AstraZeneca (AZN) received a positive opinion from the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee (EMDAC) regarding the expanded use of Crestor. AstraZeneca is seeking approval for Crestor to treat patients with normal cholesterol levels but having other risks of heart disease. The committee voted 12-4 in favor of Crestor after analyzing its benefit against possible risk in some patients. However, the committee was concerned that Crestor should not be used at random in patients with low risk.

Following the recommendation, AstraZeneca has moved one step closer to FDA approval. Although the FDA is not required to follow the committee’s opinion, it generally does so.

The panel’s recommendation was based on data presented from the JUPITER (Justification for the Use of statins in Prevention: an Intervention Trial Evaluating Rosuvastatin) study conducted with 18,000 patients. It was observed that Crestor lowered deaths, heart attacks and strokes in middle-aged people (above 50 years) with normal cholesterol level having heart disease.

Crestor is one of AstraZeneca’s key drugs logging sales of about $3.6 billion last year. The FDA approval is likely to increase the targeted patient population which in turn should boost sales. Wider application means Crestor will be able to target about 6.5 million new patients who were not taking cholesterol lowering drugs. However, the future growth trajectory of Crestor may not be that smooth since Pfizer’s (PFE) Lipitor will lose patent exclusivity in 2011. This will increase competition in the cholesterol-lowering market with the entry of generics.

In addition, AstraZeneca is tied in litigation with seven generic drug companies including Mylan Laboratories (MYL), Sandoz, the generics arm of Novartis (NVS) and Apotex, among others who have challenged Crestor’s patent. The trial is likely to begin in Feb. 2010.

Read the full analyst report on "AZN"
Read the full analyst report on "PFE"
Read the full analyst report on "MYL"
Read the full analyst report on "NVS"
Zacks Investment Research

Medtronic, Inc. (MDT) reported second-quarter of fiscal 2010 earnings per share of 77 cents, compared to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 74 cents and the year-ago earnings per share of 67 cents.

Sales
Total revenues in the reported quarter increased 8% year over year to $3.838 billion. Growth was witnessed across all the seven business segments. Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management (CRDM) revenues increased 3% year over year to $1.278 billion, driven by strong demand for the company’s implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). Spinal revenues increased 4% year over year to $862 million. Growth was fueled by higher demand for Kyphon and Biologics products.

CardioVascular revenues increased 17% year over year to $696 million. An increase in revenues can be attributed to strong sales growth across the company’s Coronary, Endovascular and Structural Heart Disease divisions.

Higher demand for Medtronic’s Endeavor Drug-eluting Stent in Japan also fueled growth in this segment. Neuromodulation revenues increased 12% year over year to $384 million, primarily due to higher sales of Activa PC, RC Deep Brain Stimulation systems and InterStim Therapy.

Diabetes, Surgical Technologies and Physio-Control revenues also increased 10%, 5%, and 25% year over year to $300 million, $224 million, and $94 million, respectively.

On a geographic basis, U.S. sales contributed 60% of total revenues and increased approximately 5% year over year. International sales increased 12% year over year.

Margins
Gross margin in the reported quarter increased 70 basis points (bps) year over year to roughly 76.0%. Research and development expenses as a percentage of sales increased 50 bps year over year to 9.6%. Selling, general and administrative expenses as a percentage of sales declined 90 bps year over year to 34.5%.

Balance Sheet & Cash Flow
Medtronic ended the quarter with cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of roughly $1.542 billion, a decline of approximately 8% in the first half of the fiscal year. The company had an outstanding long-term debt of $6.368 billion at the end of the second quarter. Cash flow from operations was $781 million for the quarter.

Outlook
Medtronic raised its earnings per share guidance for fiscal 2010. For the year, earnings per share are expected in the range of $3.17 to $3.22, compared to the prior guidance of $3.10 to $3.20. The company also reiterated its constant currency revenue growth forecast in the range of 5% to 8%.

Medtronic is one of the world’s leading medical technology companies, specializing in implantable and interventional therapy devices and products. The company’s main competitors are St. Jude Medical (STJ) and Boston Scientific Corporation (BSX).
Read the full analyst report on "MDT"
Read the full analyst report on "STJ"
Read the full analyst report on "BSX"
Zacks Investment Research

Abbott Labs (ABT) is looking to launch its XIENCE V Everolimus Eluting Coronary Stent System in China in the fourth quarter of 2009. The company recently received approval from the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) for the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD).

In our opinion, the launch of XIENCE V in China should bring in significant incremental revenues for the company’s Vascular Product division, which posted sales of $2.2 billion in 2008. China is the second-largest drug eluting stent market in the Asia-Pacific region after Japan. With the launch in China, XIENCE V will be available in every Asia-Pacific market except Japan, where the product is currently being reviewed by the regulatory authority. XIENCE V’s launch in Japan in early 2010 could potentially add another $500 million market opportunity.

CAD is the leading cause of death in China -- according to the China Chronic Heart Disease 2006 annual report, nearly 50% of all deaths annually in China are due to CAD. Moreover the occurrence of the disease has been increasing steadily every year. Each year, about 150,000 patients undergo a stent procedure for the treatment of CAD, with the number of procedures is growing by more than 20% annually.

Following the launch of XIENCE V, Abbott has become a major player in the drug-eluting stent (DES) market. XIENCE V has been taking significant domestic and international share from Boston Scientific’s (BSX) Taxus (paclitaxel-eluting system), Medtronic’s (MDT) Endeavor, and Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ) Cypher (sirolimus-eluting system) drug-eluting stents.

Data on XIENCE V compared to both Taxus and Cypher shows XIENCE V to be the best available product on the market with respect to reducing rates of target revascularization, reducing rates of stent thrombosis, and providing a reduction in risk of major cardiac events (MACE) and all-cause mortality.

Abbott is currently working on a next-generation drug coated stent called XIENCE PRIME. PRIME is already available in Europe and other countries throughout Asia-Pacific and Latin America, and is currently in a large scale clinical program called SPIRIT PRIME in the U.S. If approved, PRIME could hit the U.S. market in the first half of 2012.

By Simon van Norden

Today, we're fortunate to have Simon van Norden, Professor of Finance at HEC Montréal (École des Hautes Études Commerciales), continue as a guest contributor.

In my previous post, I wrote about some of the evidence linking serious banking crises to real estate market collapses. That evidence is far from iron clad; it is simply the observation that many banking crises in mature economies have their origins in a real estate boom and bust cycle. However, the idea is also intuitively appealing.

Remember that at the end of 2008, the Federal Reserve Board estimated that there was $12 Trillion of mortgage debt on residential properties in the US, with the Federal government and its agencies providing about 5% of the total, individuals 9% and the rest coming from the financial sector. The Case-Shiller composite index of housing prices has fallen 1/3 from its peak in 2006 and the latest the Mortgage Banker Association survey finds that 13.5% of residential mortgages in their survey are delinquent or in foreclosure.

Even if losses in the end are only 5% of mortgage debt, that's a $600 Billion drop in equity on private sector balance sheets. It's easy to see how losses of half a trillion dollars or more could push some banks into insolvency and many into illiquidity. That's the recipe for a banking crisis. Remember that the FDIC's Deposit Insurance Fund had reserves of just over $50 billion at the start of 2008 and of which approximately zero is left today. That's the recipe for a costly banking crisis.

Like heart disease, there may be many different significant risk factors for banking crises. However, the evidence to date suggests that real estate volatility is one of the most important, if not the most important. Reducing the risk of future crises (and their drain on the public treasury) requires that something be done to address this risk factor. As I'll discuss in a minute, there seem to be lots of ways to do this, but they boil down to some combination of (1) reducing the volatility of real estate prices, and (2) reducing banking sector exposure to real estate.
But first, stop and think about the kinds of proposals that are currently under discussion. There's a long list that includes things like

The creation of a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency, a National Bank Supervisor, and an Office of National Insurance, which would join with several other agencies in a Financial Services Oversight Council.

Requiring reporting of all OTC derivative transactions, as well as clearing and transparent trading of all standardized OTC derivative products.

Expanding the mandate of the Federal Reserve to explicitly include all firms that pose systemic risks to the financial system.

Requiring registration of advisors to hedge funds and other pools of capital.

A reform of executive pay in the financial sector to reduce incentives for excessive risk-taking

The provision of explicit government insurance to mortgage derivatives

A ban on "naked" short-selling

Restricting the sale of CDSs and similar instruments to those with long position in the underlying asset.

[your favorite goes here]

Now ask yourself which of these will be effective in reducing the volatility of real estate prices? Which will effectively reduce the banking sector's exposure to that volatility? With the exception of #6 on the above list, it's not obvious that any of these proposals will do either (and #6 doesn't appear to be high on the public agenda as far as I can tell.) Understand that the word "obvious" is an important caveat; for example, it's conceivable that improving clearing of OTC derivatives might reduce the exposure of the banking sector to real estate collapses by preventing contagion within the banking sector, but it's hard to know how much this will help. The same can be said for most of the items of the list; they might help or there might be other sound reasons for those reforms, but there is little that looks like it will reliably reduce volatility in the real estate market or reduce the banking sector's exposure to those fluctuations.

What I find most surprising about the financial reform debate is that so much of it has focused on reform of regulatory agencies, banking laws and trading environments while so little attention has been paid to reform of mortgage regulations and mortgage-related securities. So to stimulate the debate on such reforms, let me suggest two kinds of measures that deserve further consideration.

1.	Highly-leveraged mortgages increase the systemic risk in the financial sector and should be discouraged. This could be done in a number of ways, such as a tax on high loan-to-value mortgages, or compulsory insurance, or via regulation limiting the value of liens that can be attached to real estate, or simply by limiting mortgage-interest deductibility. Doing so should reduce the banking system's exposure to the real estate market by ensuring that borrowers have greater equity investments (or are backed by insurance.) The reduction in leverage may also reduce real estate price swings.

2.	The insurance of mortgages and mortgage-related products (including credit-default swaps on mortgage derivatives) requires tighter regulation. Such insurance is a critical buffer between downturns in the real estate market and the solvency of the banking system. While some mortgage risk is diversifiable, a substantial portion is a macroeconomic risk that is not diversifiable. This is particularly true for mortgage-backed securities, which pool risks across many individual mortgages. In the event of a national downturn in housing prices, it is not obvious that private-sector insurers will have the resources to honor their policies. At a minimum, the government needs to impose capital requirements for mortgage insurance and related financial derivatives that require a level of financial reserves commensurate with the degree of macroeconomic risk in this market. Others (such as Mehrling 2009) have argued that the government should simply provide such insurance themselves.

Yesterday, Abbott (ABT) agreed to acquire 90% of the outstanding equity of Evalve, Inc. that it has not yet accquired, for up to $410 million. The accquisition will move ahead with an upfront payment of $320 million, and a $90 million payment on the achievement of certain regulatory milestones.

Evalve is the global leader in the development of devices for minimally invasive repair of cardiac mitral valves. The company’s MitraClip system is used to clip the leaflets of the mitral valve together to reduce regurgitation.

Mitral regurgitation, a condition that prevents the mitral valve from closing completely, is the most common type of heart valve insufficiency in Europe and the United States. The condition is traditionally treated through open heart surgery, but only 20% of the 600,000 patients diagnosed in the U.S. and Europe each year go for surgery.

However, with the availability of Evalve’s MitraClip system, physicians can now offer their patients a minimally invasive alternative to open heart surgery. MitraClip is currently approved in Europe for non-surgical mitral valve repair in patients suffering from mitral regurgitation. The device is under clinical trials in the U.S.

The Evalve business should be a good addition to Abbott’s vascular products business, which posted sales of $2.2 billion in 2008. The acquisition of Evalve should not only expand Abbott’s medical devices portfolio, it should also help the company establish a presence in the non-surgical market for the treatment of structural heart disease.

Abbott maintained its previously issued guidance for 2009 and expects the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of 2009. We have a Neutral rating on Abbott. The company’s primary competitors in the vascular products market include Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Medtronics Inc. (MDT) and Boston Scientific (BSX).
Read the full analyst report on "ABT"
Read the full analyst report on "JNJ"
Read the full analyst report on "MDT"
Read the full analyst report on "BSX"
Zacks Investment Research

Volcano Corporation (VOLC) has entered into a non-exclusive, global resale agreement with Siemens Healthcare, a division of Siemens AG (SI). Per the agreement, Siemens will resell Volcano's s5i IVUS/FFR systems and accessories along with its Artis family of x-ray systems.

Volcano's s5i is a component-based system that is incorporated directly into the catheterization lab, commonly known as the cath lab, thereby allowing intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and fractional flow reserve (FFR) systems to remain always ON and ready. The company's IVUS and FFR systems are compatible with Siemens' Artis x-ray offerings.

The new agreement appears to be a win-win for both companies. Volcano's top-line will be substantially benefited by the agreement with the global giant. On the other hand, Siemens is a technology leader in the cath lab market focusing on a complete cath lab package. Siemens should benefit from the agreement as Volcano's s5i IVUS and FFR systems are a perfect match for Siemens' x-ray systems.

Volcano Corporation offers a broad suite of IVUS and functional measurement (FM) products, like the FFR systems, to enhance the diagnosis of vascular and structural heart disease, facilitates endovascular procedures, and guide optimal therapies. The company's IVUS product line can be directly integrated into virtually any modern cath lab.

Volcano's IVUS technology enables physicians to determine the stent size by visualizing vessel geometry and understanding plaque composition. The FFR technology enables them to make a physiological measurement of a lesion to evaluate the requirement for treatment. Both of these technologies are integrated into the cath lab in one system by using Volcano's s5i system.

Read the full analyst report on "VOLC"
Read the full analyst report on "SI"
Zacks Investment Research

Yesterday, Abbott Laboratories (ABT) received approval from Health Canada for its XIENCE V Everolimus Eluting Coronary Stent System for the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). The product will be launched in Canada immediately.

Coronary artery disease is a common type of heart disease in which plaque buildup narrows the arteries and reduces blood flow to the heart. This can lead to chest pain or a heart attack.

XIENCE V is a drug coated stent that is used to treat CAD by propping open a narrowed or blocked artery and releasing the drug, everolimus, in a controlled manner over time so as to help prevent the artery from getting blocked again.

XIENCE V is currently available in the United States, Europe and other international markets. Shortly after its 2008 approval in the U.S., XIENCE V became the market-leading drug-eluting stent (DES) in the U.S. Clinical trial data has been very encouraging, which has resulted in a strong launch in the U.S. as well as overseas.

XIENCE V demonstrated superiority over Boston Scientific’s (BSX) TAXUS paclitaxel-eluting coronary stent system in the primary endpoints of two randomized, pivotal phase III studies.

The product has been taking significant share from its competitors, Boston Scientific’s Taxus and Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ) Cypher (sirolimus-eluting system). Going forward, XIENCE V’s launch in Japan in early 2010 could potentially add another $500 million market opportunity.

Abbott is now a major player in the drug-eluting stent (DES) market with XIENCE V in its portfolio. The company is currently working on a next-generation drug coated stent called XIENCE PRIME. PRIME is on the market in Europe, and in a large-scale clinical program called SPIRIT PRIME in the U.S. If approved, PRIME could hit the U.S. market in the first half of 2012.

Abbott’s Vascular Products segment should continue posting robust growth mainly due to the strong performance of XIENCE V.

Read the full analyst report on "ABT"
Read the full analyst report on "BSX"
Read the full analyst report on "JNJ"
Zacks Investment Research

Medtronic, Inc. (MDT) reported results for the first quarter of fiscal 2010. Earnings per share were 79 cents, higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 78 cents and the year-ago earnings per share of 72 cents.

Sales

Net sales in the quarter were $3.933 billion, increasing 6% year over year. Excluding the impact of a strong U.S. dollar, net sales increased 10% year over year. Growth was witnessed across all seven operating segments – both on a reported and constant-currency basis.

Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management (CRDM) revenues increased approximately 3% year over year to $1.337 billion. Growth was fueled by strong demand for pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs) that increased roughly 2% and 1% year over year, respectively.

We believe the company will continue to maintain its strong position in the cardiac market against its closest rivals Boston Scientific Corporation (BSX) and St. Jude Medical (STJ).

Spinal revenues increased 7% year over year to $915 million. Growth was led by strong contribution by the company’s core spinal product, Kyphon.

CardioVascular revenues increased 9% year over year to $689 million. The increase in revenues can be primarily attributed to higher global demand for the Endovascular and Structural Heart Disease products. Higher coronary revenues aided by the launch of the Endeavor Drug-eluting Stent in Japan also contributed to the increase.

Neuromodulation revenues increased 7% year over year to $373 million. Growth was led by a higher demand for the InterStim Therapy, Activa Deep Brain Stimulation Therapy and the launch of Activa PC and RC in the U.S. and Europe.

Diabetes revenues increased 10% year over year to $295 million. Surgical Technologies revenues increased 12% year over year to $227 million. Physio-Control revenues increased 3% year over year to $97 million.

Margins

Gross margin declined 150 basis points year over year to 75.4%. The decline was due to higher cost of goods sold that increased roughly 13% year over year. Research and development (R&D) expenses as a percentage of sales increased 70 basis points year over year to 9.4%. Selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses as a percentage of sales decreased 80 basis points year over year to 34.8%.

Medtronic incurred $444 million of pre-tax litigation charges in connection with the resolution of its outstanding intellectual property litigation with Abbott Laboratories (ABT) in the reported quarter. This has primarily lowered the company’s operating margin by 1,160 basis points year over year to approximately 18.4%.

Balance Sheet & Cash Flow

Medtronic’s cash balance declined $132 million sequentially to $1,544 million in the quarter. The company’s working capital was $4,152 million, approximately 106% of total revenues for the quarter. Cash flow from operations was $625 million at the end of the reported quarter.

Medtronic is one of the world’s leading medical technology companies, specializing in implantable and interventional therapy devices and products. The company is a market leader in cardiology and spine devices that benefit from scale, resources, and incremental sales synergies within the medical devices industry.
Read the full analyst report on "MDT"
Read the full analyst report on "BSX"
Read the full analyst report on "STJ"
Read the full analyst report on "ABT"
Zacks Investment Research

Large Market Opportunity...

In our view, obesity remains the single largest opportunity for a new pharmaceutical product today. Roughly two-thirds of the U.S. population is overweight. The number is expected to grow to 75% by 2015. There is massive unmet medical need and clear pharmacoeconomic benefits to curtailing the problem.

According to the Journal of Health Affairs, obesity costs Americans $147 billion per year in total medical costs. This is 10% of all healthcare spending, and that number has doubled since 1998. It is likely to continue to surge in the years to come. Obesity is associated with an enormous number of co-morbidities, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, joint and muscle pain, as well as depression and fibromyalgia. Studies have shown that reducing body weight by as little as 5% has a meaningful impact on reducing these co-morbidities.

New Products Are Coming...

Several biotechnology companies are working on the next wave of obesity candidates. These include Arena's (ARNA) Lorcaserin, Vivus' (VVUS) Qnexa, Orexigen's (OREX) Contrave and Amylin's (AMLN) pramlintide.

Contrave has completed phase III trials and Orexigen's management is expected to file for approval in early 2010. Qnexa is currently in two phase III programs with an NDA expected around the middle of 2010. Amylin's pramlintide and metreleptin is currently in phase IIb. That gives Arena, with an NDA planned before the end of the year, the first-mover advantage.

Safety Is Key Determinant...

Analysis for Contrave looks similar to lorcaserin in terms of efficacy. Both products offered around 17 - 18 lbs of weight loss after one year of treatment. Vivus' Qnexa, which is a combination of phentermine and topiramate, offered up around 20 lbs of weigh loss after only six months.

We are waiting for the Qnexa 1-year data, but it looks like Qnexa is the most efficacious drug. However, it is important to note that there is clearly more to a weight loss drug than just pure efficacy. If efficacy was the only hurdle, Wyeth's (WYE) Phen-Fen would still be on the market.

Physicians' surveys have clearly showed that safety is the paramount concern. And, with the significant prescriber interest in reducing co-morbidities, tolerability and abuse potential are also high on the list of what makes an overall effective drug for obese patients. Physicians will want to prescribe a drug that they feel has excellent safety and tolerability, with a very good chance in helping the patient lose at least 5% body weight. We are starting to feel more and more like that drug is lorcaserin.

What's Next For Arena?...

The biggest near-term catalyst for Arena is the release of the phase III BLOSSOM data in September 2009. From this program, we will look to confirm the efficacy and safety demonstrated in BLOOM, and finalize the NDA package. Data from the ongoing BLOOM-DM program will be filed as a supplement to the NDA in 2010.

There are several scenarios that could play out in 2010. We expect Arena to file for approval in December 2009, putting the FDA action date in October 2010. Depending on the time of the BLOOM-DM sNDA, the FDA will include the diabetes language in the label in October, approve the drug in October and review the -DM data separately, or delay approval in October while it reviews the full application.

The FDA has not met many PDUFA action dates for NCEs over the past few quarters. Plus, the agency has been very tough on new "neuro-physical" drugs for things like obesity, neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia in the past. So we believe the third scenario is the most likely, meaning a final lorcaserin approval will come in early 2011.

Data from BLOSSOM will most likely provide a small pop to the shares. However, the best chance for a meaningful run in the stock is through the signing of a commercialization partnership. We think this will take place around the middle of 2010 after all three firms -- Arena, Orexigen, and Vivus -- have filed for approval of their respective drugs and potential partners can evenly weight the aspects of each application.

We have said in the past, the best overall drug will secure the best partnership. For the meantime, we are maintaining our Neutral rating on Arena, but we believe there is clearly money to be made on obesity stocks over the next few quarters.

Read the full analyst report on "ARNA"
Read the full analyst report on "VVUS"
Read the full analyst report on "OREX"
Read the full analyst report on "AMLN"
Zacks Investment Research

An annual survey released recently found that adult obesity rates in the U.S. exceed 25% in 31 states, up from 28 states last year and 19 the year before.

Obesity, coupled with the risk of heart disease and diabetes, proves to be the most expensive burden on a nation's healthcare. High cholesterol levels, which can damage the heart, has gained prominence as a serious problem. The most commonly prescribed medicines to control cholesterol are called statins.

Statins such as Pfizer's (PFE) Lipitor and AstraZeneca's (AZN) Crestor have become the best-selling drugs in the US, accounting for $17.5 billion in sales in 2008. Though almost all the drugs (except Crestor) have witnessed declining sales, it is mainly because of generic competition in the major markets of US and Europe.

Lipitor, the highest-selling drug in this category, will lose its patent in March 2010 (outside US and 2011 for US); Ranbaxy will enter the U.S. market on November 30, 2011. Lipitor is already facing tough competition from generic simvastatin (Zocor), as well as superior branded products, such as Crestor.

Another product, Trilipix (fenofibric acid [fibrate] from Abbott Labs (ABT)) was approved by the FDA in December 2008 to lower cholesterol levels. In some particular cases, a combination of fibrate along with statin is used as a treatment for controlling cholesterol.

We believe that with a more stressful lifestyle and food habits, the risk of heart disease is likely to increase further. Though, individually, many companies are losing market share, patent expiry will bring in more players, thus intensifying competition in a market where superior and cost effective products survive.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates the number of obese adults worldwide to grow from 400 million now to 700 million by 2015. The current recession could deepen the problem as rising prices of fruits, vegetables and other healthier foods, along with lower income, would force people to switch to less healthier options. In this scenario, controlling cholesterol is the strongest weapon towards healthy life.

Read the full analyst report on "PFE"
Read the full analyst report on "AZN"
Read the full analyst report on "ABT"
Zacks Investment Research

Oncology market is witnessing considerable growth and attracting large investments from many big pharmaceutical companies to increase their presence. Pfizer (PFE) aims big in the oncology market, which is mainly dominated by Roche and expects its global medicine sale for cancer to increase ten-fold by 2018.

The company plans to become the third largest player (from current seventh) in cancer medicine, which contributed about $2.5 billion of sales in 2008. At present, many of its products under clinical trial are for cancer treatment and six more will be added from the acquisition of Wyeth.

A number of factors such as high unmet need, favorable demographics, increased life expectancy and aging population are responsible for the renewed interest in this area. The anti-cancer drug market value is expected to grow to $85 billion in 2013 from $67 billion in 2008. Leading products for cancer therapy (fifth-largest therapeutic class globally) include MabThera/Rituxan, Herceptin and Avastin (of Roche).

Pfizer intends to exit the areas of heart disease, obesity and bone health in order to commit more resources to the treatment of oncology, pain, inflammation, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia. These are the areas that the company believes where it will be able to take leading position. Wyeth also has some complementary products and research.

Pfizer has established a separate business unit focused specifically on oncology as management expects this area to offer significant opportunities for future growth. The Oncology Business Unit has been established to expedite the launches of novel oncology agents and focus research efforts on cancers common in Asia. While the business unit will have a global focus, they will have a significant interest in emerging markets as Pfizer believes this to be a region that has substantial unmet needs.

We have a Hold recommendation on the stock, based on our reservations whether Wyeth will provide the opportunity to grow revenue in the long-term, the significant reduction in the company’s net cash balance and the substantially lower-than-expected financial guidance for 2009.

Read the full analyst report on "PFE"
Zacks Investment Research

One bill after the other is being passed for the prevention of tobacco and its ill effects on consumers. Recently, ‘The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act’ was signed by President Obama, primarily to prevent the teenagers from becoming addicted to tobacco.

The new act gives full authority to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate the amount of nicotine in tobacco products, along with imposing a ban on candy flavored and other flavored cigarettes, primarily as the flavored cigarettes are considered to be more appealing to first-time smokers. The Act also requires that tobacco companies should block labels such as ‘low tar’ and ‘light’ and cover the cigarette cartons with large graphic warnings against smoking.

The signing of the new bill marks an important history in the regulation of tobacco, as approximately 20% of Americans smoke and about 440,000 people in the U.S. die due harmful diseases like cancer, heart disease, emphysema and other ailments.

Furthermore, tobacco-related heath care costs exceed approximately $100 billion annually. Companies like Altria Group (MO), Reynolds American (RAI) and Phillip Morris (PM) are all in support of the new bill allowing the FDA to impose strict regulations on tobacco.

However, MO and PM have stated some First Amendment reservations about certain parts of the act. Further, despite severe restrictions on smoking across the U.S. there are more than 40 million smokers making tobacco still a viable industry. RAI and MO state that they would continue to design better products, and under the federal regulation would continue to make its products available, while PM believes that the competition would get intense as the demand for smoke-free products will increase.

We currently rate Holds on RAI, MO and PM, as the stocks maintain a low P/E due to tobacco-related litigation issues and court case losses.
Read the full analyst report on "MO"
Read the full analyst report on "RAI"
Read the full analyst report on "PM"
Zacks Investment Research

One Down, One To Go For United Therapeutics

On May 25, 2009, the U.S. FDA approved United Therapeutics (UTHR) Adcirca (tadalafil, sold by Eli Lilly [LLY] as Cialis for erectile dysfunction) for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), with a recommended dose of 40 mg. Adcirca is indicated to improve exercise ability in WHO Group I PAH patients, which encompasses patients with multiple forms of PAH including etiologies such as idiopathic and familial PAH as well as PAH associated with scleroderma and congenital heart disease.

Our financial model assumes that United Therapeutics can start recording sales of tadalafil for PAH in August 2009. We assume only modest contribution in 2009, so a stronger-than-expected launch would lead to upside to our financial model.

On April 26, 2009, United Therapeutics was notified by the U.S. FDA that its pending review of the inhaled version of treprostinil (proposed name Tyvaso) will extend beyond the PDUFA date of April 30, 2009. The new date is now July 30, 2009. The delay relates to questions received from the FDA concerning human factor testing and the instructions for use (IFU) of the handheld OptiNeb portable Nebulizer that delivers Tyvaso into the lungs.

The OptiNeb is not an overly complex device, but apparently the FDA wants to make sure the IFU is clear and easily understandable as to not allow any potential use-related hazards. Management has conducted a small clinical trial involving 20 to 30 subjects testing the ability of each patient to properly use the device given the current IFU. This data has been submitted to the FDA.

Phase III data from the TRIUMPH program was highly statistically significant (p<0.0002), especially at the lowest quartile of patients, but we still think the FDA could raise questions around why the Revatio population failed to show a meaningful improvement, or why 3 patients in the inhaled treprostinil arm had to discontinue due to disease progression vs. none in the control. Approval is a 50/50 proposition, in our view.

Despite the potential risk that the FDA may delay approval of Tyvaso, fundamentals at United Therapeutics are solid. The company should be able to post pro-forma earnings growth at the top of the industry over the next few years, even without Tyvaso. Throw in Tyvaso, and eventually positive development on the oral treprostinil molecule, and the earnings power is un-rivaled. Our current rating is Hold, but we would be buyers of the stock on a meaningful pullback.

Extensive research is being done to utilize stem cells for a href="http://stockerblog.blogspot.com/2008/05/gene-therapy-stocks.html" target-"_blank"gene therapy/a and the treatment of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and many other medical conditions. br /br /A source of stem cells is a href="http://cordbloodstocks.com/" target-"_blank"cord blood/a, the blood from an umbilical cord. The saving and storing of cord blood has become a fast growing business. For example, Richard Branson, founder and head of Virgin Records and Virgin Atlantic Airways, set up a cord blood bank. Even a href="http://stockerblog.blogspot.com/2007/10/stem-cell-bonds-issued-by-california.html" target-"_blank"Stem Cell Bonds/a were issued by the state of California last year. Also, the National Institute of Health has discovered that strong a href="http://stemcellsstocks.com/" target-"_blank"stem cells/a can be found in baby teeth. br /br /Here are several stocks, which are pure plays or semi-pure plays in the stem cell business. br /br /Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN) is a Connecticut based company with a $2.9 billion market cap that is involved in the development of biologic therapeutic products for the treatment of hematologic and cardiovascular disorders, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. It is a low cap stock and should be considered very speculative.br /br /Celera Group (CRA) is a company that was founded in 1937. It is involved in the research of new diagnostic markers, using proprietary genomics and proteomics discovery procedures and diagnostic products. Some of their products are used for the detection of HIV, hepatitis C, and cystic fibrosis. They are in collaboration with Abbott Laboratories (ABT), Genentech (DNA), and General Electric (GE). The stock has generated negative earnings.br /br /Cellgene (CELG) is a $24 billion market cap company involved in the discovery and production, of therapies designed to treat cancer and immune-inflammatory-related diseases. One of their main products is Thalomid, which is used for the treatment of erythema nodosum leprosum, a complication of leprosy. They also received patent on placental stem cell recovery. The stock has recently generated negative earnings.br /br /Cytori Therapeutics, Inc. (CYTX) is a $125 million market cap company that makes and markets regenerative medicine medical technologies. They have recently generated negative earnings. This is a low cap stock and should be considered very speculative. br /br /Dendreon Corporation (DNDN) This $358 million market cap company is involved in the discovery, development, and sales of active immunotherapies, monoclonal antibodies, and small molecule product candidates to treat cancer. They also manufacture the DACSÒSC stem cell enrichment device. The stock has had negative earnings.br /br /Geron (GERN) is a Menlo Park, California based $600 million market cap company which develops cell-based therapies derived from human embryonic stem cells used for the treatment of various diseases and medical conditions such as spinal cord damage, heart failure, and diabetes.
