DuPont Sheds Another 2,000 Jobs – Zacks Tale of the Tape

Zacks Market Commentaries (May 7th, 2009) Writes:
DuPont (DD) declared another 2,000 job cuts as part of its restructuring measures to counter the deteriorating conditions in the chemicals sector.

DuPont aims to save $225 million by the end of 2010, thanks to the restructuring plan.

The company stated that it would take a charge of $340 million to $390 million in the second quarter.

The chemicals maker had already announced a workforce reduction of 2,500 and also stated late last year it would remove 4,000 contractor positions.

The chemicals sector has suffered as demand from both industrial customers and consumers declined amid the global downturn. Last month, DuPont posted a 20% fall in first-quarter sales, which amounted to $6.9 billion.

The company recently cut its 2009 earnings guidance to between $1.70 and $2.10 per share from its previous view of $2 to $2.50 as it expects weak demand across major markets to continue this year.

Stocks Rally, But Recovery Still Not Here

Michael E. Brisky (April 21st, 2009) Writes:
Lots of speculation out there right now. The financial stocks are trading in wild swings as we sift through earnings season. We've heard from Washington that there are "signs the slowdown is stopping" or there are "glimmers of hope" for the economy in 2009. That may be true, but I'd rather look at the numbers. The big time US industrials usually tell the economic tale. I'm seeing weak results from Caterpillar, a href="http://briskycapital.blogspot.com/2009/04/where-is-simulus-money-going.html"which I already wrote about today/a. We also have weak results from Dupont. a href="http://blogs.barrons.com/stockstowatchtoday/2009/04/21/dupont-results-quash-hopes-for-economic-revival/"Here's what Barron's writer Bob O'brien said about this/a:br /br /blockquoteDupont has long been considered one of the classic early-cyclical bellwethers for the global economy. If conditions start to get better - in the auto business, electronics, farm economies - it’s going to show up on DuPont’s books before it shows up in the industrial production data ...

Top Performer for Wednesday: Ashland (ASH) – Zacks #1 Rank Top Performers

James Giaquinto (April 1st, 2009) Writes:
Ashland Inc. (ASH) shares have surged double digits today after receiving an upgrade from a major brokerage analyst. According to news reports, the analyst believes that the diversified chemicals maker is showing improved margins.

< ?DART(15);?> Its gain of approximately 14% on Wednesday easily makes it a top-performing Zacks #1 Rank company.

ASH's price has dropped significantly over the past year in the tough economic environment. With today's gain, the company is hovering around $11.75 a share, compared to its 52-week high of more than $58. However, if this analyst is correct, then the company may be past the worst of it and poised for a better performance ahead.

The past 30 days has brought some upward earnings estimate momentum for ASH. Expectations for this fiscal year, ending September 2009, are up 1.3% in that time, while estimates for next fiscal year, ending September 2010,
