EMN Faces Uphill Task – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (March 10th, 2009) Writes:
Eastman Chemical Co (EMN) is engaged in the manufacture and sale of chemicals, plastics and fibers. Based in Kingsport, Tennessee, the company has 12 manufacturing sites in the U.S., Europe, and Asia-Pacific, supplying products throughout the world.

Eastman has a strong fibers business and solid financials. The company is likely to benefit from its recent focus on the industrial gasification business. It has undertaken productivity and cost-reduction initiatives as well as organizational restructurings to improve performance and generate cost savings.

Eastman plans to save about $100 million in 2009. However, the company is witnessing rising raw material prices and a declining demand for its products. In addition, lack of free cash flow, PET capacity increases coupled with slowing growth, and PET industry overcapacity force us to rate the stock a Hold with a target of $17.00.

Eastman Chemical a Hold on Costs – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (December 4th, 2008) Writes:
Eastman Chemical Co. (EMN) has a strong fibers business and solid financials. The company is likely to benefit from its recent focus on the industrial gasification business. However, the company is witnessing rising raw material prices and a declining demand for its products. There is a lack of free cash flow, PET capacity increases coupled with slowing growth and PET industry overcapacity. On December 3, 2008, Eastman expects fourth quarter 2008 earnings to be significantly below the prior guidance of 90 cents per share. The company expects sales for the fourth quarter of 2008 to drop more than 20% from the year-ago period. Eastman attributes the drop to the unprecedented volatility in demand and raw material costs. Currently, Eastman is valued at 5.2x our 2008 earnings estimate of $5.53 per share.  We rate the stock a Hold with a target of $27.00. This is ...

Eastman Chem Reacts Positively – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 3rd, 2008) Writes:

Eastman Chemical Co. (EMN) has a strong fibers business and solid financials. The company had an impressive first quarter in 2008, marked by increasing prices, volume gains and strength in several end markets. The company has undertaken aggressive restructuring of its businesses.

The IntegRex PET technology, new product launches in Specialty Plastics and base businesses like CASPI, Fibers and Intermediate products provide stability to its core earnings. The company is also likely to benefit from its recent focus on the industrial gasification business. Thus, we rate shares of EMN a Buy. Accordingly, we have set a new price target of $72.50.

The Beaumont project is expected to contribute approximately $2 of earnings per share. Eastman expects to complete the front-end engineering and design for the Beaumont gasification facility in the second half of 2008 and obtain non-recourse project financing by the end of 2008. The facility is expected to be
