Duke Energy Going Green – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 15th, 2009) Writes:
Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) will install four solar panels in North Carolina in the first phase of its $50 million rooftop solar project. The four projects with a combined 4.6MW of annual capacity are expected to be completed by March 2010.   Duke Energy is focusing on green energy in the light of recent progress in the American Clean Energy and Security Act. Duke’s Coastal Wind Pilot Project – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 9th, 2009) Writes:

Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) recently signed a contract with the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill to place up to three demonstration wind turbines in Pamlico Sound (North Carolina). Duke will pay for the turbines and their installation. The turbines will harness the power of ocean breezes along North Carolina’s coast.

Duke Energy’s pilot project is based on a nine-month study completed in June 2009 by the UNC for the North Carolina General Assembly. The pilot turbine installation will facilitate utility-scale wind energy development by enabling studies to optimize measuring and predicting the wind resource, quantifying ecological impacts and demonstrating turbine performance in tropical storm conditions.

Duke Energy has 634MW of land-based wind energy in Pennsylvania, Texas and Wyoming, another 99MW under construction and an additional 251MW of wind projects scheduled to begin operations in 2010. The company is focusing on green energy in …

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 28th, 2009) Writes:
Duke Energy Corp. (DUK) recently raised the size of its senior notes offering to $1 billion from the originally planned $800 million. Investors lapped up the notes due to their higher yield over US Treasury bonds. The company will use proceeds from the sale to retire commercial paper and for financing its capital expenditure.

Duke Energy issued senior notes totaling $500 million due in 2014 with a 3.95% coupon rate semi-annually and another $500 million due in 2019 with 5.05% coupon rate annually.

The company needs funds for its ongoing capital expenditures. Wells Fargo Going Slow on Wachovia – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 25th, 2009) Writes:

Six months after acquiring Wachovia Corp., the Wells Fargo (WFC) name and stagecoach logo have yet to be seen in the Kansas City area. Indeed it will not be visible till the next year. San Francisco-based Wells Fargo has been moving slowly to consolidate Wachovia Bank into its system.   During December last year, the brokerage firm Wachovia Securities became part of Wells Fargo. All 4,800 branches of the residential lender Wachovia Mortgage have been folded into Wells Fargo Home Mortgage.   Wachovia Corp. was purchased by Wells Fargo on Dec 31, 2008, when it ceased to be an independent corporation. The company had been battered by heavy losses – especially in its portfolio of flexible, interest-only home loans – and was suffering a run on its deposits.   The consolidation of Wachovia bank branches into Wells Fargo's network is scheduled to begin this November. The integration will begin

States of Unemployment – Analyst Blog

Dirk Van Dijk (June 19th, 2009) Writes:
Today, the BLS released the unemployment rates by state for May. It shows that the rise in unemployment has been widespread and few regions have been spared. There are now 14 with double-digit unemployment (27.4%) vs. none a year ago. Eight states have seen their unemployment rates increase by 5.0 points or more, and nine more have seen increases of at least four points. While all states have seen unemployment go up, four states have had increases of less than two points, and three of them were low unemployment states to begin with.  Only two states, Nebraska and North Dakota, have unemployment rates that are under 5%, while a year ago 25 of states did.The states with double digit unemployment include many of the nation's most populated states (CA, FL, IL, IN, MI, NC, OH).  High rates of unemployment will mean more loan defaults and ...

The first installment of “A Kind Word and a Gun” set a new record for passionate reader response. Now Jim Amrhein is back, and he wants to know how you feel about the Second Amendment (among other things).

Should the Big Three Be Allowed to Fail?

Contrarian Profits (December 8th, 2008) Writes:

The fact that after over 30 years of consistent mismanagement and decline, there is still any discussion on whether or not we should allow the now significantly smaller “Big Three” automakers to fail is clear evidence that Washington has lost all common sense. Why, when after more than three decades of continuous restructuring, GM, Ford, and Chrysler have not been able to change their culture, high-cost basis and ill-conceived strategies, does anyone believe yet another break would change anything? Are they going to be better off next year, or the year after that, or even five years from now? Just because their situation has become even more precarious, it doesn’t mean that they will be more successful going forward… more likely the opposite.

“The definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results,” said Albert Einstein.

The best thing that could
