Green: The Secret to Resurrecting Your Nest Egg in 2009. br /By Natalie Pace, author of a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1593154917?ie=UTF8tag=antiquestocka-20linkCode=as2camp=1789creative=9325creativeASIN=1593154917"Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is: Investment Strategies for Lifetime Wealth from a #1 Wall Street Stock Picker/aimg src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=antiquestocka-20l=as2o=1a=1593154917" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /br /Date: January 27, 2009br /br /Did you know that clean energy was the top performing industry in 2007, returning almost sixty cents on the dollar for investors? That was almost double the returns of the 2nd highest performing industry -- oil and gas -- at 32 cents for each dollar invested. And, thanks to President Obama’s American Reinvestment and Recovery Plan, clean energy is poised to be the top performer again in 2009. br /br /In his first White House blog, dated January 24, 2009, President Obama wrote that his Recovery and Reinvestment Plan will “invest in our most important priorities like energy and education.” The details of the plan, which President Obama is currently lobbying with Congressional members, is available online at WhiteHouse.gov and includes the following target expenditures:br /br /Recovery and Reinvestment Plan of 2009br /1. Create or save three to four million jobs over the next two years “in a range of industries from clean energy to health care”br /2. Launch a Clean Energy Finance Initiative to leverage $100 billion in private sector clean energy investments over three yearsbr /3. Double renewable energy generating capacity over three yearsbr /4. Modernize “more than 75% of federal building space, saving taxpayers $2 billion per year in lower federal energy bills”br /5. Modernize 10,000 schoolsbr /br /Now, for those who are skeptical of Washington’s ability to get anything done before the next Ice Age, returns on green investing are not just dependent upon the President’s ability to win votes with Congress. There is a worldwide push for clean energy. In fact, Europe, Eastern Europe and China are far more proactive about greening their grid than the U.S. br /br /Germany was one of the first countries to embrace solar energy with its “family program.” Solar panels were installed on many homes in that country over the last five years. Germany’s team, Technische Universität Darmstadt, even won the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon competition in 2007! The next Solar Decathlon will be held on the Washington Mall in Washington D.C. October 9 through 18, 2009, where 20 international teams will compete to design and build the most attractive, energy-efficient solar-powered house.br /br /Link:br /a href="http://www.solardecathlon.org/"http://www.solardecathlon.org//abr /br /China launched a new clean energy initiative, “Electric Vehicles for Ten Cities,” on January 6, 2009, which will put 1000 electric cars per year for three years in each of ten target cities. (Now if those were Tesla Roadsters, I might just move to one of those cities myself!) On Monday, January 26, 2009, the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced a plan to achieve solar energy as China’s dominant energy source by 2050. Other European and Eastern European countries are modeling Germany’s incentives to jumpstart their own clean energy plan and are committed to powering their grid with renewable energy with large-scale solar harvesting projects.br /br /Europe, Eastern Europe and China are the biggest clean energy customers to date, accounting for the strongest sales growth in any industry on Wall Street over the past three years. Solar giants, like Suntech Power Holdings, MEMC Electronics and LDK Solar are profitable, with a strong backlog of orders and high profit margins, at 12%, 20% and 24% respectively. MEMC Electronics (a silicon manufacturer) sales were $2 billion in 2008, up from $1.5 billion in 2006. Suntech’s 2008 sales were $1.8 billion, compared to $600 million in 2006. LDK Solar’s sales have exploded from $105 million in 2007 to a projected $750 million in 2008. br /br /On January 5, 2009, Xiaofeng Peng, Chairman and CEO of LDK Solar, reported, “Our operations remain at full capacity, with contract backlog remaining strong for 2009." The LDK Solar sales expectations for 2009 are $2.3 to $2.5 billion. br /br /So, while most industries worldwide are contracting, and many, like real estate and banks, are showing catastrophic losses, solar energy is profitable, growing – largely on worldwide government incentives and investment -- and healthy. Electric cars and component industries, like lithium mining and lithium ion battery makers, aren’t profitable yet, but the winds are favorable for growth and government incentives worldwide as well.br /br /There is one trick to investing green, however. As I outline in my new book, Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is, the challenge of investing in an industry that is exploding with potential and new technology innovations, is that when innovation is occurring rapidly, it’s difficult to predict a clear winner because tomorrow’s invention could create a new breakout technology. Additionally, clean energy has been around since the 1970s and some legacy corporations are carrying too much debt to compete with the new stalwarts, many of which are based out of China. For these reasons, a clean energy Exchange Traded Fund (ETF), which owns a basket of clean energy companies, is a better policy for most investors than picking an individual stock. br /br /4 Key Steps to Adding Green to your Nest Egg:br /br /1. Include a Green ETF as one of 10 diversified Exchange Traded Funds in your nest egg. br /2. Keep a percent equal to your age, plus 15-20%, SAFE, i.e. not invested in the stock market, since we’re in a recession.br /3. The safest place for your money in 2009 is Treasury bills and high rated bonds. br /4. Rebalance twice a year to capture gains and buy into underperforming ETFs.br /br /Remember to “overweight” 20% safe in 2009, since we’re in a recession, keeping 70% safe if you are 50, and 50% safe if you are 30, etc.br /br /For more nest egg strategies that work in bull and bear markets, buy and read my new book, Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is.br / br /span style="font-weight:bold;"span style="font-style:italic;"About Natalie Pace:/span/spanbr /Natalie Pace, is the author of a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1593154917?ie=UTF8tag=antiquestocka-20linkCode=as2camp=1789creative=9325creativeASIN=1593154917"Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is: Investment Strategies for Lifetime Wealth from a #1 Wall Street Stock Picker/aimg src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=antiquestocka-20l=as2o=1a=1593154917" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /, a featured teacher in the movie, Spiritual Liberation, and CEO of one of the most respected, independently owned financial news corporations in the U.S. She has been ranked as a #1 stock picker from TipsTraders.com and has partnered content with Forbes.com, Sohu.com, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and more.
There are lots of ways to make money from a falling stock market, some speculative, and some not so risky. And it is a good thing too, because small investors need a way to protect themselves, and even make money on the downside. Hopefully, the stock market is near the bottom, but if it has a long way to go before it finishes dropping, then here are several options to choose from.br /br /span style="font-weight:bold;"1. Shorting Stocks/spanbr /br /OK, let's get this one over with first because it is one of the most speculative ways of making money in a bear market. In simple terms, you make money when the stock goes down and you lose money when the stock goes up. What technically happens is that you borrow the shares and immediately sell them (this all is done electronically through your brokerage firm) and since you owe those shares, you eventually have to buy them back at some price, hopefully a lower price. The difference between your sale price and eventual purchase price is your profit.br /br /Can you make a lot of money shorting stocks in a bear market? Yes. Is it speculative? Very. Can you lose a lot? Most definitely. This is why it is so risky. When you short a stock, the lowest point it can drop to is zero. Whereas, if the stock goes up, the amount it can rise is unlimited. Let's say you short 100 shares of a stock at $20 a share. If you put up funds equal to 100% of the value of the shorted amount, and the stock drops to zero, you've made a 100% return. However, suppose the stock goes from 20 to 100, you end up losing 400% of your money with lots of margin calls along the way. br /br /Have I shorted stocks? Yes. Have I made money from shorting? Yes, especially during the last few months. Have I lost a big chunk of my profits by closing out my short positions and going long, trying to predict the bottom a few weeks ago? In the interest of full disclosure, yes. I made the second worse decision I could have made when shorting, and that is predicting the bottom of the market too soon. The worst decision would have been to hold on to my short positions after the market bottoms and starts to make a quick rise. Often when the market bottoms at the end of a bear market, the rise is very sharp and fast, and can totally wipe out short position profits very quickly and then some.br /br /But even on a short term basis, an investor can lose money very fast. A friend of mine, who is a trader, told me that he does a lot of shorting but always hedges his shorts by buying calls to protect himself in case the stock moves up. When I told him that I never hedge my individual stock shorts, he said "You're kidding! I never give advice to anyone, but I'm going to give you some advice. Never short a stock without hedging. You might be watching the market, then get up and go to the bathroom, come back a half hour later and discover that you've been wiped out!" br /br /Even though my bathroom breaks are not that long, he does have a good point. A few months ago, shortly after I shorted a high stock price real estate investment trust, the position went against me by 13 points. That's a $1,300 loss for every hundred shares in one day! I still had the short position after the market closed, and had the pleasure of trying to sleep at night, wondering if there was going to be a takeover the next morning or some other good news that would drive the price even higher, making my losses worse.br /br /So in summery, do I think you should short stocks? Absolutely not. The risk is unbelievable. If you understand options real well, hedged short selling might be OK, as long as you are an advanced trader, and know what you're doing.br /br /span style="font-weight:bold;"2. Short (Bearish) ETFs/spanbr /br /A new financial animal appeared on the scene a few years ago, a type of Exchange Traded Fund called the Bearish ETF or Short ETF. What these ETFs do is provide a return opposite to the return of the index, sector or industry that it is tracking. br /br /A list of a href="http://WallStreetNewsNetwork.com"15 bearish ETFs/a can be found at WallStreetNewsNetwork.com. For example, the Short Dow30 ProShares (DOG) provides a return that is the inverse of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. If the Dow goes down 2%, the DOG goes up 2%. The Short QQQ ProShares (PSQ) ETF gives a return that is the inverse of the NASDAQ 100 Index. If you are bearish on gold, you can buy the PowerShares DB Gold Short ETN (BGZ) ETF. br /br /The nice thing about these short ETFs is that your losses are limited. Also, if you are long individual stocks that you don't want to sell, these can be good for protecting your portfolio on the downside. br /br /span style="font-weight:bold;"3. Leveraged Bearish ETFs/spanbr /br /If you like volatility, you will love the leveraged bearish ETFs. What these ETFs do is provide double, and in some cases triple the inverse return of indices. a href="http://WallStreetNewsNetwork.com"WallStreetNewsNetwork.com/a has a list of 40 leveraged bearish ETFs, such as the UltraShort Telecommunications ProShares (TLL), the Rydex Inverse 2x SP Select Sector Health (RHO), the UltraShort Consumer Services ProShares (SCC) and the Rydex Inverse 2x SP Select Sector Tech (RTW). br /br /In addition there are a href="http://WallStreetNewsNetwork.com"four triple leveraged bearish ETFs/a. Talk about price moves! The volatility of these things is unbelievable, and so are the wide bid and asked spreads that I've seen occasionally. br /br /The advantage of these trading vehicles is that they are a way of shorting on margin, with a limit on the downside. The disadvantage is that the losses are quick and large, especially with the triple leverage short ETFs.br /span style="font-weight:bold;"br /4. Bear Funds/spanbr /br /It may be hard to believe, but there are actually a large number of bearish mutual funds for the long term bearish investors. WallStreetNewsNetwork.com came up with a href="http://WallStreetNewsNetwork.com"30 bear funds/a, including the Grizzly Short Fund (GRZZX), the PIMCO StocksPlus TR Short Strategy Institutional Fund (PSTIX), and the ProFunds Bear Investors Fund (BRPIX). These funds have minimum investments ranging from $1,000 to $5,000,000. br /br /I'm not sure why anyone would invest in these unless it is for some kind of a long term hedge, and these days, who's investing long term?br /br /span style="font-weight:bold;"5. Puts/spanbr /br /A put is the option to put your stock to someone at a particular price within a certain period of time. In other words, if you own a stock that is trading at 22 and you buy a put at a dollar [puts and calls are priced on a per share basis, so a put at $1 would cost $100 for 100 shares] which gives you the right to put your stock to someone at $20 per share within three months, there are a couple of things that could happen. The stock could tank to $14 a share and you could put your stock at 20, or just resell the put for 6. You would be far better off than just doing nothing. And if the stock goes up or stays about the same, you are just out your $100 for the option. Puts can be useful for experienced traders.br /br /span style="font-weight:bold;"6. Cash/spanbr /br /There is one other way to make money in a bear market. Sell everything, and keep your money in cash, preferably a T-bill money market fund, that only owns T-bills. (Repos are supposed to be just as safe, but these days, I would look for the ones that just own the T-bills.) The advantages are that you can't lose money and you can receive an income from the investment. br /br /I've been putting off writing this article because I kept thinking that we were so close to the market bottom that making money in a bear market would be a moot point, yet the market kept on dropping. Maybe now that I've published this article, it will really be the market bottom, and you can save this article for the next bear market in six or seven years.br /br /iAuthor does not own any of the above mentioned securities./ibr /br /By a href="http://Stockerblog.com"Stockerblog.com/a.div class="blogger-post-footer"div class='adsense' style='text-align:center; padding: 0px 3px 0.5em 3px;'

Last week, NYSE completed its acquisition of the Amex, prompting more consolidation within the industry.

The parade of exchange-traded products over to NYSE Arca is continuing this week, with First Trust Portfolios and iPath transferring exchange-traded portfolios to NYSE from the American Stock Exchange.

Since the NYSE announced its acquisition of the Amex, it has been as if July Fourth came early to the ETF world, with many providers moving portfolios to the NYSE Arca platform en masse.

Last week, NYSE completed its acquisition of Amex, and with the closing of the deal, cemented its position as the largest ETF platform: NYSE Arca now hosts 680 of the total 813 industry ETFs, and more than $320 billion in exchange-traded product assets (see story).

In the most recent ETF moves related to the NYSE-Amex deal, Barclays said it will transfer its iPath CBOE S&P 500 BuyWrite Index ETN to NYSE Arca as of October 31.

Barclays expects to move all Amex-listed ETNs and ETFs to NYSE Arca by the end of October.

The Vanguard Group, among other ETF providers, also recently moved a slate of ETFs over to NYSE Arca (see story).

In the case of First Trust, the ETF parade is slated for the first week of November, with 29 portfolios in all moving over to the NYSE Arca platform. The affected ETFs are:

They may be afraid of shorting stocks, and with regards to puts, some investors don't understand them, and others just don't like the premium, the volatility, and the expiration. For some investors, Short ETFs are an alternative.

An ETF or Exchange Traded Fund is structured to track various stock indices or the inverse of various stock indices. Most are traded on the American Stock Exchange. Depending on the ETF, it may even pay a yield. Here are several ETF's which will rise when stocks drop.

Short Dow30 ProShares (DOG) has a goal of the inverse of the daily performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average index. In other words, when the Dow drops, this ETF goes up. The fund has a yield of 2.53% .

Short Financials ProShares (SEF) goes up when the Dow Jones U.S. Financials index goes down.

Short MSCI EAFE ProShares (EFZ) goes up when the MSCI EAFE index goes down. MSCI EAFE is a stock market index of foreign stocks, Morgan Stanley Capital International, Europe, Australasia, and Far East.

Short MSCI Emerging Markets ProShares (EUM) goes up when the MSCI Emerging Markets index goes down.

Short MidCap400 ProShares (MYY) goes up when the S&P MidCap 400 index goes down. The fund has a yield of 3.55% .

Short Oil & Gas ProShares (DDG) goes up when the the Dow Jones U.S. Oil & Gas index goes down.

Short QQQ ProShares (PSQ) goes up when the the NASDAQ 100 index goes down. The fund has a yield of 3.13%.

Short Russell2000 ProShares (RWM) goes up when the Russell 2000 index goes down. The fund has a yield of 1.72% .

Short S&P SmallCap600 ProShares (SBB) goes up when the S&P SmallCap 600 index goes down. The fund has a yield of 2.68% .

Short S&P500 ProShares (SH) goes up when the the S&P 500 index goes down.
