Long Term Evolution (LTE): How to Join the Race for the Next Dominant Broadband Technology

Long Term Evolution (LTE): How to Join the Race for the Next Dominant Broadband Technology

by Sheena Martin, Contributing Editor Wednesday, November 25, 2009

Over the past five years, an incredible new technology has gained momentum and is set to make its debut imminently. And as always, early investors are likely to enjoy the greatest returns.

The technology is known as Long Term Evolution (LTE). And the possibilities are endless: Machine-to-machine communication… wireless communication in cars and household appliances… instant downloads of video conferences.

Simply put, it’s the likely successor to current 3G mobile broadband technology.

LTE offers superior user experience and simplified technology. With seamless mobility services, consumers remain connected through any access technology, such as WiFi, WiMAX, xDSL, FTTx, wherever they are.

So just because your wife dragged you to her colleague’s baby shower out in the backwoods doesn’t

LTE Leading the Next Generation – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 6th, 2009) Writes:
Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology is ahead in the race to be the most sought-after next-generation (4G) wireless network standard in the market. The 4G wireless networks are aiming to cope with substantial demand for high-speed wireless data services and mobile video. The growing acceptance of LTE technology has prompted the mobile handset makers to develop phones that will be compatible with this network. Qualcomm Inc (QCOM), one of the key developers of OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) based chipsets has decided to introduce the trial version of LTE-compatible chipsets during the fourth quarter of 2009. Industry sources predicted that the first LTE handsets may arrive on the market in the second half of 2010, but these next-generation smart-phones may to go mass market by early 2012. NTT DoCoMo (DCM) will launch LTE handsets in 2011 compatible with its current 3G network, enabling the customers ...

Managed Services Growing Bigger – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 29th, 2009) Writes:
Massive deployment of high-speed wireless networks throughout the world has opened up a new market for telecom outsourcing and managed services for several telecom equipment manufacturing firms. The next-generation (3G/4G) wireless networks are aiming to cope with substantial demand for high-speed wireless data services and mobile video.  Telecom service providers are now typically looking at providing the converged IP-based network, offering bundled solutions for triple play voice, video and data. This requires the implementation of complex network architecture.  The telecom outsourcing market generally includes network implementation & maintenance, system integration & managed services, and consulting. In order to minimize their costs, carriers try to concentrate on developing new services, implement a service-oriented business model and marketing.  The market for basic network operation is increasingly seeing the entry of infrastructure suppliers. This generates a huge opportunity for telecom equipment manufacturers to encash.  According to various industry ...

LTE Ahead in 4G Race – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 28th, 2009) Writes:
Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology is ahead in the race as the most sought-after next-generation (4G) wireless network standard in the market. The 4G wireless networks are aiming to cope with substantial demand for high-speed wireless data services and mobile video. LTE is an IP-based modulation standard and a set of enhancement for the existing Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). This technology has been pioneered by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a telecom industry body comprising wireless carriers and equipment vendors who have been buying and selling the same proprietary products for years. Verizon Communication (VZ), the largest carrier in the U.S., and NTT DoCoMo (DCM), the largest carrier in Japan, are the first two companies to decide on implementing LTE–based networks by 2010. Vodafone (VOD), the largest mobile carrier globally on revenue count and AT&T (T) will implement LTE by ...

A Smarter Motorola in September – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 26th, 2009) Writes:

In all probability, Motorola Inc. (MOT) will officially introduce its much-waited 3G smart-phones on Sept 10. Once a global leader in the wireless handset market, Motorola has been struggling for a foothold in the next-generation feature-rich smart-phone market for the last couple of years. The company will unveil two 3G high-end smart phones based on Google’s (GOOG) Android software. According to various industry researches, although the basic mobile phone industry is facing a downturn, the feature rich high-end smart-phones are seeing strong consumer preference.

Motorola announced that its two new 3G handsets will feature an intuitive user interface and an efficient combination of Internet access, messaging, and multi-media applications based on the Android software ecosystem. Currently, more than 6,000 multimedia and social networking applications are available based on the Android ecosystem. Motorola is trying hard to expand this platform using its proprietary MOTODEV program. Management also declared that another

Viewership Rating for Mobile TV – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 21st, 2009) Writes:
FLO TV Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), together with its partner Rentrak Corp. (RENT) recently decided to launch the industry’s first comprehensive audience measurement and reporting system. This innovative technique will provide details of advertising sales on FLO TV and an in-depth study of its viewership pattern. Rentrak is a multi-screen media measurement and research company.

Qualcomm continues to lead mobile video market with the deployment of MediaFLO networks (that offers FLO TV services). In June, the mobile TV industry received a boost when the US government decided to switch to digital TV from analog transmission.

The immediate beneficiary of this was Qualcomm’s FLO TV network, which has already spent $500 million to buy spectrum that has been released. The company will now have the opportunity to broadcast its transmission in 100 major US markets serving more than 250 million potential customers. According

Motorola Wins First LTE Contract – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 20th, 2009) Writes:
Motorola (MOT) recently announced that its Home & Network Mobility business unit was selected as a key development partner of KDDI Corp.’s next-generation LTE (Long Term Evolution) network. This is Motorola’s first public order for LTE technology. KDDI is the second-largest wireless service provider in Japan.

Motorola will implement the basic RAN (Radio Access Network) infrastructure and base stations for the KDDI’s LTE network. Although financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, we believe that the contract size may exceed $1 billion. Earlier, KDDI had estimated spending about $5.3 billion for installing a countrywide LTE network.

KDDI is expected to launch its LTE service in December 2012. The Japanese wireless market is quickly gaining maturity. KDDI faces stiff competition from wireless giant NTT DoCoMo (DCM) and Softbank Corp. NTT DoCoMo will launch its LTE service by end of 2010.

In order to remain competitive, KDDI is
