Amid a sluggish retail environment, Collective Brands, Inc. (PSS), a wholesaler and retailer of footwear and related accessories, recently reported second quarter 2009 results. Despite lower operating costs and inventory management, the company continues to experience diminishing top and bottom lines hurt by lower consumer discretionary spending. Collective Brands’ second quarter earnings plunged 42.0% year over year to 29 cents a share, after falling 10.6% in the first quarter of 2009. Collective Brands Inc (PSS) shares received a boost on Thursday after the world's biggest central banks came forward with $180 billion to relieve global financial markets from recent turmoil. The stock had declined significantly after a trademark violation lawsuit was filed against the company by Adidas.

Last Friday, a federal judge lowered the damages due by nearly 80% to $65.3 million, saying that parts of the judgment that went in favor of Adidas in last May were unreasonable. S&P revised its rating on the operator of Payless ShoeSource to "stable" from "negative". Shares did not rebound until today even after the positive developments as the broader markets suffered due to further global economic weakness. Analysts now peg their 2009 EPS view at $1.33, up 20 cents from their prior estimate.
