Cyberonics, Inc. (CYBX) reported second quarter fiscal 2010 earnings per share of 32 cents, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 20 cents and the year-ago earnings of 14 cents.   Sales Net sales in the reported quarter increased 13.0% year over year to $40.7 million. Of this, net product sales in the domestic market increased 15.1% year over year to $33.5 million. Growth was due to higher average selling prices (ASPs) and sales volume. ASPs and sales volume increased 10.0% and 5.1% year over year, respectively.   International sales increased 4.3% year over year to $6.8 million. Growth can be attributed to higher sales volume made through distributors, which was partly offset by lower ASPs. Licensing revenues constituted the remaining $0.4 million. Cyberonics, Inc. (CYBX) entered into two collaboration agreements in the field of EEG-based seizure detection technology to bolster its leadership position in epilepsy. The collaborations are with NeuroVista Corporation and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  The License Agreement with NeuroVista Corporation entered on Oct 1, 2009 provides Cyberonics with access to a wide range of technology and patents in exchange for payments extending through Apr 2011. Details regarding the payments have not yet been disclosed.  The NeuroVista technology includes an algorithm for seizure detection, a rechargeable battery system, wireless communication, and an implantable lead and will help Cyberonics accelerate its development of an implantable pulse generator. Depomed has announced that they have achieved success in the late stage clinical trial of a drug that will be used for the treatment of pain following viral infection shingles. Yesterday, Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (VRX) announced the failure of its drug candidate, retigabine, in a mid-stage study. The trial evaluated retigabine for pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which is common in shingles. The company’s shares closed down 8.5% at $ 24.85.

Retigabine was tested in 187 PHN patients versus placebo for a period of up to ten weeks in approximately 50 locations. The drug was administered once daily in doses of 300 mg to 900 mg. In the final week, patients rated their pain on a scale of zero to ten. While retigabine was generally well tolerated, the study failed to meet its pre-specified primary efficacy endpoint. Valeant is analyzing the data further.
