Future Options for Goldman

Bullish Bankers (April 1st, 2009) Writes:

Ever since the U.S. government forced the top U.S. banking institutions to take TARP money to prevent a total collapse of the U.S. banking industry, many have shifted  focus to Goldman Sachs [GS: 110.3485, +4.3285 (+4.08%)] and the company’s next move with this cash.  In October, Goldman was forced to take $10 billion of the TARP money.  Top executives at Goldman spoke out about taking money, insisting that they did not need any assistance, but graciously accepted the government’s money to appease regulators and the markets.

In February, Goldman was quick to state that it is looking to pay back the $10 billion back to the government as soon as it can.  Although Goldman had approximately $122 billion worth of cash and cash equivalents on its balance sheet as of November 28th, it won’t be able to pay the government back immediately.  The

Geithner’s Plan to Save the Banking System

Bullish Bankers (March 24th, 2009) Writes:

After watching the destruction of the financial sector over the past 12-18 months, I (like many investors) became a huge bear on many of its components.  I have been a big advocate that in order for the markets to recover, the financial sector needs to stabilize.  Without a strong financial sector in place, the rest of the economy will lag due to the lack of credit availability, and housing prices will continue to decline.  On Monday, Treasury Secretary Geithner released his Toxic-Asset solution to try to help restore confidence in the U.S. banking industry.  This plan has significantly changed my view on the sector and may be the biggest step, other than the TARP program, to revive U.S. banks.

The markets obviously applauded the move by the Treasury as many of the bank stocks surged significantly during trading on Monday.  Today’s leaders in the

China Blocks Coke’s Bid for Huiyuan, Jeopardizing Resource Deals in Australia

Contrarian Profits (March 19th, 2009) Writes:

Chinese regulators rejected Coca-Cola Co.’s (KO) $2.3 billion bid for China Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd., China’s largest juice company.

The move surprised many analysts, as it will make it easier for Western countries to prevent Chinese companies from acquiring overseas targets and discourage other large corporations from pursuing mergers in China.

China’s Ministry of Commerce blocked the deal saying the biggest takeover of a Chinese company failed to meet the country’s anti-monopoly law and would be “negative for competition.”

“If the acquisition of Huiyuan went into effect, Coca-Cola is very likely to take a dominating position in the domestic market and the consumers may have to accept the high price fixed by the company as they don’t have more choices,” the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.

Huiyuan Juice is a household name in China, and controls 42% of the country’s pure-fruit-juice market. Coca-Cola controls 54%

China Continues its Commodities Binge with Brazilian Oil Deal

Contrarian Profits (February 23rd, 2009) Writes:

China Development Bank, one of China’s largest state-owned enterprises, has agreed to lend $10 billion to Brazil’s Petrobras (PBR) in exchange for a long-term supply of oil - the latest illustration of how Beijing is using the global downturn to further its domestic agenda.

Money Morning first reported in January, that China was building stakes in some of the world’s largest natural-resource companies, which have been made vulnerable by depressed commodities prices, tumbling profits and falling stock prices. In the scant few weeks since that Money Morning report was published, Aluminum Corp. of China Ltd. (ADR: ACH), or Chinalco, has invested $19.5 billion in Australian/British mining giant Rio Tinto PLC (ADR: RTP), and China Minmetals Corp. acquired Australian zinc miner Oz Minerals Ltd.

China’s Commercial Aviation Sector to Enter ‘Important Period’

Contrarian Profits (November 13th, 2008) Writes:

“Airshow China,” the huge aerospace trade show that’s known officially as the “China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition,” ended Sunday in the southern-coast city of Zhuhai. It was the seventh time the event has been held.

But it’s the first time China’s commercial airplane sector has a long-term flight plan to follow.

Roughly $4 billion deals involving 102 aircraft were signed during the six-day event, which was attended by representatives of 600 aviation companies from 35 countries, officials from the Airshow China Organizing Committee told the People’s Daily newspaper.

But the real news was that China has set a timetable for its proposed “jumbo” jet, a passenger aircraft China plans to design and build domestically to compete directly with commercial jetliners built by industry heavyweights Airbus SAS of Europe and The Boeing Co. (BA), the U.S.-based airliner industry pioneer that’s America’s biggest exporter.
