Here are highlights from Thursday’s Analyst Blog:

Aetna Axes Jobs

In a bid to become more efficient, the health insurer Aetna Inc. (AET) announced on Wednesday its intention to shed a total of 1,250 jobs or about 3.5% of its total workforce by the first quarter of 2010. Management intends to do so in two phases, by slashing 625 jobs now and the remaining early next year.

The company expects to record after-tax restructuring charges of $40 million in fourth quarter 2009. Last December, the company cut 1,000 jobs, which was 3% of its total workforce. The company plans to slash majority of the jobs at its headquarters in Connecticut.

Aetna with a total head count of 35,500 is eliminating jobs to cope with the difficult economic environment and potential impact that the health care reform might cast on its health insurance business. Elimination of excess workforce will help streamline the business by optimizing staffing level, thereby maintaining efficiency.

During the third quarter of 2009, Aetna earned $326.2 million, or 73 cents per share. That represents an increase from $277.3 million, or 58 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Membership has slumped throughout the health insurance sector as employers have cut jobs, reducing the number of people covered by employer-sponsored plans.

Aetna rivals UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH) and WellPoint Inc. (WLP) both recently saw enrollment declines in the third quarter. Last week, Assurant Health, a division of Assurant Inc. (AIZ) announced that it has slashed 94 jobs. Earlier during the year, peers Cigna Corp. (CI) cut 1,100 jobs and Wellpoint Inc. eliminated nearly 1,500 jobs.

Recently, Humana Military Healthcare Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Humana Inc. (HUM), announced the availability of an additional benefit for the beneficiaries of the TRICARE program (a medical program under the Department of Defense) in the South Region.

Humana Military Healthcare Services offers health insurance coverage under the TRICARE program to the dependents of active duty military personnel and retired military personnel coupled with their dependents. Humana Military has been a contractor of the Department of Defense for the administration of the TRICARE program since Jul 1, 1996.

The new benefit provides the families of soldiers enrolled in the TRICARE program access to a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Management Program. They will be able to call a dedicated registered nurse and receive education and coaching on how to deal with this lung disease which blocks airflow thereby resulting in breathing difficulties.

Humana started offering this new program from Oct 1, 2009. Beneficiaries of the new program will undergo coaching sessions on cessation of smoking, avoidance of secondhand smoke, self management, exercise, proper use of oxygen, adherence to proper medication and understanding the purpose behind it.

Furthermore, they will also have access to information regarding the symptoms of infection, when to call their physician or seek emergency treatment, and resources for stress management. Humana’s subsidiary also provides disease-management services for heart failure, asthma and diabetes.

Humana, which provides health and supplemental benefit plans for employer groups, government benefit programs and individuals in the US, competes with players such as Aetna Inc. (AET), Cigna Corp. (CI) and Unitedhealth Group, Inc. (UNH). Currently, we are Neutral on Humana.
Read the full analyst report on "HUM"
Read the full analyst report on "AET"
Read the full analyst report on "CI"
Read the full analyst report on "UNH"
Zacks Investment Research

Recently Humana Inc. (HUM) announced that its Medicare coverage in 3 California countries is expanding. Members eligible for Medicare in Fresno , San Bernardino and Riverside can enroll in a Humana Gold Plus health maintenance organization (HMO) plan. Coverage would be effective from Jan. 1, 2010.

The expansion has been approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The gold plus plan acts as a supplemental coverage to Medicare. Members can choose a primary care physician in the plan network.

The other benefits of the plan include no or low monthly plan premiums, low co-payments for visits to doctors and annual routine physicals, coverage for most annual screenings at no charge, and worldwide emergency coverage. The persons opting for this plan will enjoy discounts on vision and hearing care, prescriptions, and complimentary and alternative medicine.

The period for enrollment to the Humana Gold Plus HMO plan stretches from November 15 till Dec. 31, 2009. However, participants in the Medicare Part D program can enroll till March 31, 2010. The Medicare program is a federal program offering hospital and medical insurance benefits to persons aged 65 and above, in addition to some disabled persons below 65 years of age.

Through this expansion, Humana is looking to provide wider choice to meet the changing needs of senior citizens and disabled people. Humana, which provides health and supplemental benefit plans for employer groups, government benefit programs and individuals in the US, competes with players such as Aetna Inc. (AET), Cigna Corp. (CI) and Unitedhealth Group, Inc. (UNH).

U.S. stocks rose for a fifth day on Thursday as a larger than expected drop in U.S. jobless claims and an upbeat forecast from consumer goods maker Procter & Gamble added to enthusiasm that the economy is on track for a rebound. Energy shares advanced, helped by rising forecasts for oil demand. Nevertheless, given September’s weak track record, market participants have been bracing for a pullback.

On Thursday, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 80.26 points, or 0.8%, to 9,627.48, its highest close since October 6. The broader S&P 500 index advanced 10.77 points, or 1%, to 1,044.14, its first five-day climb since November. The Nasdaq composite index rose 23.63 points, or 1.2%, to 2,084.02. With traders eschewing safe havens, yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 3.35%. The yield on the 30-year notes declined to 4.20%.

As the holiday-shortened week comes to an end today, investors would look toward extending gains into a sixth consecutive day, buoyed partly by strong reports from China. This morning’s stock futures show shares opening with modest gains. Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 9, or 0.1%, to 9,614. Standard & Poor's 500 index futures rose 1.60, or 0.2%, to 1,039.00, while Nasdaq 100 index futures rose 3.00, or 0.2%, to 1,685.75.

Treasury Secretary Geithner was more forthcoming in a speech before Congress Thursday, as he noted the strategy has shifted to preparing for future growth, adding the economy is back from the brink. Geithner advised, "We must continue reinforcing the recovery until it is self-supporting and led by private demand."

Thursday saw all ten S&P500 sectors moving higher, led by 2.2% gains in telecom shares, 1.7% in basic materials, 1.6% in oil and gas, 1.4% in tech, and 1.2% in consumer services. On the New York Stock Exchange, volume picked up to 1.49 billion shares as advancing issues outpaced decliners by a 3-to-1 margin.

Among DJIA components, Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) shares jumped 4.2% after the company raised its 2010 profit outlook to $3.99 to $4.12. Shares in Disney (NYSE:DIS) jumped 5.2% after the company reported strengthening ad markets, and hopes from improving consumer-spending trends. Technology issues rose on increased estimates for top and bottom line results from Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN) and ASML Holdings (NASDAQ:ASML); on the DJIA Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) shares advanced 3.5%. Cigna Corp (NYSE:CI) led healthcare issues higher even as President Obama's speech appeared to have garnered support for his much-talked healthcare initiative.

News from China indicated a V-shaped recovery underway in that country as the National Statistics Bureau reported investments, industrial output and credit expanded in August, alleviating to some extent fears that the government was clamping down on credit growth. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao noted, "China's economic rebound is unstable, unbalanced and not yet solid," adding, "We cannot and will not change the direction of our policy when conditions aren't appropriate." The Shanghai Composite closed up 2.2% Friday, with the Hang Seng at its highest in over a year.
Zacks Investment Research

Democrats in Congress have asked the nation’s biggest health insurers to provide data on executive compensation and bonus, profit margins, corporate retreats and spending and premium charges as part of its investigation of the private health insurance industry.

The inquiry is in an effort to change the debate to focus on health insurers rather than focusing on the solutions to health care concerns. There was also dispute over the creation of a government-run health system along private insurers. The Democrats are trying to examine whether business practices of the industry oppose Obama’s proposal for a public health insurance plan.

The US House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman Henry Waxman sent letters to 52 insurance companies on Monday, asking them to provide details on CEO pay, profit and other data by next month. These include American International Group Inc. (AIG), Hartford Financial Services (HIG), Aetna Inc. (AET), Aflac Inc. (AFL), Humana Inc. (HUM) and Cigna Corp. (CI).

Banks and Wall Street investment firms have also faced criticism over executive pay and bonuses and corporate spending in the light of government bailouts. Even though some large financial firms have redeemed warrants issued under Troubled Asset Relief Program, most of them still have short-term debt guaranteed by the government. Thus, Bank of America (BAC), Goldman Sachs (GS) and JP Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM) were targeted by various political and media groups.

Read the full analyst report on "AIG"
Read the full analyst report on "HIG"
Read the full analyst report on "AET"
Read the full analyst report on "HUM"
Read the full analyst report on "CI"
Read the full analyst report on "JPM"
Read the full analyst report on "BAC"
Read the full analyst report on "GS"
Read the full analyst report on "AFL"
Zacks Investment Research

CIGNA Corp. (CI) cut its full-year profit outlook, sending shares lower by about 4%.

The insurer projects full-year earnings between $3.70 and $3.90 per share, down from its February forecast of $3.95 to $4.25. Analysts expect earnings of $3.89 per share.

Furthermore, Cigna expects health plan membership to decline between 3% and 4% in 2009.

For the first quarter, net income advanced year over year, but adjusted earnings per share fell short of the consensus.

This Zacks #3 Rank ("Hold") is moving on a lower-than-normal volume of 2.3 million shares, against the daily average of almost 4 million.

Fitch Ratings cut its issuer default rating on Cigna Corp. (CI) today as it remains concerned about the health insurer's equity and financial flexibility.

Cigna incurred huge losses from its runoff reinsurance businesses in 2008, which weakened its financial position.

A month earlier, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services had reduced its rating for similar reasons.

However, the agency raised Cigna's outlook to "Stable" from "Negative" and expects good earnings from the company this year.

Analysts are positive on the long-term prospects of the company as they have raised their 2010 earnings estimate in last week by 3 cents to $4.20 per share.

Cigna is a Zacks #3 Rank ("Hold") company.

Maverick Capital

Maverick Capital Management Holdings Analysis

This post is being written as part of HedgeFundBlogger.com's Investment Securities Tool which analyzes the holdings of hedge fund managers.

Lee Ainslie started Maverick Capital back in 1993 with $38 million. Nowadays, the fund is worth $10 billion. Ainslie, like many of the other fund managers I've profiled, has a background rooted in learning from legendary great Julian Robertson at Tiger Management. So, due to the fact that these proteges learned from the best and have had great success running their own hedge funds, I continually try to find a reason not to follow these funds. And, needless to say I'm never successful. Some contacts over at Maverick have explained that their hedge fund strategy is straight up stock picking, both long and short. They made it clear though, that they do not employ pairs trades. Although, some of their long/short setups might be in the same sector. They try to hedge their positions like a true hedge fund by picking out the shining stars in certain sectors, as well as identifying the pieces of garbage. Now, of course, this presents us with a problem in that the 13F filings only show long positions (unless they're holding puts on a name, we can see those). So, a good amount of Maverick's portfolio (the entire short side) is unbeknownst to us, because they have reported zero put positions. But, let's look on the bright side in that we can see all their long positions. Maverick uses a value approach (obviously learned from Julian) and one of their most popular metrics is finding companies and comparing their enterprise value to sustainable free cash flow.

So, now that we've got a little background on Maverick, let's see what they were up to. The following are Maverick Capital's current holdings as of June 30th 2008, as released in their most recent 13F filing with the SEC. Most notable are their changes within their top 10 holdings. Hedge fund favorite Qualcomm (QCOM) was Maverick's 3rd largest holding last filing. This filing, they no longer even hold a position. Additionally, they were selling off chunks of other top 10 holdings from last quarter. They sold off 33% of their position in Avon Products (AVP), which was their 4th largest holding just one quarter ago. They also sold over 51% of their Gamestop (GME) position, which last quarter was their 7th largest holding. With those positions vacating their place in the top 10 holdings of Maverick's portfolio, new holdings obviously took their place. America Movil (AMX), another hedge fund favorite, was Maverick's 9th largest holding last time. This time, they increased their position by 129% and it is now their 3rd largest holding. They obviously used the weakness in this name to add to their position, just like fellow 'Tiger Cub' fund Lone Pine Capital. Maverick also added heavily to Nordstrom (JWN), increasing their position by 136% and making it now their 9th largest holding.

Maverick was out adding to tech across the board. Apple (AAPL) and Research in Motion (RIMM) are their top 2 largest holdings respectively, as they boosted their positions in both by over 14% each. Additionally, they added to their Marvell (MRVL) position, bringing it up to the fund's 5th largest position now. Maverick also continues to build a position in Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), as it now is their 8th largest holding.

Among their new positions this quarter are First Solar (FSLR), Lorillard (LO), and CVS Caremark (CVS). I highlight these three in particular because Maverick started large, new positions in all three names. First Solar (FSLR) was brought up all the way to the fund's 6th largest holding after not even owning shares last quarter. They started a new position in CVS Caremark (CVS) and brought it up to the fund's 15th largest holding. Also, they added heavily to Lorillard (LO) as well, making this new position their 12th largest holding. This position is interesting because we also saw Lone Pine Capital (ran by Stephen Mandel Jr.) start a new position in this exact same name. And, actually, this is not the only position that both Maverick and Lone Pine both started together. In this 13F filing, we see that Maverick started a position in Hansen Natural (HANS). And, Lone Pine recently disclosed that they have a 7.8% stake in HANS. It's definitely common to see many similar positions within the portfolios of various 'Tiger Cub' managers who now run their own funds because they all undoubtedly keep in touch and come from the same school of thought.

One last thing I would like to point out is Maverick selling completely out of various consumer related names. They sold completely out of their positions in Autozone (AZO), Hanesbrands (HBI), Sears (SHLD), Starbucks (SBUX), Crocs (CROX), and OfficeMax (OMX).

You can view their most recent 13F as filed with the SEC here.

Guest post by Market Folly

Free Daily Hedge Fund Newsletter

Related to Investment Securities/Holding Tool:

Top 52 Most Popular Articles

Hedge Fund Tracker Tool

Financial Certification

Hedge Fund Forum

Hedge Fund Accountants

Investment Consultants

Investment Book

Hedge Fund Terms and Definitions

Geographical Hedge Fund Guides

Hedge Fund Database

Permanent Link: Maverick Capital Management 13F Holdings Analysis

Tags: Maverick Capital Management, Maverick Capital Hedge Fund, Maverick Capital New York London, Maverick Capital LP LTD LLC Inc, Maverick Capital Lee Ainslie, Hedge Fund
