Surmodics Inks Licensing Deal – Analyst Blog

On Tuesday, SurModics Inc. (SRDX) announced that it licensed its drug delivery technology to Roche (RHHBY) and its wholly owned subsidiary, Genentech. Drug delivery technologies create and support site specific drug delivery polymers and coating technologies for use in drug/device combination products in chosen markets.    Under the terms of the agreement, SurModics is entitled to an up-front payment of $3.5 million. Furthermore, the deal could be worth up to $200 million in delayed payments if multiple products are successfully developed. SurModics will also receive royalties on product sales. SurModics will receive payments for its development services. Under the terms of the agreement, Roche and Genentech have the right to obtain manufacturing services from SurModics.   The transaction provides Roche and Genentech complete access to the biodegradable microparticles developed by SurModics. Kollins has resigned from his position with the Company and also as a member of the Board of Directors in order to pursue other interests. Soon after the news was out in the market, shares of OxiGENE dropped but later on it bounced back to $1.36 in the afternoon trading. Markets finally snapped their winning streak last week, as weakness in housing markets and durable goods orders led to broad-based declines in all of the major indices. All told, the Dow surrendered 155 points on the week to close at 9665, down 1.6% on the week but up 10.1% on the year. The Nasdaq lost 2.0% on the week to close at 2090, up 32.6% on the year, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 posted losses of 2.2% and 3.1% respectively, paring their yearly gains to 15.6% and 19.9%.
