Recently, Dendreon Corp. (DNDN) announced that it intends to file an amendment to its existing Biologic License Application (BLA) for its prostate cancer vaccine Provenge in Nov. 2009. We believe that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will approve Provenge in the first half of 2010 based on the positive phase III IMPACT (IMmunotherapy for Prostrate AdenoCarcinoma Treatment) trial results announced in Apr. 2009.   If approved, Dendreon will become the first company to receive approval for an anti-cancer immunotherapy based vaccine. In development studies, Provenge boosted survival rates in men with advanced prostate cancer beyond any currently available treatments. Unlike traditional vaccines that prevent diseases, Provenge treats it by stimulating the body's own immune system to attack cancer cells. Retailers will start to release second-quarter results this week, accounting for nearly 10% of the 246 scheduled reports. Dow component Wal-Mart (WMT) will be joined by 15 other members of the S&P 500, including J.C. Penney (JCP), Kohl's (KSS) and Macy's (M).

The Fed will hold a 2-day meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday. No change in interest rates will be made, though the statement should acknowledge that the economy is nearing stabilization.

The bond markets could be volatile, not only because of the Fed meeting, but also because of quarterly refunding. The Treasury Department will auction 3-year, 10-year and 30-year bonds. The offerings should total $75 billion.

Most of the week's economic data will be released after the Fed's meeting, with the exception of the preliminary estimate of Q2 productivity. We'll see the latest industrial production and consumer sentiment numbers on Friday.

I wish I could say I never heard of Dendreon (DNDN) before today, but a reader was good enough to email me about this stock not even a month ago in the $3s. As a general rule, except for some of the really huge biotech stocks, I stay away from these type of names – the stock market is difficult as it is, and small cap biotech stocks make the normal stock market gambling look like child’s play. Of course after today’s news I wish I had investigated further. Outside of the stock reaction, it is hopefully a promising new turn in medicine.
