Hologic Inc. (HOLX) soared nearly 11% on Friday after the company said the Food and Drug Administration approved two of its molecular tests for the detection of human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer.
Cervista HPV HR is designed to detect 14 high-risk types of HPV. Also, Cervista HPV 16/18 became the first test to be approved for genotyping of HPV types 16 and 18, which are associated with about 70% of all cervical cancers in the U.S.

Operating loss for the third quarter 2008 was $11.3 million, compared to $22.2 million for the third quarter 2007. Net loss for the quarter ending September 30, 2008 was $17.9 million, compared to $24.2 million for the third quarter 2007.
