Markets rebounded last week, on the strength of upbeat productivity and manufacturing reports that led to solid gains in all of the major indices. Despite news that the unemployment rate had hit its highest levels in 25 years, the Dow managed to end the week up 310 points, gaining 3.2% on the week to close at 10,023, up 14.2% on the year. The Nasdaq posted a gain of 3.3%, closing at 2112 and extending its yearly gains to 34%, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 advanced 3.2% and 3.1% respectively on the week to bring their YTD performance to 18.4% and 16.2%.

Several better than expected economic reports provided buying incentive throughout much of the week, as investors managed to shake off the previous week’s negative bias to send indices into positive territory

One viable approach to investing is seeking growth at a reasonable price (”GARP”) — the P/E ratio divided by the earnings growth rate (”PEG”).  It is a method that attempts to make comparison of P/E ratios between companies more meaningful by considering growth rates.

GARP is a hybrid method that has elements of value investing and elements of growth investing.  The method was popularized by Peter Lynch.

Generally, PEG ratios above 2.0 are considered expensive.  Ratios below 1.0 are considered discounted.  Lynch said that attractive PEG ratios are at or near the earnings growth rate of the company.

The method is imperfect, as are all methods, but it widely used.  It is best applied to companies with above average growth rates, but not growth at extreme levels.

Extreme growth rates create silly or impossible ratios.  Companies growing at sprint burst speed cannot sustain those rates, and show unrealistically low PEG ratios.  Companies with negative

ArvinMeritor will provide parts and components of power transmission and basic braking systems to Yutong for the production of Yutong buses and chassis. Under the agreement, in addition to continually providing high-end axle products to Yutong, ArvinMeritor will also offer differential carriers and brake calipers made in its production plant in Wuxi, China, for application in Yutong’s self-made axles.

The final product will be assembled at Yutong's plant in Zhenzhou, China. As part of this partnership, ArvinMeritor and Yutong will also sell and distribute standard aftermarket service kits for its products.
