Throwing A Cat Among The Pigeons!

Contrarian Profits (June 15th, 2009) Writes:

Russia’s Fin Min talks up the dollar!  Currencies, commodities, stocks all lose ground…  Who’s car is uglier … Gold hit a 3-week low… And Now… Today’s Pfennig! Good day… And a Marvelous Monday to you! How about that weekend? I actually didn’t get a chance to experience much of it outside, but it sure looked great! We have new champions in basketball and hockey, so congrats to the Lakers and Penguins on their Championships! Now, the housecleaning is out of the way… It’s time to get to the meat… Where’s the beef? HA!

OK… Well, the Russian Finance Minister, Kudrin, threw a cat among the pigeons yesterday, when he stated that Russia has confidence in the U.S. currency. The markets have reacted violently to this statement, sending the dollar much higher, and the currencies led by the euro, much lower. An overreaction? I think so! But… These are the types of things you watch happen, and

Whipsawed Wednesday!

Contrarian Profits (June 11th, 2009) Writes:

Fed’s Beige Book disappoints…Dollar rebounds on the day…Currencies come back on the night…RBNZ leaves rates unchanged…And Now… Today’s Pfennig!

Good day… And a Thunderin’ Thursday to you! It’s a Thunderin’ and lightenin’ here in St. Louis. It all began last night, went through the night, and still hangin’ round this mornin’! Yes, I’m into dropping “g’s” today! HA!

Well… We had “Turn Around Tuesday”, and that was fallowed by “Whipsawed Wednesday”! The euphoria of the dollar bears, turned quickly yesterday, with the dollar bouncing back… I’ll tell you this dollar has more lives than a cat! But that’s OK… I certainly don’t want to see a dollar collapse, as some have called for… I just want to see it at a “fair” level, given the fundamentals of exploding deficit spending… That seems fair, eh? Trends… Weak dollar, strong dollar, alternating throughout time… Well, at least since Nixon closed the Gold window in

Waxman-Markey Whacks Industry

Chris Mayer (June 4th, 2009) Writes:

The so-called Waxman-Markey bill snaking its way through the greasy halls of Congress looks likes the most expensive thing to hit the economy since the financial crisis began. Even the normally mild-mannered Wall Street Journal called it “one of the most ambitious efforts to re-engineer American social and economic behavior in decades, presenting risks and opportunities for a wide array of businesses from Silicon Valley to the coal fields of the Appalachians.”

First off, the stated objective of cutting carbon emissions by 83% by 2050 will go down in history as outrageous – akin to when Who drummer Keith Moon drove his Lincoln Continental into the pool at the Holiday Inn. I think members of Congress must be smoking the same thing Moon was.

To show you how patently ridiculous such a goal is, I turn to Questar’s CEO – a man with the unfortunate name of Keith Rattie. Questar (NYSE:STR)

How to Find Great Stocks During a Boom or Doom Period

Contrarian Profits (June 4th, 2009) Writes:

This weekend, I’ll be speaking at the Mt. Vernon Research/Investor’s Daily Edge “Boom & Doom” conference in South Florida. During my presentations, I’ll offer the attendees my top five stocks that I believe will fare well, no matter whether we’re in a depression or expansion. Now, it wouldn’t be fair to the paying customers if I give you those top five stocks here. But what I can do is provide you with the stockpicking method to my (some say considerable) madness…

A Fat Pipeline… And An Even Fatter Dividend

Several of the stocks are in the healthcare sector - my specialized area of expertise.

Not only do I cover that sector for Mt. Vernon Research, I also believe that owning the right healthcare stocks is crucial for having a well-balanced portfolio.

While President Obama’s goal to make healthcare affordable for every American is noble, it’s difficult to execute

Class of ‘09: You’re Screwed

Bill Bonner (May 29th, 2009) Writes:

Last weekend, we journeyed to Boston to attend a college graduation. Thousands of callow scholars were on display. Each was handed his papers…and then marched out of the hockey stadium. To the tune of ‘Pomp & Circumstance,’ wearing a long, red robe, he entered the outside world solemnly…like a patsy joining a poker game.

So far, not a single major university has asked us to make the commencement address. Nor a minor college. Not even a school of cosmetology or taxidermy. But here at the Daily Reckoning headquarters in London, protected by a broad ocean and a narrow reading of the First Amendment, we will give them – and UK graduates too – advice no one asked for.

“Plastics,” was the advice given to college graduates in Mike Nichols’ ’67 film. But that was when there was still hope for America’s manufacturing sector. Even then, it was too late.

Class of ’09: You’re Screwed

Bill Bonner (May 27th, 2009) Writes:

The luck of one generation is the curse of the next.

But here on the back page, protected by a broad ocean and a narrow reading of the First Amendment, we will give them – and UK graduates too — advice no one asked for:

Game On!

Contrarian Profits (May 20th, 2009) Writes:

Risk Assets soar! …  What’s behind this stock rally? … Charts and fundamentals…  Aussie Consumer Confidence Drops…  And Now… Today’s Pfennig!

Good day… And a Wonderful Wednesday to you! A total reversal of Friday’s risk assets sell off was the soup du jour for Tuesday… This is beginning to remind me of a Wayne and Garth street hockey game… Here comes a car… Game off… Game on…

So, as I just said, Tuesday saw the currencies trade right back to the levels they enjoyed VS the dollar last Thursday, before risk assets

What If Your Favorite Professional Athlete Was A Penny Stock?

Justin Bostwick (April 25th, 2009) Writes:

So what if you could trade/invest in your favorite sports player?

Well, now you can thanks to a very cool little start-up company E-Global Sports Network, Inc.

They launched their site OneSeason.com on Oct. 1, 2008—(I’m just now finding out about it?) and it is a stock market based on buying and selling shares in professional athletes. You’re trading virtual shares of the players, obviously BUT it is for real money! There’s even a bid and ask, volume, 52 wk range, etc.

So for all you fantasy sport fans, you’re gonna love this. Currently they have a market for basketball, football, hockey (haha), and baseball. They have most of the famous players in each sport and even have past players like Micheal Jordan, Babe Ruth, etc.

So here’s the deal: The player’s market price is driven up by demand based off of popularity, performance, and hype (just like penny stocks!). One problem
