Launch of Novartis Drug Awaited – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 28th, 2009) Writes:
Novartis (NVS) is expected to launch its high blood pressure drug Valturna shortly after the recent US Food and Drug Administration approval. The drug is a single-pill combination of Diovan (valsartan), an angiotensin receptor blocker and Tekturna (aliskiren), the only approved direct renin inhibitor. We believe the approval is quite significant as Diovan, one of Novartis’ top-selling drugs with global sales of $5.7 billion in 2008, is losing patent protection in most European Union countries in 2011 and in the U.S. in 2012. Competition is likely to intensify shortly as Merck’s (MRK) Cozaar (2008 sales of $3.5 billion) will lose exclusivity in the U.S. in 2010, bringing in low-priced generics. The approval was based on a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial on 1800 patients. The trial studied the impact of valsartan (160 mg and 320 mg) and aliskiren (150 mg and 300 mg) independently as ...

Cellceutix Corp. (CTIX.OB) Announces Major Compound Acquisition

QualityStocks (August 25th, 2009) Writes:

The Massachusetts Company Cellceutix announced a major acquisition today of a new compound with high blood pressure lowering properties. The emerging, young bio-pharmaceutical company, which is in the business of developing small-molecule therapies in the areas of unmet medical needs, has acquired the right to the compound KM 732.

Preliminary testing revealed that test animals showed a significant decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to controls, with no apparent toxicity. Clinical observation of the animals indicated that blood pressure was reduced within a few minutes of the administration of the compound. The company plans to conduct proof of concept studies in large animals to evaluate the compound’s potential for development to treat hypertensive emergency. Hypertensive emergency is a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by uncontrolled blood pressure leading to damage to other organs.

When asked about the effect this new compound will have on Cellceutix, George

Obesity Update For Arena – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 4th, 2009) Writes:
Large Market Opportunity...

In our view, obesity remains the single largest opportunity for a new pharmaceutical product today. Roughly two-thirds of the U.S. population is overweight. The number is expected to grow to 75% by 2015. There is massive unmet medical need and clear pharmacoeconomic benefits to curtailing the problem.

According to the Journal of Health Affairs, obesity costs Americans $147 billion per year in total medical costs. This is 10% of all healthcare spending, and that number has doubled since 1998. It is likely to continue to surge in the years to come. Obesity is associated with an enormous number of co-morbidities, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, joint and muscle pain, as well as depression and fibromyalgia. Studies have shown that reducing body weight by as little as 5% has a meaningful impact on reducing these co-morbidities.

Healthcare Stocks Close to the Heart

Bullish Bankers (May 3rd, 2009) Writes:

With stocks having been beaten down so badly these past few quarters, investors are getting tired of losing money. However, for those of us who are not about to retire, we have to allow some room for patience in our investing strategies. Investing in a company whose stock price appreciates year-over-year is optimal, but if you’ve got some time to spare, invest in companies that you know will be more valuable 10 to 15 years down the road. With heart disease persisting as the number one killer worldwide, you should be looking to prop up your portfolio over the long run with stocks dedicated to fighting heart disease . Combined with the aging world population, these two stocks are poised to capitalize on the declining health of the eldest generation:
