Exelon Corp. (EXC) said on Thursday that a majority of NRG Energy Inc. (NRG) shareholders supported its $6.2 billion hostile bid even though the company chose to ignore the offer.

The largest U.S. nuclear power operator announced that 51% of NRG investors had tendered 125.4 million shares of common stock by a second deadline. 45.6% of NRG shares had been tendered by the initial deadline of January 7. Exelon will now extend its tender offer to June 26.

Last November, the NRG board had rejected Exelon's offer to exchange each NRG share for 0.485 Exelon shares, saying it grossly undervalued the Princeton, New Jersey-based company. NRG owns power plants with more than 24,000 megawatts of generation.

The results announced on Thursday will increase pressure on NRG's board of directors to accept the offer which could lead to creation of the largest power generator
