GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) recently received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its unadjuvanted influenza A (H1N1) pandemic vaccine.  The FDA approved the supplemental biologics license application (sBLA), which was filed as a strain change supplement to Glaxo’s FluLaval seasonal flu vaccine. This means that Glaxo can now market its swine flu vaccine for use in adults to prevent influenza.     The company has already received an order for 7.6 million doses of its swine flu vaccine from the United States Department of Health and Human Services. This order is a part of the US Government’s intention to secure about 250 million doses to help fight the swine flu pandemic.   The current outbreak of swine flu pandemic can prove to be a big opportunity for vaccine manufacturers. GlaxoSmithKline, plc (GSK) reported third quarter income of 92 cents per American Depository Share (ADS), 3 cents below the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company reported earnings of 94 cents in the year-ago period. Third quarter 2009 revenue increased 3%, with growth being driven by strong performances in emerging markets (up 25%), Japan (up 19%) and Consumer Healthcare (up 8%). We were pleased to see growth in Consumer Healthcare revenue despite the global slowdown. Meanwhile, US sales continued to be impacted by generic competition with revenue declining 12%. Sales of products like Imigran (down 74%), Lamictal (down 21%) and Requip (down 30%) and Wellbutrin XL (down 81%) kept declining. Pharmaceutical product revenue increased 2% with sales being driven by Advair/Seretide (up 5%) and Relenza. Relenza benefited from continued orders from several governments for stockpiling. Cornerstone Therapeutics Inc. (CRTX) reported third-quarter earnings per share of 7 cents, compared to a profit of 49 cents in the year-ago quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was pegged at 1 cent.   Net revenues for the quarter were up 12.1% to $23.1 million as against $20.6 million in the year-ago quarter. Revenues were boosted by the acquisition of a few products during the quarter. Sales for two of the company’s products fell due to increased competition. On Monday morning, the Food and Drug Administration panel approved Arzerra, a leukemia treatment that will be marketed and commercialized by GlaxoSmithKline Plc (ADR) (NYSE:GSK). As per the announcement made by the GSK executives, Arzerra is for those patients who have failed to respond to other therapies that cure leukemia. This new drug marketed by GSK was originally developed by GlaxoSmithKline and Genmab A/S, a Danish company. Baxter International Inc. (BAX) announced that it sees multiyear opportunity in H1N1 vaccines, commonly known as Swine Flu vaccines. The company expects to recognize $30 million to $40 million in revenues from swine flu vaccines in the fourth quarter. Baxter has not speculated on H1N1 vaccine sales beyond the fourth quarter. However, increasing demand has raised hopes for a multiyear opportunity.
