Did You Know?

Kevin Matras (October 23rd, 2009) Writes:
We've all heard the old adage: knowledge is power.

It's a great saying because it's true.

And that saying couldn't be truer than when it comes to investing.

Take a look at your last big loser. After analyzing what went wrong, you probably discovered some piece of information that – 'had you known that, you never would have gotten into it in the first place'.

I'm not talking about things that are unknowable, like inside information or surprise announcements that can catch even the most professional of professionals off guard.

I'm talking about things that you could have known about or SHOULD have known about before you got in.

Did You Know?...

Did you know that roughly half of a stock's price movement can be attributed to the group that it's in? Did you also know that often times a mediocre stock in a top performing group will outperform ...

Boom, Bust and Rebuild: Bank of America and the Kenneth Lewis Legacy

Contrarian Profits (October 2nd, 2009) Writes:

Kenneth D. Lewis There are many ways to view Kenneth Lewis’ eight-year reign as Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) chief executive, but two seem to hold the most landscape.

On one hand, the $130 billion he spent on acquisitions – FleetBoston Financial Corp., MBNA Corp., LaSalle Bank Corp., Countrywide Financial Corp., Charles Schwab Corp.’s (Nasdaq: SCHW) U.S. Trust private banking unit and Merrill Lynch – that more than tripled the size of Bank of America, making it the largest U.S. lender both by assets and deposits.

On the other, his open-wallet policy and the example it set forth almost perfectly encapsulates the boom, bust and nascent rebound of the U.S. housing and banking crisis – which later became the financial plague that devastated markets all over the world.

In the second half of 2007, the extent of the U.S. housing crisis began to crystallize when Countrywide’s freewheeling

Cautious SARB feeling its way forward

Prieur du Plessis (October 1st, 2009) Writes:

By Cees Bruggemans, Chief Economist FNB

Are we really fighting inflation?

There are times when understanding inflation is easy. Big demands are placed on all resources, shortages arise, profit margins can be inflated, cost and price increases easily passed on, in a spiraling kind of way.

Expectations of accelerating price increases (faster inflation) become embedded and feed the inflation spiral.

Handling that is easy. You hit it on the head. Less easy to handle is the output sacrifice incurred along the way as demand falls, resource slack builds up, discipline is restored to expectations and price acceleration is with difficulty transformed into price deceleration, even price freezing or declines.

Output sacrifice implies pain. Reduced real wages. Unemployment. Hardship. Always difficult to accommodate, especially in a democracy where leadership incompetence is quickly criticized (”You owe me full employment, a rising living standard and everything I haven’t got yet. Deliver or

Asian Economies to ‘Lead the Recovery,’ Says ADB

Contrarian Profits (September 23rd, 2009) Writes:

Asian economies are recovering faster than previously thought and will lead the charge out of the worst global downturn since the 1930s, according to new forecasts by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) – a Manila-based institution that promotes economic and social progress in the Asia-Pacific region.

After slashing its forecast for the region in March, the ADB reversed course in its updated Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2009. The bank said developing economies in Asia would grow by 3.9% this year, up from its previous forecast of 3.4%.

“Despite worsening conditions in the global economic environment, developing Asia is poised to lead the recovery from the worldwide slowdown,” said ADB Chief Economist Jong-Wha Lee.

However, the growth will not be evenly distributed. Economic growth in East Asia will be driven largely by China’s dynamic economy. But economic growth in Southeast Asia will be sluggish, because the recoveries of Vietnam and

China’s Environment and Coal

QualityStocks (September 10th, 2009) Writes:

China has an environmental problem which the government has been aware of for years. Polluters have been able to dump massive amounts of toxic wastes into China’s air and water for many years with no repercussions because the mandate from Beijing was for economic growth at all costs.

But that is all changing. China now has an environmental movement among its people which is in its infancy, but growing quickly. The interesting facet of China’s nascent environmental movement is that the central government in Beijing is actually listening to the environmentalists, at least to a certain extent. They are cracking down on some of the worst polluters and shutting them down.

Beginning in late 2008, Beijing began a crackdown on numerous illegal, dangerous coal mines which also happened to be the biggest polluting mines. Many of these operations have been shut down permanently.

Many investors may think to themselves – so what?

Forecast the SP 500 using Market Cycles Oscillators

Steve Warshaw (August 31st, 2009) Writes:

< !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> "If You Knew When and Where Market Tops & Bottoms Were Going To Occur, You Could Make a Fortune!"

Cycles are evident in all aspects of life. From the life cycle of a bug lasting days, to the cycle of planets lasting billions of years. The stock market ebs and flows in cycles, and those who take the time studying them avoid being caught off guard when "the bubble bursts."

Prieur’s readings (August 20, 2009)

Prieur du Plessis (August 20th, 2009) Writes:

This post provides links to a number of interesting articles I have read over the past few days that you may also enjoy.

• Randall Forsyth (Barron’s): No bull! Rally hits the wall, August 19, 2009. Coming off a “sugar high,” stocks have stalled below the early August highs. Pause or correction?

• Brian Wesbury and Robert Stein (Forbes): This recovery is no sugar high, August 18, 2009. The way we see it, those who were pessimistic about stocks and the economy early this year are going through the classic five stages of grief. First, they denied a recovery was going to happen anytime soon. Then they lashed out with anger at those who spotted signs of the recovery. Now, they are bargaining, admitting the existence of the recovery that they did not see coming, but belittling it. Next, as things keep
