Our best picks at this point include Myriad Genetics (MYGN), Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ONXX) and AMAG Pharmaceuticals Inc. (AMAG), Dendreon (DNDN) and 3SBio Inc. (SSRX). The Dow Falls To Its November Lows – Analyst Blog

Charles Rotblut (February 19th, 2009) Writes:

After the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) tested the Nov 21 intraday low of 7,449, we ended the day with a small bounce.

This was not surprising. November's intraday low should serve as a support level. Furthermore, the blue-chip average is oversold. These 2 factors caused some brave traders to buy. Hopefully, we'll see some follow-through buying tomorrow.

Of course, this is all based on technical analysis. And technical analysis only works until it doesn't.

The fundamentals remain horrible. Earnings estimates continue to be cut, the recession is worsening and the credit crisis is continuing. Yes, Washington is trying to help, but both the stimulus package and the new housing program could have been better.

Despite all of this gloom, I added a stock today to the Focus List. Why? Because there are still companies that are doing just find despite the economic backdrop.

Biotechnology Industry – Zacks Analyst Interviews

Zacks Market Commentaries (December 4th, 2008) Writes:
Historically, the biotech industry was less impacted by market conditions due to its unique characteristics. In large part, biotech stocks have been event-driven. Specifically, investors are more focused on clinical development and pipeline advancement for individual biotech companies.

However, current market conditions have exerted a negative impact on the valuation of individual companies in the biotech industry. We believe the different impact current market conditions have exerted is mainly due to the credit crunch.

Most biotech companies are in early or middle development stages, and continuing financing is an integral part of their operations in order to advance their drug pipelines. Under current market conditions, liquidity has dried up for some companies, and raising capital has been extremely difficult in the past few months. Some companies are forced to enter into survival mode to reserve cash by restructuring. Some even have to suspend operations or file for bankruptcy.

Sciele a Buy Since January – Zacks Tale of the Tape

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 2nd, 2008) Writes:

Those of who took note of Zacks senior biotech analyst Jason Napodano, CFA's upgrade to a Buy recommendation for Sciele Pharmaceuticals (SCRX) early this year will be happy to know the company has just been sold to Shionogi & Co., a Japanese firm, for $1.4 billion in cash. Shares of SCRX were up about 60% as of today's opening.  Price appreciation has skyrocketed to around $30.58 per share.

It helps that this comes of a day with positive momentum for the stock market as the price of oil has again come down.  Nevertheless, congratulations to all who took Jason's advice, when shares were trading at under $19 per share he said, "We believe the current share price represents an attractive entry point for long-term investors and we rate the stock a Buy."

We await an updated report on SCRX in the days to come.  But the buyout also reaffirms the industry

Biotech Outlook: M&A to Continue – Zacks Analyst Interviews

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 1st, 2008) Writes:
Checking on the biotechnology sector, we spoke with Zacks senior analyst Grant Zeng, CFA about recent developments among these companies. We discussed M&A [mergers and acquisitions] activity as well as top Buy recommendations.

How has earnings season gone this quarter? Any major surprises?

As you know, most of the companies covered by me are small-cap biotech companies which usually report their quarterly earnings quite late. I just finished updating all my companies last week and I have both positive and negative surprises.

On the positive side, Celgene’s (CELG) Revlimid beat our estimate by $15.8 million; Vidaza sales beat our estimate by $7.2 million. Total product sales beat our estimate by $16.5 million with quarterly sales of $542 million. Celgene’s adjusted EPS also beat our estimate by 6 cents. We have a Hold rating on Celgene due to valuation concerns.

For BioMarin (BMRN), sales for all three
