CVS, FTR, CHD Second Quarter Stock-PR Report August 4, 2009

CVS Caremark Corporation (NYSE: CVS), today announced revenues, operating profit, and earnings for the second quarter ended June 30, 2009.Revenues: Net revenues for the second quarter of 2009, increased $3.7 billion to $24.9 billion, up from $21.1 billion during the second quarter of 2008.

Frontier Communications (NYSE:FTR) today reported second-quarter 2009 revenue of $532.1 million, operating income of $136.6 million and net income attributable to common shareholders of Frontier of $27.9 million.

Church & Dwight Co., Inc. (NYSE:CHD) today reported net income for the quarter ended June 26, 2009 of $58.2 million or $0.81 per share, compared to last year’s reported net income of $45.8 million or $0.66 per share. Excluding the previously announced plant restructuring charge of $0.05 per share, this year’s second quarter earnings were $0.86 per share.

The Economy’s Rapid Change – Market Analysis

Though the January employment numbers were ugly, they were not surprising. The unemployment rate jumped to 7.6%, its highest level since 1992. Approximately 598,000 jobs were shed. Bloomberg News calculated that we are in the biggest employment slump since World War II.

What is surprising is the pace at which the economy is contracting.

During the first-half of 2008, the unemployment rate averaged 5.15%. Since then, things have gone downhill. It took the employment rate just 9 months to rise from 5% (April) to 7.2% (December).

GDP has deteriorated at an equally fast rate. The economy grew at a 2.8% pace in the second quarter. In the fourth quarter, the economy contracted 3.8%.

Other economic data show a similar story. For example, the ISM Manufacturing survey plunged from 49.5 in July to 35.6 last month. As a friend of my said last night, it's not the economy that is hurting
