Increasing Alzheimer’s Patients Spell Drug Profits

Investment U (September 22nd, 2009) Writes:

Increasing Alzheimer’s Patients Spell Drug Profits

Some disturbing figures rolled out yesterday concerning growth rates of Alzheimer’s patients. The number of people affected grew 10% in the past four years and is expected to grow to over 115 million by 2050. That’s a doubling of cases every 20 years.

The number is expected to grow because of the diets and activity levels amongst older individuals in developed countries. Apparently we’re getting too much junk food and not enough exercise.

Numbers like that are scary to contemplate for many, especially families with relatives at risk, but they’re statistics that pharmaceutical companies love hearing.

Which is why we thought we’d pull up a few of the leading Alheimer’s drugs and the publicly listed companies that produce them: drugs like Aricept from Pfizer (NYSE: PFE), Exelon from Novartis AG ADR

TTHI Hopeful on AD Treatment – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (July 14th, 2009) Writes:

Early yesterday morning, Transition Therapeutics Inc. (TTHI) and partner Elan Corp. Plc (ELN) announced phase I data on ELND005, which is being developed for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Results showed that ELND005 achieves desired concentrations in human brain tissue and cerebrospinal fluid when administered orally.

The companies also presented preclinical data which showed that ELND005 is associated with preservation of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). This indicates the preservation of nerve cells that are critical to memory function in the brain. These results were presented at the 2009 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease.

ELND-005 is part of an emerging class of disease-modifying drugs that have the potential of reducing disease progression as well as improving symptoms like cognitive function. ELND-005 breaks down neuro-toxic fibrils, allowing amyloid peptides to clear the brain rather than form amyloid plaques, a hallmark pathology of AD.

ELND-005 is currently in

Exelon Axes Jobs to Save Costs – Zacks Tale of the Tape

Zacks Market Commentaries (June 18th, 2009) Writes:

Exelon Corp. (EXC) said it would record a $40 million severance charge in the second quarter for slashing 500 jobs as part of its restructuring initiative.

The nation's largest nuclear power company has been trying to cut costs in order to buffer itself against a slump in demand for utilities amid the ongoing recession. Its plans to lay off employees, freeze executive compensation and other incentives are expected to yield $350 million in annual savings. Exelon currently employs about 17,000 people.

While 12 analysts on average expect the Chicago, Illinois-based company to earn 98 cents per share in the second quarter, the most accurate estimate is pegged at 94 cents.

Exelon is still pursuing its hostile $5 billion bid for Princeton, New Jersey-based NRG Energy Inc.(NRG) that could create the biggest power producer in the country. NRG's annual general meeting next month is expected

Energy Blast – June 4, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (June 4th, 2009) Writes:
According to President Medvedev, the current value of Urals at $60-70 a barrel is 'a fairly just price'.  Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has said the government will need more time to decide upon whether or not to approve the construction of the Nord Stream pipeline.  Putin has reportedly said that the nations participating in the pipeline project are willing to change the route to take into account Finland's environmental concerns.  At a press conference the Prime Minister reiterated pleas that Europe help Ukraine with its gas payments, or otherwise transit from Russia might cease.  'Gazprom will only supply the gas which has been prepaid. Without the gas pumped into storage, Ukraine will simply not survive and will be forced to take gas destined for transit', Putin also warned journalists.  In the fourth contract with US ...

Utilities Companies Consolidating – Exelon (EXC) Bids for NRG Energy (NRG)

QualityStocks (October 20th, 2008) Writes:

In this time of uncertainty, there is one thing definitely clear – people will continue to need and use utilities. That’s the wager that nuclear power giant Exelon is making as it put in a $6.2 billion bid for NRG Energy. If the deal goes through, Exelon would become the nation’s largest power company. Two years ago, NRG declined an offer from Mirant Corp for $8 Billion.

The combined Exelon and NRG would be big enough to power nearly 45 million homes with 47,000 megawatts. It would have a diverse power mix and a market capitalization of $40 billion. If NRG agrees to the deal, it would be the second big power generation merger announced in the past month. A unit of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is buying wholesale power generator Constellation Energy Group Inc. of Baltimore for the bargain price of $4.7 billion.

“This company combined would be the
