For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL – December 11, 2009 – Zacks Equity Research highlights Gap, Inc. (GPS) as the Bull of the Day and Energizer Holdings (ENR) the Bear of the Day. In addition, Zacks Equity Research provides analysis on Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), 3Com (COMS) and Cisco Systems Inc.(CSCO).

Full analysis of all these stocks is available at http://at.zacks.com/?id=5506

Here is a synopsis of all five stocks:

Bull of the Day:

We maintain Outperform recommendation on Gap, Inc. (GPS) as we anticipate the company to perform well above the market. The Gap is the leading player in the highly fragmented specialty retail sector, and has a market cap more than double its nearest competitor.

The company has improved its business model by realigning its inventory to sales trends. In addition, the company has a strong balance sheet with adequate liquidity and no outstanding debt. The Gap has also been active on the share buyback front and has been paying a steady dividend.

However, consumer discretionary spending would continue to be under severe stress, which limits the upside potential of the company. Our six-month target price is $24 per share.

Bear of the Day:

Energizer Holdings (ENR) fourth-quarter results missed Zacks Consensus Estimates due to lower sales in Household Products and an adverse currency impact. The company expects growth in earnings for fiscal 2010 driven by continued reduction in overhead costs.

The company stands to benefit from restructuring initiatives, product innovations, strong cash flow and increased debt repayment. However, weaker margins, a delay in stock buybacks, intense competition, a sluggish battery business and increased marketing spending are potential negatives.

We downgrade the stock to Underperform as the company has been hit hard by the global economic crisis, leading to weak demand and prices for its battery business. We expect the negative impact of the economic downturn to continue in the near term. Our six-month price target is lowered to $54.00.

Latest Posts on the Zacks Analyst Blog:

H-P Wins Service Agreement

At a recent press release, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) declared that it’s Enterprise Services division has signed a three-year agreement to improve the performance and quality levels of key application support services of Optus, an Australia-based telecommunications company.

As per the terms of the agreement, Optus will receive management support for applications relating to certain customer billing, data warehouse and other core systems. The company’s applications performance, quality and service reliability will thus be improved.

Although HP did not mention the monetary value of the contract, we believe that this new agreement strengthens the relationship between the two companies.

This is another service agreement, which is a stable and growing line of business for the company.

A few days back, Hewlett-Packard’s Enterprise Services announced that Ahold, an international group of leading supermarket companies based in the United States and Europe, has signed a seven-year infrastructure and applications services agreement, an expansion of its previous agreement.

Under the agreement, HP was to provide management and support services for Ahold’s global data center environment, which includes mainframes, servers and storage. In addition, HP would deploy HP Business Service Automation service to make Ahold’s server and storage capabilities more robust.

So the company is constantly pushing itself to achieve new heights. The recent acquisition announcement of networking major 3Com (COMS) will enable it to challenge networking leader Cisco Systems Inc.(CSCO), while the new business deals and service agreement will generate additional revenues for the company.

Upcoming Holiday Shopping Season

Most of the companies in the apparel, confectionery and cosmetics sector are expected to benefit from the holiday shopping season.

Leading apparel company Gap Inc. (GPS) recently reported strong quarterly earnings, boosted by sales at its low-price Old Navy chain. Gap is now focusing more on improving its business model by striking the right balance between its cost structure and merchandise by better aligning inventory with sales trends. The company is upbeat about its performance in the upcoming holiday shopping season, as management is focused on gaining market share by presenting a strong value proposition to customers across its brands.

The other leading retail business, Limited Brands (LTD) reported almost a 50% year-over-year increase in earnings during the fiscal 2009 third quarter. The company is confident about its strong performance during the holiday shopping season and has lined up holiday themes focused on offering core products and seasonal gifts.

The Hershey Company (HSY) also posted strong profits during the recently reported quarter. The company is making the required consumer investments for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL – November 23, 2009 – Zacks Equity Research highlights Caterpillar (CAT) as the Bull of the Day and Cost Plus, Inc. (CPWM) the Bear of the Day. In addition, Zacks Equity Research provides analysis on Gap Inc.(GPS), J.M. Smucker Company (SJM) and Stone Energy Corporation (SGY).

Full analysis of all these stocks is available at http://at.zacks.com/?id=5506

Here is a synopsis of all five stocks:

Bull of the Day:

Caterpillar (CAT) is a market leader in construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, and industrial gas turbines. With its strong brand name, pricing power and global dealer network, we believe Caterpillar is well positioned to take advantage of the growing need for infrastructure development globally.

Though the company expects 2009 sales to decline more than 35% year-over-year, it anticipates an improvement in its top-line in 2010. The company forecasts a 10% to 25% increase in sales for 2010, compared to the midpoint of the 2009 outlook range.

Asserting its optimistic outlook, the company recently announced plans to increase its machinery prices by 2% effective January 2010. We are upgrading the stock to Outperform.

Bear of the Day:

Specialty retailer Cost Plus, Inc. (CPWM) is closing stores, cutting costs, and trying to preserve cash, but those moves will do little to reverse its weak sales trends and merchandise margins.

In addition, management's guidance for the third quarter cautioned investors to prepare for more weakness. Cost Plus expects same-store sales to decrease 6%-11% and a pre-tax loss from continuing operations of $19-$24 million.

Cost Plus is scheduled to report third quarter results on December 3. We have an Underperform rating on CPWM shares. Our six-month target price is $0.50.

Latest Posts on the Zacks Analyst Blog:

Gap’s Earnings Improve

Gap Inc.(GPS), a premier international specialty retailer, has reported healthy third quarter results despite challenging market conditions. The company reported net income of $307 million or 44 cents per share during the quarter compared to $246 million or 35 cents per share in the year-earlier quarter.

The robust earnings were primarily driven by strong sales at its low-price Old Navy segment and the highest third quarter operating margins in a decade. Net sales during the quarter were $3.59 billion compared to $3.56 billion in the year-ago quarter, largely due to a 10% increase in comparable sales across 1,060 Old Navy stores that account for about 40% of the total sales.

The Old Navy chain has benefited from the increasing preference among U.S. shoppers for lower-price and discount stores due to the continued challenging macroeconomic environment. Gross margins increased 380 basis points year-over-year to 42.5%. Operating margins during the quarter increased to 13.9% from 11.1% in the year-ago quarter due to effective cost-control measures and prudent inventory management policies.

Smucker’s Beats, Raises Guidance

J.M. Smucker Company (SJM) reported second quarter results with earnings of $1.22 per share, which was well above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 99 cents. Quarterly earnings were up 21% compared to $1.01 reported in the prior-year quarter.

Net sales for the quarter grew 51.7% year-over-year, primarily due to the addition of the Folgers coffee business. Excluding Folgers, volumes increased 1%, driven by Pillsbury, Crisco oils, Jif peanut butter and Hungry Jack brands. These were partially offset by declines in canned milk, fruit spreads, foodservices and natural foods.

On a segment basis -- the U.S. retail coffee market segment posted $445.1 million in sales during the quarter. Volume also increased by approximately 5%. The continued expansion of the Dunkin' Donuts brand in the gourmet category and strong growth in traditional roast and ground coffee led to the improvement.

Stone Energy Outdoes Estimates

Stone Energy Corporation (SGY) reported third-quarter 2009 earnings of $1.06 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 66 cents and the year-earlier earnings of $1.04. The robust results were driven by increased production volumes and reduced costs.

Production during the quarter averaged 239 million cubic feet of gas equivalent per day (MMcfe/d), compared to average daily production of 209 MMcfe/d in the prior quarter and 129 MMcfe/d in the year-ago quarter. This increase was primarily due to the company’s successful execution of its hydraulic rig work over program, reduced cycle time and optimization of individual well rates.

Stone expects net daily production to average 225-235 MMcfe in the fourth quarter and 210-220 MMcfe in 2009.

Zacks #1 Rank Stocks have nearly tripled the S&P 500 since 1988, producing an average annual return of +26%. Performance has been notable even during volatile and down times. For example, during the last bear market, 2000-2002, the market tumbled -37.6% – but Zacks #1 Rank stocks gained +43.8%.

Here is a summary of today's selected stocks that are now highly rated by Zacks:

Underlying the four free stock picks is a simple truth that first appeared in a Financial Analysts Journal article published in 1979. Leonard Zacks, a Ph.D. in Mathematics from M.I.T. found that "earnings estimate revisions are the most powerful force impacting stock prices." Zacks #1 Rank is awarded to a stock when analysts sharply upgrade their estimates of what the company will earn.

Today, Zacks is promoting its stock recommendations by offering four daily picks free to those who register at http://at.zacks.com/?id=5607

About Zacks

Zacks.com is a property of Zacks Investment Research, Inc., which was formed in 1978 by Len Zacks. The company continually processes stock reports issued by 3,000 analysts from 150 brokerage firms. It monitors more than 200,000 earnings estimates, looking for changes.

Then, when changes are discovered, they’re applied to help assign more than 4,400 stocks into five Zacks Rank categories: #1 Strong Buy, #2 Buy, #3 Hold, #4 Sell, and #5 Strong Sell. This proprietary stock-picking system continues to outperform the market by a nearly 3-to-1 margin.

Chicago, IL – August 31, 2009 – Zacks.com announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: Franklin Resources (BEN), United (UAUA), The Gap (GPS), J.C. Penney (JCP) and Family Dollar (FDO).

Get the most recent insight from Zacks Equity Research with the free Profit from the Pros newsletter: http://at.zacks.com/?id=5513

Here are highlights from Friday’s Analyst Blog:

Savings Rate Dips in July

We have already seen a dramatic improvement in the trade deficit over the last year -- more than cutting it in half. However, most of that improvement is due to the fall in the price of oil, and we are past the anniversary of the oil price peak, so that effect is going to fade. We have seen some pick-up in the economies of other major countries recently, but they are far from booming (with the exceptions of China and India, but even there things are going slower than they used to). That does not auger well for a dramatic increase in exports.

Thus, by process of elimination, it means that we will have to dramatically reduce our non-oil imports (or cut the volume of oil imports if we are not getting the help on the price side). The only other option is an increase in Government as a share of GDP.

This is a trend that has all sorts of implications. If we are going to be saving more, it should help investment management companies like Franklin Resources (BEN). On the other hand, if we are consuming less, it means that the consumer discretionary sector will face a particularly stiff headwind. People will take fewer vacations which will hurt airlines like United (UAUA).

Retailers, particularly in the mid-range like The Gap (GPS) and J.C. Penney (JCP) will find growth very hard to come by. Spending will not come to a stop, but it will slow, and people will be more concerned with cost as opposed to cash. This makes discounters like Family Dollar (FDO) relatively much better positioned.

Keep in mind here that I am talking about a trend that will play out over a decade, and it will not be a straight line, so from time to time some of the less-well-positioned firms might be good trades, but I suspect that they will be lousy long-term investments.

Safeway Inc. (SWY), the third-largest supermarket chain in North America, recently appointed Arun Sarin and Michael S. Shannon to its Board of Directors, expanding the number of members from 10 to 12. With these appointments, management brings on board some key industry experts.

Arun Sarin has served the telecommunications industry for most of his career. He was the CEO of Vodafone Group Plc (VOD), the world’s largest mobile phone company by revenue, for a considerable time period. He was also the board member of companies like Gap Inc. (GPS), Charles Schwab Corp. (SCHW) and Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO).

Michael S. Shannon was the founder of KSL Capital Partners LLC – a leading private equity firm primarily investing in travel and leisure businesses. He was the founder and CEO of KSL Resorts. During his long career, he served as a director of Conseco Inc. (CNO), TCA Cable TV Inc., Startek Inc. (SRT) and ING Americas Holdings. He is currently a board member of ING Direct, the Vail Valley Foundation, the United States Ski and Snowboard Association and Eisenhower Memorial Hospital.

Safeway would like to capitalize on the valuable insights provided by these two experienced professionals and benefit from their vast, in-depth knowledge of various industry verticals.

For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL – August 26, 2009 – Zacks Equity Research highlights Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) as the Bull of the Day and Cost Plus Inc. (CPWM) the Bear of the Day. In addition, Zacks Equity Research provides analysis on Ford (F), Honda (HMC) and The Gap (GPS).

Full analysis of all these stocks is available at http://at.zacks.com/?id=2676

Here is a synopsis of all five stocks:

Bull of the Day:

Intuitive Surgical’s (ISRG) story is improving. A new product was developed as an upgrade to the existing daVinci Surgical System. Furthermore, the company enjoys a virtual monopoly in robotic surgery without direct competition.

The company's razor/razor blade business model ensures recurring revenues even during difficult times. In the second quarter, earnings of $1.62 per share were higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.27.

Growth in revenues was witnessed across all the segments. We believe the company will continue leveraging its monopoly position in the industry. We rate this stock Outperform with a target price of $260 per share.

Bear of the Day:

First quarter sales and earnings per share for Cost Plus Inc. (CPWM) were slightly above our estimates. Even so, the company's sales declined 9% year-on-year and it reported a net loss of $20 million.

The company is closing stores, cutting costs, and trying to preserve cash, but those moves will do little reverse its weak sales trends and merchandise margins. In addition, management's guidance for the second quarter cautioned investors to prepare for more of the same.

Cost Plus expects same-store sales to decrease 9.5%-14.5% and a pre-tax loss from continuing operations of $14-$21 million. We have an Underperform rating on CPWM shares. Our six-month target price is 50 cents per share.

Latest Posts on the Zacks Analyst Blog:

Gaining Confidence

The rise in consumer confidence means that "animal spirits" may be returning to Main Street, not just Wall Street. If consumers feel more confident, they are more likely to go out and spend, particularly on big-ticket discretionary items. This will greatly help retailers and the companies that make discretionary items.

Even with the "Cash for Clunkers" program running out again, it means that some folks might just feel confident enough about the future to go out and buy a new car from Ford (F) or Honda (HMC), even if they are not bribed to do so by the Federal Government. It means they might go do their back to school shopping at The Gap (GPS) instead of at the Salvation Army.

In the process, they will increase demand and put people back to work. Those workers will then have incomes that they can spend, further increasing economic activity. In short, a vicious cycle would be turning into a virtuous cycle.

Here are highlights from Tuesday’s Analyst Blog:

Personal Income Falls

If not for government automatic stabilizers and the Stimulus Bill, the overall trend in incomes would be much worse. Demographics are part of the reason that the savings rate is going up, since the Baby Boomers are in a scramble to save for retirement, which is right on the horizon for most of them. If they don’t save (or unless the housing market miraculously turns around and forms another bubble), large numbers of them will simply be unable to retire. The competition for Wal-Mart (WMT) greeter jobs will be intense and sales of cat food will soar (and not for Mr. Whiskers, either).

In large part, the economic growth of the 1990’s and the first part of this decade were a mirage driven by the falling savings rate. This is now being reversed and the economy faces a serious long-term headwind because of it. Keep in mind, though, that once people retire, their savings rate tends to go negative as they live off what they had accumulated over their lifetimes. Thus in about five years, demographics will be forcing the savings rate back down again.

On the plus side, the higher savings rate means that we are capable of funding more of the growing federal debt internally, rather than borrowing from China and OPEC. The rise in personal savings is being offset by an increase in government dis-savings, otherwise known as the budget deficit.

Net-net, though, the overall national savings rate is still going up, but not by nearly as much as the chart indicates. Then again, keep in mind we were running pretty hefty budget deficits even when the personal savings rate was close to zero. That was the combination that led to the country being deep in hock to China. We are still going into more debt abroad, but at a slower rate than we have been in recent years. This is borne out by the shrinking trade deficit.

Long-term, the need to increase the overall personal savings rate is going to be a major negative for the retail industry and all others that depend on discretionary spending. In the short-term, however, I would note that the retailers in general have come in with better-than-expected earnings (very low expectations going in) and are getting estimate increases for this year (and next year to a lesser extent). Still, it should slow their overall long-term growth rates, and as a result should cause them to trade at lower relative P/E’s than they have in the past.

I continue to see retailers that cater to the middle class as being the most vulnerable. Discounters like Family Dollar (FDO) and TJ Maxx/Marshalls (TJX) are likely to pick up share from chains like The Gap (GPS). Yes, there will be some pick-up as the economy finds its feet again, and the effects of the Stimulus Bill are likely to be much bigger in the second half than they were in the first half.

However, this is not going to be a V shaped recovery. History, both domestically and abroad, has shown that recessions caused by financial panics and balance sheet issues tend to last longer and lead to weaker recoveries than do recessions caused by the inventory cycle or by tight monetary policies.

Higher savings rates mean that people will be contributing more to their 401K’s and IRA’s. This should be good news for asset management firms like T. Rowe Price (TROW), so it is not like there will be no offsets to this trend.

Chicago, IL - July 6, 2009 - Zacks.com announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: The Gap (GPS), Limited (LTD), J.C. Penney (JCP), Macy's (M) and ASM International (ASMI).

Here are highlights from Friday's Analyst Blog:

Another Ugly Jobs Report

Even for those who still have a job, things are not good. Average hourly earnings were unchanged for the month, and with a lower workweek that means that average weekly earnings were down by $1.85. While that is not huge, it does mean that people are not going to be keeping up with inflation.

With less money in their pockets and a change in attitude that favors more savings at the margin, people are going to be shopping less. This seems to me likely to affect some of the mid-range stores more than the discounters or those involved in the carriage trade. I see the continued weak employment situation as a big negative for some of the mall occupants like The Gap (GPS), Limited (LTD) and the anchors like J.C. Penney (JCP) and Macy's (M).

ASM International Downgraded

S&P ratings lowered ASM International's (ASMI) long-term credit rating from BB- to B+. The rating revision hinges on the rating agency's expectation of a prolonged downturn for semiconductor equipment companies.

ASMI is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) offering semiconductor manufacturing equipment used in the fabrication of integrated circuits (ICs). Its products are used in both the front and back-end segments of the semiconductor production process. The company was growing revenue and earnings nicely before 2008, but suffered a big setback during 2008 when its earnings declined nearly 70%. The company reported a loss in the first quarter.

Four daily picks are offered free at http://at.zacks.com/?id=5607

Zacks #1 Rank Stocks have nearly tripled the S&P 500 since 1988, producing an average annual return of +28%. Performance has been notable even during volatile and down times. For example, during the last bear market, 2000-2002, the market tumbled -37.6% - but Zacks #1 Rank stocks gained +43.8%.

Here is a summary of today's selected stocks that are now highly rated by Zacks:

Aggressive Growth - The Gap, Inc. (GPS)
The Gap, Inc. continues is long streak of beating Wall Street's expectations despite a down turn in the economy.

The company boasts an industry-leading yield of 3%.

Zacks Guide to Value Investing (free!): http://at.zacks.com/?id=4312

How to Regularly Access Picks from the Zacks Rank Discovery for Free: http://at.zacks.com/?id=5607

Shares of Dress Barn, Inc. (DBRN) are up more than 9% today on heavy volume of 3 million shares, compared to the average of around 1.14 million.

The company has made the Zacks #1 Rank Top Performers List for Thursday after announcing a merger agreement with Tween Brands, Inc. (TWB). (By the way, shares of TWB have soared about 30% in response to the deal.)

Earnings estimates for DBRN have been steady for the past month, but remain higher than 2 months ago. Analysts currently expect $1.05 for the fiscal year ending July 2009, which is 14% higher than 60 days ago.

Meanwhile, the consensus for the fiscal year ending July 2010 is $1.23, or approximately 17% atop this fiscal year's outlook. The past 2 months have seen an almost 13% advance in the guidance.

A Move to Diversify

Specifically, the deal announced today calls for a subsidiary of DBRN to merge with TWB in a stock-for-stock transaction valued at about $157 million. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of calendar year 2009.

The combined company has generated more than $2.4 billion in net sales and operates 2,465 stores, on a trailing 12-month basis.

DBRN, a leading specialty apparel retailer for women, seems especially interested in TWB's Justice concept, which is a leading specialty retailer for tween girls.

"The Justice concept, which offers an attractive mix of well-priced fashion for girls ages 7 to 14, will diversify and complement our existing business," said DBRN President and CEO David R. Jaffe.

Solid Fiscal Q3 Report

But even before the merger's announcement, DBRN was a Zacks #1 Rank, stemming from a strong fiscal third-quarter report in late May.

The company earned 39 cents per share in the quarter, eclipsing the consensus of 31 cents by nearly 26%. Net sales advanced 7% to $375.7 million from $352.6 million a year earlier. Same-store sales were up 3%.

But the biggest reason behind the company's positive trend in earnings estimates stems from its guidance for the fiscal year. The company raised its outlook to a range of $1 to $1.05, compared to its previous target of 70 cents to 85 cents.

DBRN is 1 of 12 companies from the retail - apparel/shoe industry on today's 223-stock Zacks #1 Rank List. Other companies from this space on the list include Buckle, Inc. (BKE), Gap, Inc. (GPS), J. Crew Group, Inc. (JCG) and Monday's top performer Children's Place (PLCE).

There are 11 other companies from the Retail - Apparel/Shoe industry on today's 222-stock Zacks #1 Rank List, including fellow top performers Cato Corp. (CTR), Dress Barn, Inc. (DBRN) and Citi Trends (CTRN). The list also includes Aeropostale, Inc. (ARO), Gap, Inc. (GPS) and Gymboree Corp. (GYMB).

Earnings Estimates on the Move

Earnings estimates on PLCE have been moving in the right direction of late, accounting for a 28% rise in the past 2 months for this fiscal year, which ends January 2010.

In the past 30 days, 4 of 8 covering analysts revised higher, marking a gain of 8.2% in that time.

Next fiscal year's estimates have moved up by 21% in 2 months and 7% in 30 days. Analysts currently expect $2.75 for the fiscal year ending January 2011, which is 15.5% better than this fiscal year's consensus of $2.38.

What About the Quarter?

PLCE announced solid results for its fiscal first quarter in May. The company reported earnings per share from continuing operations of 74 cents, which matched the consensus and bettered the year-ago result. In the past 4 quarters, PLCE has beaten twice, matched once and missed once.

Net sales advanced slightly to $401.9 million from last year's $400.2 million. Same-store sales increased 1%.

However, earlier this month, PLCE announced that same-store sales in May declined, and came in below expectations.

Volume today of 791,000 is a bit below the daily average of almost 1.1 million.

The Committee of Concerned Shareholders

PLCE is at the heart of a proxy battle presently, spawned by a group of shareholders that calls itself the Committee of Concerned Shareholders. The group, which owns about 22% of the company, is led by former CEO Ezra Dabah, who left in 2007.

On Thursday, Jun 18, the group urged shareholders to vote for 3 nominees that it chose for the company's Board of Directors at its Annual Meeting of Shareholders, which is scheduled for Jul 31.

According to the Committee, "The Board's nominees lack the relevant expertise required to lead the company into the future and generate innovation and growth."

A day earlier, PLCE's Board had urged shareholders to vote against the group's nominees, stating "If Mr. Dabah succeeds in electing his three nominees, he will have vastly disproportionate representation on the Board based on share ownership."

For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL - June 16, 2009 - Zacks Research Director, Dirk Van Dijk says that S&P 500 earnings are continuing to show red ink. He tracks companies on the Zacks.com web site, naming names, while forecasting trends for the months ahead.

Key Points

Estimate increases outnumber cuts by 5:4 margin

Second Quarter total net income expected to be down 36.0% year/year

Third quarter expected to be down 23.1% year/year

Full year 2009 expected to fall 12.3%, implies strong growth in fourth quarter

Staples only sector expected to post positive growth in second quarter

Six sectors expected to decline more than 30%

Financials expected to rebound after disastrous 2008

Median EPS growth in second quarter expected to be -19.3%

Bottom up estimate for S&P 500 now $57.27 in 2009 versus $57.25 two weeks ago.

S&P 500 now expected to earn $72.49 in 2010 versus $72.61 last week

Total Net Income Growth

The expectations bar for the second quarter is set very low with total net income projected to fall 36.0%. This is even worse than the 27.3% decline posted in the first quarter. (Note that this is different than what was posted in the last report since the numbers always reflect the current members of the S&P 500 and there have been some noteworthy changes in the index, most importantly the deletion of GM).

Our first peak at the third quarter shows that earnings are still expected to be down year over year, but not by as much, dropping "only" 23.1%.

For both quarters the decline in total net income is expected to be widespread, with only Staples eeking out a small year over year gain (+1.2%). Health Care and Utilities are expected to hold up fairly well with only mid-single digit declines. Every other sector is expected to post a decline of at least 25%. Hardest hit will be 3 economically sensitive sectors: Materials, Energy and Industrials. The first 2 are also commodity oriented, and face very tough year ago comparisons. However, the prices of the underlying commodities have been rebounding, so with the bar set low, they have the potential to surprise to the upside.

Looking ahead to the third quarter, Staples, Health Care and Utilities are again expected to post flattish results. Financials are expected to post extremely strong year over year earnings gains, reflecting the very tough time they had a year ago. The commodity sectors are again expected to face a tough time, but then again with commodity prices on the rise (provided they can be sustained) they might do better than expected.

The Zacks Revisions Ratio: 2009

Revisions ratio for full S&P 500 up to 1.25, from 1.09

Steady climb in the ratio, was 0.32 three months ago

Four sectors in positive territory; Consumer Sectors lead

Revisions ratio is now into positive territory for the S&P 500 as a whole

Industrials continue to see estimates being cut

Ratio of firms with rising to falling mean estimates rises to 1.05 from 0.86

Total number of revisions (4-week total) down to 1,758 from 3,023 (-41.8%)

Increases down to 978 from 1,576 (-37.9%); cuts down to 780 from 1,447 (-46.1%)

Total revisions activity approaching low for the quarter

There has been a steady increase in the revisions ratio, which is now up for 14 weeks in a row. Granted it started at absolutely horrific levels, with estimates being cut at more than 4:1 for the S&P 500 as a whole, and in individual sectors, the cuts were often in excess of 10:1.

This week we finally broke into positive territory, which we define as at least 5 increases for every 4 cuts. We have to conclude that the green shoots are taking hold, at least as far as analysts' projections for earnings.

While I still have my doubts about the group from a longer-term macro perspective, at least for the short term, the analysts disagree with me about the retailers, which have been some of the strongest performers in terms of estimate revisions. Some of the names that have gotten more than 10 estimate increases and no cuts are Gap (GPS), Nordstrom (JWN), Lowe's (LOW) and TJX Companies (TJX).

The Zacks Revisions Ratio: 2010

Overall picture for 2010 similar to that of 2009

Revisions ratio up to 1.25 from 0.96

Tech and Consumer sectors showing best estimate momentum for 2010

Health Care and Utilities getting cut

Ratio of rising to falling mean estimates rises to 1.19 from 0.80

Total revisions activity nearing lows for the quarter

Total number of revisions falls to 1,425 from 2,264 (-37.1%)

Estimate increases falls to 791 from 1,109 (-28.7%), cuts fall to 634 from 1,155 (-45.1%)

Two tech stocks with particularly strong revision ratios are Analog Devices (ADI) and Texas Instruments (TXN).

Earnings Shares and P/Es

Earnings Shares, including historical, based on current make up of S&P 500

Health Care expected to take earnings crown from Energy in 2009 and keep it in 2010

Energy's earnings share expected to plunge to 11.1% from 23.8%

Financials' 2009 earnings share expected to rise to 11.3% from -1.7% in 2008.

12-month forward S&P P/E of 14.55 equates to earnings yield of 6.87%, which is attractive relative to 10-year T-note yield of 3.85%, but only mediocre relative to 5.98% A-rated 10-year corporate.

T-note rates are rising and more realistic earnings yields of near 6.34% based on lower earnings ($60) means the spread, while still attractive, is not overwhelming.
