-fold jump in quarterly profit.  Travelers, together with McDonald’s (NYSE:MCD), led the Dow average higher.  AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), also a Dow component, rose 0.6% after reporting better-than-expected profit.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 132 points, or 1.3%, to close at 10,081.31 and the S&P 500 index rose 11 points, or 1%.  The tech-heavy NASDAQ, limited by late-session, downward guidance from eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY), gained 14 points, or 0.7%.

Capacity’s Comeback – Analyst Blog

Dirk Van Dijk (September 16th, 2009) Writes:
In August, industrial production rose 0.8% from July, and the July increase was revised from a gain of 0.5% to a gain of 1.0%. In manufacturing, production was up 0.6% following an upwardly revised gain of 1.4% in July (was 1.0%). Output at the country’s mines rose 0.5% following a 0.6% gain in July. Utility output, which can be affected as much by the weather as by economic activity, rose 1.9% in August following a 1.6% decline in July. These increases are a big turnaround from what we had been seeing. On a year-over-year basis, total industrial production is still down 10.7%, with manufacturing down 12.2% and mining down 10.5%. Utility output is basically unchanged on a year-over-year basis, down only 0.1%. Having two back-to-back gains in industrial production is highly significant, and constitutes definitive proof, in my opinion, that the recession is over. Breaking the release ...

Fitch Cuts Honeywell Outlook – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 20th, 2009) Writes:
Fitch Ratings recently lowered its outlook on Honeywell International Inc. (HON) as it expects the defense contractor’s weak operating performance that began late last year to continue through 2009.

Lower earnings and cash flow have resulted in a leverage which is above normal levels for maintaining an “A" assigned to the company’s long-term default rating, unsecured bank credit and senior unsecured debt program. Fitch has an "F1" rating on Honeywell’s short-term issuer default and commercial papers.

Although the global recession has hurt the company’s short-term outlook and 2009 results, Honeywell plans to continue its investments to ensure growth when the economy rebounds. It intends to reduce debt to help limit the impact of weaker financial results on leverage in 2009. The company continues to target strong financial metrics to improve its financial flexibility and ability to maintain a solid competitive edge.

Honeywell Revenues Drop – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 3rd, 2009) Writes:

Honeywell (HON) reported a 21.6% drop in second quarter sales year over year with net sales of $7.6 billion. The company reported declines across all regions but importantly sequential growth in the emerging regions of China, India, and the Middle East.

Segment margins declined 90 basis points to 12.3% and the company saw good margin performance from Automation and Control Systems, up 70 basis points in the quarter, which marked the third quarter in a row of margin expansion. It was an impressive quarter from Special Materials where segment margin was up 150 basis points.

These gains were more than offset by the expected weakness at Transportation Systems, which was down 800 basis points and Aerospace, down 160 basis points. Aerospace continues to experience soft conditions in the commercial after-market.

Net income in the quarter was $0.60 per share, compared to $0.96 per share in the second quarter of 2008, a decline
