Markets continued their strong performance this week in the absence of any major market driving earnings or economic reports, as the broad based buying that characterized the previous week continued and led to gains in all of the major indices. All told, the Dow added 2.5% on the week, gaining 247 points to close at 10,270, up 17.0% on the year. The Nasdaq posted a 2.6% gain on the week, closing at 2,167 to extend its yearly gains to 37.5%, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 gained 2.3% and 1.0% respectively, bringing their yearly gains to 21.1% and 17.4%.

Equity markets carried the momentum from the previous week’s session, as the thin economic calendar and lack of significant earnings reports provided little incentive for investors to slow their buying activities.

Recently, Mylan Inc.‘s (MYL) subsidiary, Matrix Laboratories received final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Lansoprazole Delayed-release (DR) capsules in two dosage forms (15 mg and 30 mg). Mylan plans to begin shipment of the product immediately.  The drug is the generic version of Takeda Pharmaceuticals' (TKPHY.PK) proton pump inhibitor Prevacid DR Capsules. According to IMS Health (RX), the branded version had US sales of approximately $3 billion for the 12 months ending June 30.  Mylan received quite a few approvals in the recent past. In October, Mylan settled its dispute with Pfizer (PFE) related to the patent of antifungal drug Vfend (voriconazole), following which Mylan received the approval to launch the generic version of the drug. Leading DNA vaccine discovery company, Inovio Biomedical Corporation announced that their Scientific Advisory Board Chairman, Dr. David B. Weiner, highlighted advances in the company’s leading electroporation-delivered SynCon™ DNA vaccines at the AIDS Vaccine 2009 Conference in Paris.

The study, led by Dr. Weiner’s team at the University of Pennsylvania, included collaborators from Inovio and Merck. The team previously reported that DNA vaccines delivered using electroporation induced dramatic increases in T-cell and antibody-based immune responses. This collaborative study was the first to directly compare a DNA plasmid-electroporation platform with a recombinant Ad5 vector in an SIV model in non-human primates.

Dr. Weiner presented pre-clinical data showing higher levels of immune responses induced by Inovio’s DNA vaccines than to those induced by the recombinant adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5) vector. Historically, recombinant Ad5 vector has been shown to be one of the most potent viral vectors for vaccines.

However, the company reported revenues of $15.1 billion, a decline of 5.3% compared to the third quarter of 2008. While 2.8% of the decline in revenue was due to operational factors, foreign exchange movement was responsible for the remaining 2.5% decline. Sales in both domestic and international markets recorded declines of 8.1% and 2.5%, respectively. Johnson & Johnson’s diversified business model is helping the company pave its way through tough situations. Recently, Incyte Corporation (INCY) presented impressive data from a mid-stage trial for its pipeline candidate INCB18424 for psoriasis treatment. The phase IIb trial, carried out on 200 patients over a period of three months, compared three once-daily doses of the drug compared to the placebo. It was observed that patients treated with INCB18424 had a statistically significant improvement over the placebo in reducing total lesion score (erythema + scaling + thickness), which was also the primary endpoint of the trial. In addition, the trial met its secondary endpoint which was the Physician Global Assessment score and the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index score. Apart from psoriasis, Incyte is conducting trials of INCB18424 for several other indications which include myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera/essential thrombocythemia, rheumatoid arthritis, refractory prostate cancer and multiple myeloma.
