FCC Votes on Net Neutrality – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 23rd, 2009) Writes:

The US telecom regulator Federal Communications Commission (“FCC") has reportedly voted unanimously for the implementation of the so-called “Net Neutrality" regulation, which is aimed at preventing Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and cable companies from blocking or restricting access to legal web site contents and applications. If enacted, the open Internet rule, which is presently applicable to wireline networks, will be extended to wireless.

All five FCC commissioners (including the FCC chairman Julius Genachowski), represented by three democrats and two republicans voted in favor of the proposed new rule, which will now invite public comments, a process which is expected to continue till Jan 14, 2010. This will be followed by the review of the public feedback by the FCC with a final rule is expected not before March 2010. However, the republicans remain skeptical about the proposed rule.

The net neutrality regulation, which consists of a set of proposals, represents the first

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 23rd, 2009) Writes:

After sliding for two successive days, stocks managed to find some footing and ended Thursday with impressive gains as companies from McDonald’s to PNC Financial reported solid quarterly earnings.  A mixed bag of economic reports notwithstanding, the Dow average once again scaled the 10,000 mark as components Travelers Cos, 3M Co., and AT&T Inc. posted stronger-than-expected results.

Investors, looking for bargains, picked up financial shares as many banks noted lower loan losses.  Travelers (NYSE:TRV) surged almost 8% after reporting a three-fold jump in quarterly profit.  Travelers, together with McDonald’s (NYSE:MCD), led the Dow average higher.  AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), also a Dow component, rose 0.6% after reporting better-than-expected profit.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 132 points, or 1.3%, to close at 10,081.31 and the S&P 500 index rose 11 points, or 1%.  The tech-heavy NASDAQ, limited by late-session, downward guidance from eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY), gained 14 points, or 0.7%.

Zaldiva, Inc. (ZLDV.OB) Identifies Multiple Acquisition Candidates

QualityStocks (October 9th, 2009) Writes:

Zaldiva, Inc. a leader in Pop Culture collectibles, comic books, memorabilia and auctions, today detailed its acquisition strategy as it continues to focus on rolling-up smaller comic and collectibles retailers under the Zaldiva brand. The company has identified its first 5 targets for acquisition.

“We see the comic and collectibles industry being in a very similar situation to the video rental business of days gone by,” stated Nicole Leigh, CEO of Zaldiva, Inc. “Along came Blockbuster and the whole landscape changed. These smaller comic retailers, the ‘mom and pop’ stores, don’t have the infrastructure to compete in the marketplace. We’ve built a solid foundation with our online www.zaldiva.com store and have backed it up with a successful retail location that integrates eBay online auctions.”

Leigh added, “When we talk about ‘rolling up’ or ‘acquiring’ other retailers we are looking at comic book companies with large ’subscriber’ bases, meaning recurring monthly revenues. Margins

Contrarian Profits (September 21st, 2009) Writes:

As traditional print media continues its steep declines in advertising sales and circulation, publishers are struggling to come up with new and creative ways to generate revenue.

Ad revenues in the newspaper industry plunged 16.7% last year to $37.8 million r, according to the Newspaper Association of America (NAA). The 2009 take is estimated to fall another 17.3% to $31.6 billion according to Alan Mutter, a Silicon Valley executive who once lead the newsrooms of the Chicago Sun-Times and San Francisco Chronicle and now writes a blog titled “Reflections of a Newsosaur.”

Mutter’s estimate would put ad revenues at their lowest levels since 1965, when the industry took in $4.42 billion, or $30.22 billion when adjusted for inflation, the Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) reported.

While the worst economic downturn since World War II has eviscerated the fortunes of print media companies like The New York Times Co. (NYSE:

A New Wave of ‘Beatle Mania’… Four Ways to Profit from the Beatles: Rock Band

Contrarian Profits (September 10th, 2009) Writes:

You ready for a good ol’ 1960s rock n’ roll flashback, courtesy of four lads from Liverpool?

Amid a buzz of publicity, yesterday was the day that many Beatles fans had eagerly waited for, with the release of a new video game in the band’s name – “The Beatles: Rock Band.”

If you’re not familiar with the “Rock Band” concept, it’s a bit like karaoke, except you play music in addition to singing. Gamers follow along with their favorite musicians/songs, using an electronic drum kit and guitar, and sing the songs, too.

The game is enormously popular, having generated over $1 billion in revenue. And gamers can download individual songs, albums, or catalogs of groups like AC/DC, The Who and The Grateful Dead. So far, they’ve paid for and downloaded over 40 million songs…

Both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were part of the creative process and have endorsed the game in the
