M&A in Videoconferencing Market – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 17th, 2009) Writes:
Merger and acquisition activities are heating up in the unified collaborative solutions market that provides videoconferencing. Prompted by the severe economic downturn, business enterprises on a global basis are restricting travel budgets to control costs. This makes high-definition telepresence solutions a cost-induced alternative in an increasingly interactive world. This market stands to gain in the near future since enterprises, governments, and educational institutions are increasingly recognizing the productivity-enhancing benefits of video conferencing. Yesterday, Cisco System Inc. (CSCO) raised its acquisition price to $3.41 billion for Tandberg ASA, the largest videoconferencing product maker in the world with around 35% market share. Cisco itself is a developer of high-end videoconferencing solutions, which mainly comprises custom-designed digital boardrooms for executives and boards to hold global meetings. The merged entity will definitely be a much bigger player in the industry. On Nov 10, computer accessories maker Logitech International SA (...

Nokia Sues Apple – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 23rd, 2009) Writes:
The battle for supremacy in the global smart-phone market is getting intense by the day. Now the matter has entered the courtroom. Yesterday, the largest smart-phone maker in the world, Nokia Corp. (NOK) filed a complaint against Apple Inc. (AAPL) with the Federal District Court in Delaware, alleging that Apple's legendary iPhone has violated as many as ten Nokia patents from 2007.   These ten patents related to technologies fundamental to making mobile handsets, which are compatible with one or more of the GSM (2G), UMTS/WCDMA (3G) and wireless LAN ( for Wi-Fi connectivity) standards. Technically these patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption for smart-phones. Nokia said that the company spent more than $60 billion in the last two decades to develop the wireless industry's strongest and broadest IPR portfolios, consisting of 10,000 patents. So far the company has entered into patent licensing agreements ...

Nokia Boosts Social-Networking – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 30th, 2009) Writes:
Nokia Corp. (NOK) has acquired Dopplr Oy, a privately held social-network service provider for mobile devices. Dopplr offers services to travelers. This acquisition will provide technical know-how to Nokia in creating internet-based communities and showing their journeys, experiences and tastes collectively on the web. Nokia will integrate Dopplr’s services with its own Ovi application suite especially with its NAVTEQ system that provides comprehensive digital map information to international jetsetter professionals. The financial term of this acquisition is however still undisclosed.  Nokia is trying hard to solidify social-networking offerings of its mobile phones. Earlier this month, the company announced a partnership with social-networking giant Facebook to innovate a next-generation personal and location-based internet application. Nokia expanded its Ovi ecosystem for increasing number of third party open partnerships. In last August, the company entered into an agreement with its former arch rival Microsoft Corp.
