Neah Power Systems, Inc. (NPWZ.OB) Displays Multi Fuel / Oxidant Capability of the Neah Cell

QualityStocks (November 16th, 2009) Writes:

Neah Power Systems, Inc. today described its unique ability to utilize multiple fuel solutions to power methanol-powered fuel cells. The company’s porous silicon design allows for the use of a variety of oxidants and fuels, including oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and nitric acid, while the anode loop has been run with several concentrations of methanol and formic acid for its fuel.

Danny Wilks, Research Scientist, Neah Power Systems, explained, “All electrochemical cells have two fundamental parts: an anode and a cathode. These electrodes act in much the same way as terminals in a battery. The anode catalyzes a fuel source such as methanol to harvest electrons that are then ‘donated’ to the reaction. The electrons are then transferred to the cathode where an oxidant is catalyzed to accept the donated electrons. The flow of electrons in this reaction is how electricity is generated in an electrochemical cell. On the anode loop,

VIASPACE, Inc.’s (VSPC.OB) Focus on Developing Revenue Streams in Renewable and Alternative Energy Markets

QualityStocks (November 16th, 2009) Writes:

VIASPACE Inc. is a clean energy company focused on products and technology that reduce or eliminate dependence on fossil fuels and other high-pollutant energy sources. The company is developing revenue streams in targeted segments of the renewable and alternative energy markets through two of its subsidiaries – in the renewable space, VIASPACE Green Energy and in the alternative energy space – Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation.

For the renewable energy markets, the company’s subsidiary – VIASPACE Green Energy – is cultivating Giant King Grass, a proprietary, fast-growing perennial grass. This grass will be used for the production of non-food, low carbon liquid biofuels for transportation and as a renewable, low-carbon substitute for coal now being burned as the heat source in stationary electric generating power plants.

In order to generate recurring revenues, the company is pursuing long-term contracts in this area to supply

GE to Sell Security Systems – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 11th, 2009) Writes:

General Electric Co. (GE) is in talks to sell its security systems unit, most likely to United Technologies Corp. (UTX), for more than $1.5 billion in an effort to reshuffle its extensive portfolio and raise capital for strategic acquisitions.

United Technologies Corp. is a diversified company whose products include Carrier heating and air conditioning, Hamilton Sundstrand aerospace systems and industrial products, Otis elevators and escalators, Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines, Sikorsky helicopters, UTC Fire & Security systems and UTC Power fuel cells. The company has been lately looking to expand its security business.

GE’s move to sell its fire alarms and security division comes as it is finalizing a bigger deal to hive off its NBC Universal television and movie unit into a joint venture controlled by the cable operator Comcast.  Strategically, GE wants to raise funds to expand its core businesses – which include infrastructure, oil and gas equipment,

VIASPACE, Inc. (VSPC.OB) – The Fuel Cell Comes Down To Earth

QualityStocks (November 4th, 2009) Writes:

There was a time when the term “fuel cell” was linked almost exclusively with America’s space program. The fuel cells in space used hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity for manned spacecraft, with the side benefit of producing drinking water. Few people will forget the near loss of Apollo 13 when a short circuit ignited oxygen inside a fuel cell tank. The resulting explosion crippled the craft, which eventually made it back to earth thanks to a level of creativity and intensity on the part of the crew and ground support personnel that can only be described as heroic. But fuel cells were around long before all that, and are now taking on a major role in more down-to-earth applications.

Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert a fuel, such as methanol or hydrogen, into electricity without burning. The principle behind the

FuelCell Energy Inc. (FCEL) Announces California Legislation to Extend Green Energy Incentives through 2015

QualityStocks (October 22nd, 2009) Writes:

FuelCell Energy Inc. is a global leader in the development and production of stationary fuel cells with established partnerships with major power plant developers and power companies around the world. The company recently announced that California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation set to promote continued development and use of alternative energy technologies through 2015; in response, FuelCell said it expects the legislation to boost demand for its fuel-cell products.

Governor Schwarzenegger signed an extension to the Self-Generation Incentive (SGIP) program to extend funding for various clean energy technologies, including FuelCell’s ultra-clean stationary fuel cell power plants.

Since its inception in 2001, SGIP has provided support for roughly 15 megawatts of FuelCell’s Direct FuelCell power plants in California. The program was created to promote on-site production of electricity to alleviate strains on the state’s utility grid while reducing greenhouse gases.

“California has always led the way in the deployment of clean

Mantra Venture Group Acquires Worldwide Exclusive License for Mixed Reactant Fuel Cell Technology

Stuart Smith (September 9th, 2009) Writes:

Sep. 9, 2009 (PR Newswire) — SEATTLE, WA, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ – Mantra Venture Group Ltd. (’Mantra’, OTCBB: MVTG, FSE: 5MV) is pleased to announce that it signed a worldwide exclusive licensing agreement for a Mixed Reactant Fuel Cell (MRFC) technology on September 2nd, 2009. Unlike typical fuel cells that require a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) to separate the fuel from the oxidant within the cell, MRFC is based on an innovative technology that mixes the fuel with the oxidant and eliminates the need for the expensive yet fragile membrane. As a result, Mantra anticipates a simplified and much more cost effective manufacturing process upon commercialization.

MRFC was designed by Professor Emeritus Colin Oloman in the Clean Energy Research Center (CERC) at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Under the direction of Prof. Oloman, Mantra’s technical staff is currently undertaking feasibility studies on the MRFC technology – using formate
