Solar Energy Initiatives (SNRY.OB) – Harnessing the Power of the Sun

QualityStocks (November 6th, 2009) Writes:

Solar Energy Initiatives Inc. is dedicated to reducing the world’s dependence on fossil fuels by selling thermal and photovoltaic (PV) technologies while building a profitable company. To this end, they are developing one of the fastest growing dealer networks in the U.S. to sell and install solar solutions to homeowners as well as commercial customers.

The company recognizes that energy from the sun can be used in different ways. Most obvious is the sun’s light, which is used everywhere, via windows, skylights, and solar tubes. But the sun’s thermal energy has been used for a long time for passive solar room heating, hot water and pool heating. And improving technology has now led to an increasing use of the sun’s energy to generate electricity, not only in large solar power plants, but at the individual home and business level.

The 2009Q3 Advance GDP Release and Stimulus Measures

Menzie Chinn (October 29th, 2009) Writes:

The 3.5% growth rate was, in my view, in large part attributable to direct measures to stimulate the economy, including direct spending on goods and services by the government (Federal, state and local), as well as tax measures. First, let's take a look at how each category of final demand accounted for total growth, in the context of a mechanical decomposition, in Figure 1.

Figure 1 breaks down the contributions of overall growth into the broad national income accounting components (overall investment decomposed into fixed and inventory investment). Interestingly, the contribution of government is fairly modest in Q3 (Note change of vertical axis

Eaton Beats Own Expectations – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 19th, 2009) Writes:
Electrical equipment maker Eaton Corp. (ETN) reported third quarter earnings of $1.21 per share, beating its own guidance of 80-90 cents per share and the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 91 cents per share. Better-than-expected earnings in the quarter were primarily a result of substantial reduction in costs.   However, quarterly earnings were down 38% from the year-ago profit of $1.95 per share. The company’s cost-cutting efforts were more than offset by lower sales and a stronger dollar.   Eaton’s revenues fell 26.4% year over year to $3 billion. The revenue decline was a result of 23% decline in core sales and a 3% negative impact of foreign exchange translation.   The company witnessed double digit sales decline across its segments. The truck and the Hydraulic segments posted sales decline of 35% and 34%, respectively. These segments witnessed more than 40% decline in the U.S. markets. Hydraulic markets outside ...

Today in Russian Business – October 12, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (October 12th, 2009) Writes:
President Medvedev has reportedly said that the damage caused by the financial crisis was far worse than expected and the economy may contract by 7.5% this year.  In an interview with state television, Medvedev designated priorities for economic modernization: 'energy efficiency [...] information products, both ground- and space-based; nuclear energy [...] and pharmaceuticals as we must produce our own medicinal drugs'.  The President also said that Russia will need as long as 15 years to reduce its reliance on raw materials.  Avtovaz plans to start the production of Renault and Nissan vehicles in 2012, suggesting that the French automaker is attempting to comply with the Kremlin's demands for financial commitment.  Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has called for domestically produced medicines to represent at least 50% of total sales in Russia within three years, from the current 20%.  Media ...

IBM Faces Antitrust Hurdle – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 8th, 2009) Writes:
International Business Machines (IBM) has been charged by the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA), a non-profit trade group organized by IBM’s rivals Microsoft (MSFT) and Oracle (ORCL). The allegation is directed at its Mainframe computer business, which is taking revenues and pressurizing profits of its competitors by withdrawing the license access to customers using non-IBM hardware operating systems. The U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) is investigating the allegations against IBM for its conduct in the Mainframe business. Some smaller companies in the banking, government and health care sector develop technologies that would allow the software to run on cheaper hardware. Thus, to freeze competition, IBM has combined its mainframe operating systems with hardware and acquired startup Platform Solutions Inc. Moreover, it has been alleged that IBM has curbed license of its mainframe operating systems to users of Hercules, which is an open-source software that ...
