Gannett Beats Zacks Consensus

Gannett’s quarterly earnings of 44 cents a share surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 38 cents as well as the company’s expected guidance range of 39 cents to 42 cents a share. However, earnings fell 42.1% year-on-year from 76 cents reported in the prior-year quarter due to an 18.4% decline registered in the total revenue of $1,336.6 million.

On a reported basis, including one-time items, earnings came in at 31 cents a share, down 55.1% from 69 cents posted in the year-ago quarter.

Gannett is facing the same dramatic decline in advertising revenue as the rest of the newspaper industry. Publishing advertising revenue tumbled 28.4% to $699.6 million, after falling 32.0% in the second quarter and 34.1% in the first quarter. Publishing circulation also dipped 4.9% to $284.3 million.

Although the decline in publishing advertising revenue narrowed for the reported period compared to the previous couple of quarters, no real strength was witnessed in the advertising environment. Although murmurs about advertisers returning to the market are gaining ground, the positive effects have yet to be realized in the current financial results.

Broadcasting revenue also slipped 23.1% to $151.5 million due to the absence of Olympic and political advertising, besides sustained softness in the automobile category. The only segment to show a sharp rise was digital. Revenue soared 84.2% to $143 million due to the consolidation of CareerBuilder results.

Like Gannett, other newspaper companies such as Washington Post Company (WPO), Journal Communications (JRN), McClatchy Company (MNI) and The New York Times Company (NYT) have long been grappling with the slump in print advertising demand amid the global meltdown as advertisers are migrating to the Internet driven by increasing readership and lower ad prices online than in print.

Gannett Co. Inc. (GCI), the largest newspaper publisher in the U.S., recently reported third-quarter 2009 results. Despite a faltering economy and decline in print advertising revenue, the company’s earnings topped expectations, buoyed by effective cost-cutting measures, lower newsprint expense, reduction in headcount and pay cuts. Operating expenses dropped 14.4% to $1,179.6 million.

The publisher of 84 daily newspapers in the U.S., Gannett recently raised $500 million in two $250 million tranches due 2014 and 2017 to repay outstanding debt under its revolving credit facilities and term loan. The company lowered its debt by $197 million in the quarter and $504 million year-to-date.

WPO: Margins Contract in Mainstay Education Business

Washington Post Company (WPO) posted 1Q09 results that proves even the higher education business isn't impervious to a recession.

The publisher of its namesake newspaper and Newsweek magazine reported that 1Q09 EPS from continuing operations excluding one-time charges plunged to $0.41, grossly missing our estimate of $3.37 and the consensus of $3.48. EPS in 1Q08 was $5.68. Including the myriad charges, the company lost $2.04 in 1Q09, after earning $4.08 for 1Q08.

As expected, strong cable TV earnings partially offset accelerating declines in the company's newspaper, magazine and television broadcasting businesses -- which together generate nearly one-third of the company's revenue. Unexpected, however, was the margin contraction in the Education division.

While better known for its Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper, Washington Post Company derives more than half its revenue from its Kaplan education business, which has been growing strongly and, together with its cable operations, has been offsetting some of the company's publishing losses. But in 1Q09, Kaplan's Higher Education division -- an international network of fixed-facility and online colleges, which generate 35% of WPO's revenues -- used a big hike in ad spending to fuel a 26% rise in revenues, squashing margins to 10.7% in 1Q09 from 14.8% in the year-ago quarter.

Kaplan's other two Education businesses fared worse. The Professional division -- 10% of WPO's revenues -- also sagged under the weight of a sinking economy, spawning operating losses as revenue fell 13%. Improvement hinges on an overall economic recovery. Kaplan's third and most well-known business, Test Prep, generated just 12% of WPO's revenue but 40% of its losses in 1Q09, as it took charges to close its money-losing Score centers.

In line with the industry, WPO's Newspaper division leaked more red ink, as cost-cutting failed to keep up with falling revenue. The division generated an operating loss of $40.4 million, ex $13.4 million in one-time charges, as revenue fell 22%. Ad revenue at The Post plunged 33% in 1Q09, a similar rate suffered by The New York Times Co. (NYT) and The McClatchy Company (MNI) and that we expect to see at Gannett Co, Inc. (GCI) and The E.W. Scripps Company (SSP). Online revenue -- which had been the newspaper's only growth engine until 4Q08 -- slid 8% in 1Q09.

Also suffering from the carnage in the advertising market is WPO's Broadcast Television division (10% of WPO's revenues). TV operating income tumbled 21% in 1Q09 and we expect the decline to accelerate as earnings lap increasing amounts of election-related political advertising in 2008.

The sole engine of WPO's earnings growth was the Cable division - 17% of total revenue. Cable operating earnings soared 23% on a 5% rise in revenue, as WPO leveraged costs.

Longer-term, we think the company will continue to grapple with the secular decline in its newspaper and broadcasting operations -- high fixed cost businesses which account for nearly one-third of the company's revenues As readers migrate to the Internet and TV viewers seek other forms of entertainment (e.g. cable, DVDs, video games and Internet), ad dollars for WPO shrink. Online operations could take years and a change in business model to compensate for falling print revenue.

The battered economy and consequent weak ad spending are exacerbating the deterioration with no visibility to improvement. WPO's education and cable divisions (52% and 17% of revenue, respectively) are two long-term bright spots, although we lack confidence in Kaplan's ability to reinvigorate near-term earnings growth by cutting advertising in a recession.

While the stock is trading at 10x our estimate of depressed 2010 EPS, higher than our 8% estimate of the company's 5-year growth rate, it pays a relatively low dividend (2.1%) at a time of high uncertainty. We are maintaining our Hold rating.

Gannett Outlook Gloomy Despite Strong Growth at USATODAY.com

Gannett (GCI) shares rocketed 14% today after the company reported that online advertising revenue at USA Today, its flagship domestic paper, grew 27% year-over-year in February.

This is the largest online revenue increase among the national newspapers, and is in stark contrast to many, including The New York Times (NYT), which began to suffer recession-induced declines in online ad revenues in 4Q08. The Tech section of USATODAY.com drove growth, doubling its unique visitors to 1.9 million.

Newspapers have scrambled to build website operations as readers and advertisers move online. Many are now suffering the consequences of an ad-only business model. Future survival will likely necessitate a fee-based system, whether in the form of subscriptions or micro-payments for mini-subscriptions (columns, blogs, sections, etc.).

Despite vigorous growth, revenue from USA Today's nascent online operations was not enough to compensate for tumbling print advertising revenue, and together they fell 18.5% in 4Q08. Revitalized print ad revenue is dependent on the economy, for which there is no visibility.

While USA Today's growing online operations underscore the long-term franchise value of the nation's largest newspaper, in the near-term, Gannett's overall revenues at its U.S. and U.K. newspaper and television broadcasting operations are falling faster than it can cut costs. Not surprisingly except one (GM) there are only financials and banks in top ten. The one of the highest yield was for financials compared to other sectors already before credit turmoils. And after deep fall we can see almost incredible yield over 30% for MBI.
