Geron Will Re-initiate Clinical Trials (NASDAQ:GERN)

Geron Corporation (NASDAQ:GERN) today announced that they have reached an agreements with the Food and Drug Administration to re-initiate clinical trials for spinal cord injury. The company said that they plan to advance clinical development of their human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-based product, GRNOPC1 which will be used for the treatment of spinal cord injuries. The plan is to let Geron Corporation restart the Phase 1 clinical trial of GRNOPC1 in patients who are suffering from complete thoracic spinal cord injury and to support the future expansion of the clinical trial with patients who are suffering from cervical injuries.

Soon after the annoucement was made, AVI BioPharma stocks were trading higher on a surge in volume. AVI BioPharma has announced that they have received expanded contract of approximately US$ 11.5 million from the Defense Department that will help them support the development of their drug candidate named as AVI-7012 to treat Junin virus infection. The news made AVI BioPharma one of the NASDAQ’s top performers on Monday and the shares were rallying sharply higher on big volume.

It was a downward slide for the Amicus Therapeutics on Monday when the drug company announced the failure of its drug candidate for Gaucher disease, an enzyme disorder. The shares of Amicus Therapeutics dropped considerably soon after the company came out with the disappointing news about the inefficiency of their drug named Plicera. The shares of Amicus dropped around $2.77, or 32.6 percent to $5.73 in the morning trading.

On Friday, Amicus Therapeutics came out with the news of the failure of their drug candidate Plicera and said that the drug did not appear to work for many patients in the midstage clinical trial as expected and so they had to come out with the sad news. Gaucher disease is an enzyme disorder that can harm the liver and cause neurological complications.

Anavex Life Sciences Corp. (AVXL.OB) Contracts FORENAP for Clinical Trials of Their Alzheimer’s Drug

Swiss-based drug company Anavex Life Sciences Corp. announced today that they have selected FORENAP Pharma as the contract research organization for Phase 1 clinical trials of ANAVEX 2-73, the company’s lead Alzheimer’s drug candidate.

FORENAP has been involved in pre-clinical and clinical research for 20 years and is renowned for its expertise in central nervous system studies, including Alzheimer’s disease. FORENAP will perform study setup, protocol review, site monitoring and project management for the trials. Rudy Luthringer, CEO of FORENAP, said, “We look forward to running a high-quality and cost-effective program as Anavex works to confirm its pre-clinical findings in a clinical setting.”

ANAVEX 2-73 has been shown in pre-clinical testing to be neuroprotective and anti-amnesic. It is thought that the drug impacts mitochondrial dysfunction and it may be mitochondrial protective. Mitochondrial dysfunction is thought by many researchers to be one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease.

Yesterday, ISTA Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ISTA) announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved its drug candidate, Bepreve, for the treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis in patients two years and above. The drug is approved as a twice-daily prescription eye drop treatment. ISTA filed the New Drug Application for the drug (bepotastine ophthalmic solution) on Nov 13, 2008.  As a reminder, the advisory committee of the FDA had recommended the drug in June. The seven-member panel had voted unanimously in favor of Bepreve after reviewing comprehensive safety and efficacy data from ISTA's clinical program.  Bepreve is expected to be available to ophthalmologists and patients in the United States in the fourth quarter of 2009.
