F-35 Engines Gather Steam – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 2nd, 2009) Writes:
General Electric Co. (GE) and Rolls-Royce Group are gathering support for the second F-35 engine program, which Defense Secretary Robert Gates and President Barack Obama have singled out as unnecessary in the tightening credit environment. Representatives of the two companies met top Pentagon officials recently to offer a fixed-price package on about 100 low-rate production engines for the F-35 fighter.

The deal would cover low-rate production engines to be built from 2012 to 2015. Without F-35, GE would be out of the large fighter-aircraft engine business. Gates recently reiterated his opposition in Fort Worth, Texas, where Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) builds the F-35. Lawmakers backing the program are of the view that continuing work on a second engine will stimulate competition and lower costs on the massive $300 billion fighter program in the long run.

United Technologies Trim F-35 – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 26th, 2009) Writes:
United Technologies Corp.'s (UTX) Pratt & Whitney unit recently announced that it was investing substantially to lower costs for the F-35 engine in the longer term. Of late, the company has been working extensively with the government in this respect.

The measures undertaken by the company include engineering changes, which might require government investment in some cases, extensive efforts to cut supplier costs and improve the production process of engines.

The estimated price for Pratt engine was slated to rise to $8.3 million per engine from $6.7 million, the biggest increase since 2001.

While the company’s efforts could result in prices dropping below the third lot of low-rate production engines, it would not be as low as the price after production of 250 engines.

Pratt & Whitney is trying to improve the quality of certain engine parts but the overall acceptance level is currently around 97%. Certain parts

Russia Talks about Building New Bombers, Again

Robert Amsterdam (August 20th, 2009) Writes:
tupolev081909.jpgWow, it is really starting to feel like military Thursday.  Here's another story from Wired's Danger Room reminding us that why Washington isn't really all that concerned over Russia's frequent gestures of hostility:

Depending on whom you ask, Moscow's bomber threat is about to get a lot more dangerous -- or it was never all that dangerous to begin with.

Lately, Russia has had to make do with aircraft left over from the 1980s. The Russian strategic bomber force -- 16 Tu-160 Blackjacks and 64 Tu-95 Bears -- is roughly half the size of the U.S. bomber force, but more importantly, the Russian birds have not been significantly upgraded in 20 years. Most of them cannot use any kind of precision-guided bomb, making them mostly useless

Lockheed’s F-35 Increases Its Reach to Sea – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (July 29th, 2009) Writes:
Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT), the nation's largest defense contractor, unveiled yesterday the carrier variant of the F-35 fighter plane. The F-35 variant, known as F-35C Lightning II, is the first-ever stealth fighter added the U.S. Navy's arsenal.

Lockheed Martin is focusing on F-35 as its primary growth driver in the Aeronautics segment to offset the loss of F-22. The Senate recently voted to stop production of the F-22 plane, putting it as too advanced for the recent trend of low-intensity warfare.

Subsequent to the end of the second quarter of 2009, Lockheed Martin's Aeronautics segmental order backlog was $27.9 billion. The F-35 is slated to replace the F-16 and A-10 fleets. As per media reports, the Pentagon will have to procure about 3,000 F-35 variants over the coming decade for the purpose. The F-35 has three variants, of which two of them are land based differing on the take-off and

End of the road for F-22 – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (July 22nd, 2009) Writes:
On Tuesday July 21, the Senate voted 58-40 and sent Lockheed Martin Corporation’s (LMT)) F-22 fighter to an early perdition. The air superiority fighters had entered the air force in 2005. The vote removed $1.75 billion set aside for seven more F-22s in the $680 billion 2010 defense bill.  The twin-engine F-22 Raptor fighter touted as the most advanced in the world was shelved primarily due to a lack of sophisticated planes to shoot at. Although advocates of F-22 put forward the Chinese and Russian menace, it looked too far fetched to convince the Senate and the White House.  The U.S. already has 187 of these Raptors. But the need of the day to tackle ground enemies dictates more low-cost F-35 Joint Strike Fighters and unmanned UAVs. The defense bill has thus allotted berth to 30 F-35s in the armory, which are also manufactured by Lockheed Martin. ...

Moog Results Reflect Impact – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (April 27th, 2009) Writes:
Impacted by the effects of the global economic recession, particularly on its Industrial Systems business, Moog Inc. (MOG.A) reported a down -- albeit still nicely profitable -- fiscal 2009 second quarter with EPS of 55¢ versus 66¢, on sales of $453.3 million as compared to $466.8 million.Overall Net Sales were down by 3.3%. By segment: Aircraft Controls Sales of $162.0 million and Components Sales of $84.5 million were both up marginally by 0.3%; Space & Defense Controls Sales of $68.3 million were off by 2.5%; Industrial Controls Sales were down significantly by 19.7% to $104.5 million; and Medical Devices Sales of $34.0 million were up a whopping 49.5%, primarily because the recent AITECS and Ethox acquisitions contributed $6.7 million to Sales this year and nothing last year.Within Aircraft Controls, Military Aircraft Sales of $106.8 million were up by 9.2%, while Commercial Aircraft Sales declined ...

Moog Reports Down a Smidge – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (January 26th, 2009) Writes:

Moog (MOG-A) reported Q1-09 results today. Sales were down just a smidgeon from $446.4 million to $446.1 million. Surprisingly, EPS were up by 9.4% from $0.64 to $0.70.

However, this occurred because the tax rate dropped from 34.8% last year to 16.8% this year due to a domestic tax credit as well as the effect of a dividend from Moog's Japanese operation. More indicative of the effect of flat sales on Moog's profitability was pretax income, which dropped 14.3%, from $42.4 million to $36.4 million.

With respect to the various markets Moog addresses, military aircraft sales rose by 16.3% while commercial aircraft sales were down by 16.4%. Within those two sectors, military was aided by a 35.9% increase in F-35 sales, while commercial was impacted by a 38.2% decline in sales to Boeing (BA), mostly because of the recent machinist strike, as well as a 17.7% reduction in shipments to
