LAN Posts Discouraging Results – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 27th, 2009) Writes:
Chile-based LAN Airlines S.A. (LFL) yesterday reported discouraging results for the third quarter 2009. Net income of US$52.1 million was 37.3% lower than  net income of US$83.0 million in the third quarter of 2008. Excluding non-operating extraordinary items recognized in the third quarter 2008, net income decreased 58.3%. Consolidated revenues declined 19.1%, driven mainly by lower yields in both the cargo and passenger businesses. This was partially offset by a 14.3% decline in operating expenses, driven mainly by lower fuel costs. Operating income reached US$92.4 million a 46.1% decrease compared to US$171.3 million in the same quarter of previous year. Operating margin reached 10.1%, compared to 15.1% in the same period of 2008. Third quarter 2009 results continued to be impacted by fuel hedging losses, although to a much lesser extent than in previous quarters. The fuel hedging loss during the quarter amounted to US$14.4 million ...

AngloGold, Newmont Expanding – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 7th, 2009) Writes:
AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (AU), the world’s third largest gold producer, plans to expand output through exploration. The company aims to produce up to 6 million ounces annually, up from 4.98 million ounces in 2008, largely by improving its mines and expanding through exploration. AngloGold expects the dollar price of gold to rise. The company has forecasted gold prices of $950 to $1,100 per ounce in 2010. It expects gold prices to rise beyond $1,100 if the downtrend in the US economy continues and investment demand for gold increases further. Although electricity costs and new wage settlements have put pressure on the company's bottom line, it has no plans to lay off workers to save costs. AngloGold is also planning to develop its La Colosa project in Colombia. In July this year, AngloGold had teamed up with African miner Randgold Resources to buy Moto Goldmines, which owns ...

Here’s Why the U.S.-China Tire Tiff Lead to Great Depression II

Martin Hutchinson (September 22nd, 2009) Writes:

[Editor’s Note: When it comes to global investing, longtime market guru Martin Hutchinson is one of the very best – because he knows the markets firsthand. After years of advising government finance ministers, crafting deals with global investment banks, and analyzing the world’s financial markets, Hutchinson has used his creative insights to create a trading service for savvy investors.

Hutchinson’s strategy is tailor-made for periods of market uncertainty, during which investors all too often go completely to cash – only to miss some of the biggest market returns in history when market sentiment turns positive. But it can work in virtually every market environment.

RA in Moscow Times: Clan Politics of Russia, Venezuela, and Iran

Robert Amsterdam (September 17th, 2009) Writes:
image_credit_to_moscowtimes.jpgRobert Amsterdam has an opinion article published in The Moscow Times today:

The recent visits to Moscow and Tehran by Hugo Chavez raise a number of concerns about the deepening relations between Russia, Iran and Venezuela.

The motivation behind the Russia-Iran-Venezuela alliance is often misunderstood. On the one hand, there is the narrative that these governments are pursuing national interests, seeking to deepen their security against ever-present external threats and accrue regional power. Others argue that the alliance is driven by an attempt to build an "alternative architecture" of global relations, one that is conveniently unconcerned with democracy and human rights and bound solely by the common value of anti-Americanism.

Both these assumptions are dangerously misleading. In reality, the foreign policies of these three states are driven by the personal interests

Investing in ADRs: The Most Powerful Way to Reduce Market Risk

Contrarian Profits (September 14th, 2009) Writes:

It’s official: You can reduce your investment risk simply by chucking darts at a list of stocks, then buying them.

That’s if you believe a Nobel economist, of course. His crude “experiment” was the start of “modern portfolio theory” decades ago. The downside, however, was that with a reduction of risk came a dampening of profits. So scratch that idea.

How about this? A startling study in the late 1970s showed that owning a portfolio of large U.S. companies with international divisions drops your risk 10% below a domestic stock portfolio. Much better. But that wasn’t the eye-popper…

The study also found that owning stocks in international companies cuts your risk in half…

Take that, “efficiency” theorists! Yet the stuffy professors still tried to refute these results. It was a losing battle, though, as more studies emerged, laden with more evidence that international stocks reduce risk.

But the

Energy Blast – September 8, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (September 8th, 2009) Writes:
Reuters examines oil prices: with an OPEC meeting imminent, crude prices have stabilized, as analysts expect to see the group agree to maintain its 'official output target stable around $70'.  Russia is surpassing Saudi Arabia in oil exports for the first time in the wake of OPEC production cuts.  'In no uncertain terms, Russia has been the biggest beneficiary of OPEC's sacrifice', says strategist Chris Weafer.  Saudi Arabian Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi believes that the current crude prices - between $68 and $73 a barrel - are acceptable for producers and customers alike.  Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko has met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in an attempt to pursue Russia's aim of reviving Saddam Hussein era oil deals.  President Medvedev says that Russia must refuse requests for Ukraine to prepay natural gas transit fees, (with Kiev prepaying more than ...
