Corruption and Death in Russia

Robert Amsterdam (November 18th, 2009) Writes:
Voice of America has published an important piece on the death of Hermitage lawyer Sergei Magnitsky and the practice of medical blackmail in Russian prisons:Magnitsky developed problems with his pancreas and gall bladder as a result of what his American business associate, Jamison Firestone, described to VOA as filthy prison conditions. They included a tiny cell with two other people, no hot water, a shower once a week, and a kitchen above a hole in the floor that served as a toilet.Firestone says the denial of medical care resulted in a slow motion killing by Interior Ministry officials seeking to hide corruption Magnitsky helped expose. The Ministry is often referred to by its Russian abbreviation, MVD. "The MVD increased pressure on Magnitsky by telling him he could no longer ...

Markets rebounded last week, on the strength of upbeat productivity and manufacturing reports that led to solid gains in all of the major indices. Despite news that the unemployment rate had hit its highest levels in 25 years, the Dow managed to end the week up 310 points, gaining 3.2% on the week to close at 10,023, up 14.2% on the year. The Nasdaq posted a gain of 3.3%, closing at 2112 and extending its yearly gains to 34%, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 advanced 3.2% and 3.1% respectively on the week to bring their YTD performance to 18.4% and 16.2%.

Several better than expected economic reports provided buying incentive throughout much of the week, as investors managed to shake off the previous week’s negative bias to send indices into positive territory

Galleon Paid Millions For Inside Information – Financial News

Trading School (October 29th, 2009) Writes:

Galleon hedge fund’s owner Raj Rajaratnam was charged with insider trading. It paid around $250 million to its banks this decade. Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) and Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) were Galleon’s foremost hedge-fund service providers.

Galleon’s short term trading strategies had it pay huge amounts to banks. Its employees also had to remain in close contact with salespersons and traders at Wall Street. Large buy and sell orders, important market developments and discussions on “one page sellers” of shares became common place with its officials, all such information sharing prohibited by the bank policies.

As a Goldman Sachs executive rightly puts it, “They cared about short-term returns and cared a lot about the impact of their trading and the costs. They expected a lot of market information.” But a leak of corporate information seems to be more of a reason for prosecution than is market information sharing. The case

Let China’s Middle Class Lead You Into Luxury

Investment U (October 28th, 2009) Writes:

Let China’s Middle Class Lead You Into Luxury

Tony Daltorio, Investment U Research

According to the World Bank, the global middle class could grow to 1.15 billion in 2030 – a huge jump from the 430 million middle class folks in 2000.

Driving the extraordinary growth is… you guessed it, the emerging “BRIC” nations. In 2000, developing countries like China, Brazil and India accounted for 56% of that number. But by 2030, analysts expect it to climb as high as 93%… with China alone accounting for 52% of the expected increase.

This represents a tremendous amount of wealth. A Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) executive compared it to adding a city the size of New York to the world… every three months.

Needless to say, that opens up amazing opportunities. But in order to succeed, companies who want to profit from this

AIG to Pay Tardy Executive Reward – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 26th, 2009) Writes:
American International Group Inc. (AIG) said on Friday that it is paying $12.1 million in retention awards to some of its top executives. The company took this decision after it got approval from U.S. pay czar Kenneth Feinberg, who is scrutinizing the pay practices of the seven companies including AIG that received the biggest federal aid.   Chief Financial Officer David Herzog received $1 million and Kristian Moor, Chief Executive of AIG's property-casualty division, received $1.6 million. Jay Wintrob, CEO of AIG's domestic life and retirement services also received a payment. The payments were promised in 2008 to retain key employees.   Previously, U.S. Treasury Department pressed AIG to reduce $198 million in scheduled retention payments after the government missed the opportunity to defend against controversial bonuses paid to AIG employees last year.  However, AIG is currently trying to repay $85 billion it had borrowed from the ...

Energy Blast – October 16, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (October 16th, 2009) Writes:
The Moscow Times reports that TNK-BP intends to invest $1.3 billion in upgrading refineries in Russia and Ukraine over the next five years.  Transneft has announced that second-quarter net income advanced 71% from the same period last year.  Total has reportedly received approval from a Russian regulator to purchase a 49% stake in the operator of a gas condensate field in northwest Russia.  China Petrochemical Corporation may help Rosneft fund a Russian refinery in the Far East.  Rosneft is apparently looking for licenses to more than 30 oil and gas deposits in the Arctic offshore area.  Kaisun Energy Group has announced it will buy out a Russian oilfield company, Nobel Holdings Investments, invested in by China Investment Corp.  Kaisun's share prices rose to a record high following the announcement.  Developing oil in Iraq will ...

The Three Roadblocks to Sony’s Turnaround

Contrarian Profits (October 8th, 2009) Writes:

Sony Corp. (NYSE ADR: SNE) is facing the first consecutive annual loss of its 63-year history.

The Tokyo-based company lost $1.1 billion (98.9 billion yen) last year, and it expects to lose another $1.4 billion (120 billion yen) in its fiscal year ending March 31.  That would be Sony’s first back-to-back annual loss since the company went public in 1958.

And despite renewed optimism within its ranks, Sony still faces a plethora of challenges, including a questionable direction, cost-conscious consumers and a strengthening yen.

The onetime bellwether of the electronics industry has seen its market share crumble in almost every category: Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s (OTC ADR: NTDOY) Wii game console has supplanted Sony’s PlayStation brand, Sony has given up its lead in portable media players to Apple Inc.’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPod, and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is now the world’s largest seller of televisions.

Hoping to turn the

Ford’s Volvo Gets Another Suitor – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 6th, 2009) Writes:
A U.S.-led group – the Crown consortium – has revealed its interest to acquire the ailing Volvo unit from Ford Motor Co. (F). The group included former Ford director Michael Dingman and former Ford and Chrysler executive Shamel Rushwin. In 1999, Ford had acquired the Volvo Car Corporation from Sweden-based Volvo Group for $6.45 billion. However, the company put up the unit for sale in December last year in an effort to cut costs and raise cash amidst plunging industry-wide auto sales. Ford had discussions with many automakers for the sale, including Renault SA and China’s third-largest automaker, Dongfeng Motor Group. So far, China's Geely Automotive has submitted the only concrete bid for the unit. Media reports have disclosed that Geely has valued the unit at around $2 billion. Rumors had spread that Crown consortium had offered significantly less than Geely, but both plans involved ...
