Producer Price Index Tame – Analyst Blog

Dirk Van Dijk (November 17th, 2009) Writes:
In September, the Producer Price Index rose by 0.3%. While this is an acceleration from the 0.6% decline in September, it is well below consensus expectations of a 0.5% increase. All of the price pressures were coming from food and energy. If they are stripped out to get the Core Producer Price Index, prices fell by 0.6% for the month -- a much faster decline than the 0.1% decline last month, and even farther below the consensus expectations of a 0.1% increase for the month. Both food and energy rose by 1.6% at the finished level in September. For energy, though, it was just a partial reversal of the 2.4% decline in September. In September, finished food prices fell only 0.1%. On a year-over-year basis, the total Producer Price Index is down 1.9%. However, last month the year-over-year decline was 4.8%. Thus on a year-over-year basis, the ...

BlueFire Ethanol, Inc. (BFRE.OB) Expands in Mississippi, Fueled by $3.8M Department of Energy Reimbursement

QualityStocks (November 5th, 2009) Writes:

BlueFire Ethanol Fuels, Inc. received a reimbursement from the Department of Energy (DOE) for $3.8 million, signifying a continued commitment by the current administration and the DOE to bolster such alternative energy sources.

The liquidity provided by this reimbursement will allow BlueFire to capitalize the development of its second ethanol plant, to be located in Fulton, Mississippi. BlueFire is currently operating under a $40M grant from the DOE received in 2007.

BlueFire’s ethanol refining from non-food cellulosic biofuel is achieved via its fully operational, and proprietary, Concentrated Acid Hydrolysis Technology Process. This technology presents a robust solution to the disposal of waste plant matter and a powerful framework for agricultural production of high-yield cellulosic feedstock. The forms of ethanol produced are competitive with gasoline and commercially ready for use in an existing market infrastructure.

CEO of BlueFire, Arnold Klann was quoted as saying, “The DOE’s continued financial support coupled with the

Contributions to GDP Growth – Analyst Blog

Dirk Van Dijk (October 29th, 2009) Writes:
Not all components of GDP are created equal. Some are very big, and others relatively small. Some tend to be very stable over time, and some tend to swing violently from quarter to quarter. The bigger and more volatile they are, the more they will impact the overall growth rate of GDP. Thus looking at just the percentage changes in the components does not tell the full story. Of the 3.5% total growth, how many points were added or subtracted by each part of the economy? The biggest part of the economy is the Consumer, or PCE -- overall it contributed 2.36 of the 3.50 points of total growth. In the second quarter it caused 0.62 of the 0.70 total decline in the 2Q. In the first quarter it actually offset 0.44 points of the 6.40 total decline. In other words, excluding the Consumer the economy would ...

Markets extended their winning streak yet again this week, as all ten sectors of the S&P 500 finished in positive territory and markets hit fresh highs for the year once again, despite the lack of any significant developments on either the corporate or economic fronts. All told, the Dow ended up 2.2% on the week, gaining 214 points to close at 9820 on the week, up 11.9% on the year. The Nasdaq performed slightly better, gaining 2.5% on the week, closing at 2132, up 35.2% on the year, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 gained 2.5% and 4.1% respectively, up 18.3% and 23.7% on the year.

While it was a relatively quiet week as far as headlines were concerned, there were some positive economic developments in the form

Solar Energy’s Future Shines Brightest in China

Contrarian Profits (September 14th, 2009) Writes:

With the announcement that it intends to build the world’s largest solar power plant, China is rapidly evolving into the world’s largest market for solar energy. And with heavy government backing, Chinese solar companies are quickly becoming global leaders.

Fast-growing industry and a reliance on coal-fired power plants turned China into the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gas a few years ago. Clouds of smog far thicker than that of Los Angeles hang over many of its cities and much of the water is densely polluted. But that’s something the central government aims to change.

China plans to reduce energy consumption per unit of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 20% of 2005 levels by the end of next year. It’s more immediate goal is to reduce reliance on coal-fired plants to 60% of its energy production from 70%, and replace with renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

Since 2007, about 54

South Korea is the 10th largest economy in the World. The Korea Government has a program to spend $45 billion over the next 5 years in Environment Projects.

While there is an obvious need to minimize the generation of wastes and to reuse and recycle them, the technologies for recovery of energy from wastes can play a vital role in mitigating the problems. Besides recovery of

Four ETFs Profiting From Green Energy

Investment U (July 9th, 2009) Writes:

Four ETFs Profiting From Green Energy

Tony Daltorio, The Investment U Research Team

It doesn’t take an genius to see the writing on the wall for green energy.

Governments around the globe from the United States to Europe to China are clearing the way for investors to make some “green” while investing in green-energy technologies.

Clean energy technology has been a universal component of government stimulus packages around the globe. Here in the United States, President Obama continues to focus the spotlight on clean energy with many visits to such projects around the country. Over $100 billion from the administration’s stimulus package has been designated for the advancement of clean energy technologies.

Congress is currently trying to cobble together perhaps the most far-reaching climate and energy legislation ever. The legislation would not only initiate a “cap and

QualityStocks (July 2nd, 2009) Writes:

Energtek Inc., a prominent leader in alternative energy technologies, is currently engaged in developing and commercializing Absorbed Natural Gas (ANG) technology. ANG technology allows for the storage of comparable natural gas quantities at reduced pressure, thereby significantly lowering the costs of capital investments and operation.

Although in recent years the commercialization of ANG technology stalled because of unsolved technological problems, Energtek’s determined efforts have resulted in a solution to some of the key problems of the future gas and transportation industries. The result of this research and development effort led to the first commercially efficient system of ANG storage.

Energtek Inc. focuses on natural gas solutions for a variety of reasons; not only is it cheaper and more readily available than gasoline, it also has an impeccable safety record and burns cleaner than any of its counterparts. The company is poised to benefit greatly
