Shares of Gildan Activewear Inc. (GIL) have surged approximately 30% despite a tough second quarter in which earnings and sales dropped sharply year over year.

The apparel maker announced sales of $244.8 million, which fell 17% from last year due to sluggish end-use demand and the timing of wholesale distributor replenishment.

However, the sales result did surpass Wall Street expectations.

Meanwhile, Gildan's adjusted earnings of 6 cents per share missed the reduced consensus by 3 cents.

The company also reduced its fiscal 2009 capital expenditure target to between $60 million and $65 million, compared to earlier forecast of $80 million.

Six out of 13 covering analysts lowered full-year expectations over the past month, sending the consensus down by 10 cents to 82 cents per share.
