Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ALNY) reported a third-quarter loss of 22 cents per share, below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 24 cents but wider than the year-ago loss of 7 cents. The higher loss in the quarter is attributable to higher stock based compensation and legal expenses.

Revenues for the quarter came in at $24.2 million as against $25.7 million in the year-ago quarter, down 5.8%. Research and development costs increased 5% to $23.2 million primarily because of increased costs for clinical and pre-clinical programs coupled with increased R&D headcount to support Alnylam’s alliances and development programs.    General and administrative expenses increased 56% to $10.7 million. Quarterly total revenue of $2.82 billion was an improvement of 7% year-over-year and also better than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.75 billion. This was primarily due to the fabulous growth of Telnet and J:COM operations, which provides broadband services in Belgium and Japan respectively.  Quarterly GAAP net loss was $120.3 million or 45 cents per share compared to a net loss of $308.9 million or $1.01 in the prior-year quarter. Satellite TV major Dish Network Corp.’s (DISH) third-quarter earnings slipped 12.3% on higher subscriber-related costs and litigation expenses associated with TiVo Inc. (TIVO). The company reported earnings of $80.6 million, or 18 cents per share, compared to $91.9 million, or 20 cents in the year-ago quarter and well behind the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 43 cents. The Englewood, Colorado-based company said total revenue declined 1.5% to $2.89 billion, from $2.94 billion in the year-ago period. The decrease was caused by a 0.8% contraction in subscriber related revenue to $2.86 billion as average monthly revenue per subscriber (ARPU) reduced by $0.31 to $69.51. Edison International's (EIX) adjusted EPS of $1.09 in the third quarter of fiscal 2009 pushed past the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.05 by 4 cents. However, adjusted EPS for the quarter fell short of the year-ago $1.46 EPS.

On a GAAP basis, the company reported quarterly EPS of $1.23, compared to $1.33 in the year-ago quarter. The discrepancy between GAAP and adjusted EPS were due to non-cash accounting benefit from the final regulatory approval to transfer its Mountainview power plant to utility rate base.

Edison's revenue fell 14.7% year-over-year to $3.7 billion from $4.3 billion. The downside was more prominent in electric utility revenue (83.7% of total revenues), which decreased 11.6% year-over-year. Competitive power generation revenues fell 27.2% to $592 million. Financial services and other revenues were only $7 million in the reported quarter from $14 million in the year-ago quarter.
