Markets took pause from their four week run this week, as some less than encouraging economic reports coupled with profit taking led to slight declines in all of the major indices. All told, the Dow ended the week down 0.5%, surrendering 48 points to close at 9321, bringing its YTD gains to 6.2%. The Nasdaq was off 0.7%, closing at 1985, up a healthy 25.9% on the year, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 were down 0.6% and 1.5% respectively, paring their yearly gains to 11.2% and 12.9%.

After the close of market yesterday, Amgen (AMGN) announced that the longevity of colon cancer patients improved significantly when treated with a combination of its cancer drug Vectibix and Folfox -- a standard chemotherapy drug regimen rather than with chemotherapy alone. The company intends to present detailed results of the trial later this year. The results are based on a late-stage trial (n=1183) and are applicable to patients with the normal version of a gene known as KRAS. 90% of the patients were identified with KRAS mutations that are associated with more aggressive cancers and lower survival rates. Skin toxicity coupled with low magnesium blood levels and diarrhea were the side-effects of the study which tests Vectibix as a primary (first-line) treatment for the disease. Bristol-Myers Ups Bid to $62 for ImClone Last night, Bristol-Myers (BMY) announced plans to increase its bid for the remaining 83% of ImClone Systems (IMCL) it does not already own to $62 per share and plans to take the offer directly to shareholders in the form of a tender offer. BSD Medical Corp. (Nasdaq: BSDM) is part of the global fight against cancer. The company develops systems for cancer therapies requiring precision-focused heat through microwave technologies. Today the company announced its European distributor was awarded a contract from Azienda Ospedaliera Institui Ospitalieri Di Verona (the Institute) to replace its existing hyperthermia system with BSD’s BSD-2000/3D system.

The BSD-2000/3D deep regional hyperthermia system is scheduled for delivery in August 2008, and will replace the Institute’s current system, which has been used since 1996. The BSD-2000/3D will be the first of its kind in Italy, and the 15th utilized in Europe.
