Agilent Partners With LIFE – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 28th, 2009) Writes:
Agilent Technologies (A) has entered into a marketing partnership with Applied Biosystems, a division of Life Technologies Corporation (LIFE). The subject matter of the agreement is Agilent’s SureSelect system, a research tool to be used for re-sequencing specific regions of interest in the genome. The product has been optimized for the SOLiDU system, a next-generation advanced genomic analysis-sequencing platform. Life Technologies Corporation supplies genotyping tools that facilitate academic and clinical research, drug discovery and development, pathogen detection and forensic DNA analysis. The agreement is a positive for Agilent’s Bio Analytic Measurement (BAM) segment, given Life’s market position and experience. We believe it indicates that the recession-driven weakness could be coming to an end and expect the announcement of other marketing initiatives in the next few months. The BAM segment generated $496 million in revenue in the last quarter, which was flattish in comparison ...

Hologic Gains on FDA Approval – Zacks Tale of the Tape

Zacks Market Commentaries (March 16th, 2009) Writes:

Hologic Inc. (HOLX) soared nearly 11% on Friday after the company said the Food and Drug Administration approved two of its molecular tests for the detection of human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical cancer.

Cervista HPV HR is designed to detect 14 high-risk types of HPV. Also, Cervista HPV 16/18 became the first test to be approved for genotyping of HPV types 16 and 18, which are associated with about 70% of all cervical cancers in the U.S.

Hologic acquired the Cervista tests when it bought Third Wave Technologies last year. The approval of the two tests is expected to boost Hologic's future earnings significantly. Last month, the company had reduced its full-year guidance to $1.10 to $1.15 per share as it did not expect the Cervista tests to be approved so soon.
