Results from the ARBITER 6 - HALTS study showed that patients at high cardiovascular risk showed significant reduction in atherosclerosis after 8 and 14 months of therapy with Abbott's Niaspan plus a statin, the study's primary endpoint. The study met its secondary endpoint too. It was observed that treatment with Niaspan plus statin resulted in significantly fewer major adverse cardiac events (or MACE, a composite endpoint consisting of heart attack, myocardial revascularization, admission to the hospital for an acute coronary syndrome, and death from coronary heart disease), as compared to Zetia.
However, the results are not very conclusive as the patient population has been very small (363). In addition, the study was stopped prematurely after just half the number of intended patients completed the full study period.

The results of the study may hamper the sales potential of Merck’s cholesterol drugs further. This is the third time in the last two years that negative results have lowered sales of the cholesterol drugs, Zetia and Vytorin. Earlier, the combined sales of these drugs came under pressure due to disappointing clinical trial outcomes and a potential cancer risk. Results from the ENHANCE and SEAS trials, released in 2008 have significantly depressed sales of both drugs.

Combined sales fell 12% in 2008 and were down 7% at $1 billion in the third quarter of 2009.
We believe the drugs will continue to struggle due to the unfavorable data as well as increased competition from generic and branded statins, especially following the Lipitor patent expiration in November 2011. We have a Neutral recommendation on Merck.

Glaxo H1N1 Vaccine Approved

GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) recently received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its unadjuvanted influenza A (H1N1) pandemic vaccine. The FDA approved the supplemental biologics license application (sBLA), which was filed as a strain change supplement to Glaxo’s FluLaval seasonal flu vaccine. This means that Glaxo can now market its swine flu vaccine for use in adults to prevent influenza.

The company has already received an order for 7.6 million doses of its swine flu vaccine from the United States Department of Health and Human Services. This order is a part of the US Government’s intention to secure about 250 million doses to help fight the swine flu pandemic.

The current outbreak of swine flu pandemic can prove to be a big opportunity for vaccine manufacturers. In addition to Glaxo, other major players in this field include Sanofi-Aventis (SNY), Novartis (NVS), Baxter International (BAX) and AstraZeneca (AZN).

In fact, several companies including Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccine division of Sanofi-Aventis, Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Limited, the vaccine and diagnostics arm of Novartis, MedImmune LLC, a subsidiary of AstraZeneca and CSL Limited of Australia, have already received approval from the FDA for their swine flu vaccines.

Glaxo intends to start shipping its vaccine in December and expects to provide all the doses by year-end. We expect the company’s vaccine segment to post strong revenues in the fourth quarter of 2009. In addition to strong influenza product sales, the company has made significant progress in expanding its vaccine product portfolio. The approval of cervical cancer vaccine Cervarix in the US and Japan, H1N1 vaccine Pandemrix in Europe, and the H1N1 vaccine in the US should all help drive vaccine segment revenue.

JC Penney Beats on Low Earnings

JC Penney Company Inc. (JCP), a leading retailer of apparel and footwear, accessories, fashion jewelry, beauty products and home furnishings, recently reported third-quarter 2009 results.

The quarterly earnings of 11 cents a share tumbled 80% from 55 cents posted in the prior-year quarter, weighed down by qualified pension plan expense. Earnings missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny.

The retailer, however, mentioned that earnings outshined the company’s initial guidance range of a loss of 5 cents to profit of 5 cents a share on the heels of effective inventory management and lowered unprofitable discounting. Consequently, gross profit rose 1.9% year-on-year to $1,696 million.

On stronger-than-expected results, JC Penney raised its fiscal year 2009 earnings outlook. Management now expects earnings in the range of 93 cents to $1.08 per share, as against 75 cents to 90 cents previously anticipated. For the fourth-quarter 2009, earnings are expected between 70 cents and 85 cents a share.

Imports Surge in September

So what was driving the increase in the deficit? Part of it was that we imported more cars from the Toyotas (TM) and Hondas (HMC) of the world as dealers restocked after inventories were depleted due to Cash for Clunkers. However, for the month, the biggest increase in our imports was Industrial Supplies and Materials -- a category that includes oil. Oil is a big part of the reason why our trade deficit has been so intractable, and the decline in the price of oil from a year ago is a big part of the reason that we have seen an improvement in the deficit over the last year.

We started making progress on reducing our non-oil deficit towards the end of 2005, and until the last few months, have continued to make steady progress. However, as the price of oil rose, that progress was offset by an ever increasing oil bill.

The net result was that from mid-2005 through the summer of 2008, our trade deficit remained stable at a horrendous level of roughly $60 billion a month. As a percentage of GDP, it exceeded 5.0% in every quarter from the second quarter of 2004 through the second quarter of 2008, and was extremely close to that level through the third quarter of 2008. It was not until oil prices collapsed in the fall of 2008 (along with everything else) that we saw a dramatic improvement in the trade deficit. Now with oil prices on the rebound, the deficit is deteriorating rapidly again.

There are really only two solutions to solving the chronic deficit problem. The first is that the dollar falls, thus making imports more expensive to U.S. consumers and businesses, and our exports much cheaper to foreign consumers and businesses. Yes, a weak dollar would not be fun next time you decide to vacation in Paris. It also would have the potential to be inflationary. However, right now, there are big deflationary pressures elsewhere in the economy (for example, housing prices and rents), so a little bit of inflation pressure coming from higher import prices is not a huge worry.

Creating export-led jobs is much more important right now. That would help increase Investment’s share of the economy, and decrease the Consumer’s share. Over time it is vitally important that we do this.

One big problem, though, as far as the weak dollar is concerned in curing this cancer -- it is not weak against every other currency. Most importantly, it has been absolutely stable against the Yuan, and our deficit with China was $22.1 billion in September, up from $20.1 billion in August.

As a percentage of the total, then, it was 60.5% in September -- down from 65.6% in August, but still a huge part of the problem. It is also an issue that a weak dollar does not address (unless China stops pegging to the dollar and moves to say pegging it to a basket of major currencies, I doubt they will go to a full free-float of the Yuan).

The second solution is that we get serious about creating domestic sources of energy to offset the need for us to import so much oil. Since we have already extracted most of our original endowment of oil, "drill baby drill" is looking less and less like the right answer.

However, we have lots and lots of natural gas (NG), thanks to the new Shale plays. Our ability to switch from oil to gas immediately is limited. Butiven the cost differential on a BTU basis right now, there is every incentive in the world already for businesses to make the switch if they can. Strictly on the basis of the amount of energy in them, a barrel of oil should be worth 6x as much as an MCF of natural gas.

Right now, oil is going for $75.86 a barrel while NG is going for $4.42, so if a business has the ability, they could be buying the equivalent of a barrel of oil for just $26.52. That is a big incentive to switch. Over the medium-to-long term, it is easier to make that change. Only relatively minor modifications are needed to switch, say, vehicles to natural gas -- it's not like it is some sort of cutting-edge technology.

However, it is not free, and we do not have the nationwide refilling infrastructure to do so. If this differential persists, I would expect more and more fleet-type vehicles (i.e. city buses and delivery trucks) to switch over. This would obviously be a good thing for the big producers of natural gas like EnCana (ECA) and Chesapeake (CHK).

Enzon Beats, Announces Sell-off

Enzon (ENZN) achieved break-even earnings during the third quarter of 2009, better than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of loss of 7 cents but below the year-ago earnings of 1 cent. The company reported revenues of $44.6 million, a decline of 9% compared to $48.8 million reported in the third quarter of 2008.

Enzon records revenues from three sources -- products, royalties and contract manufacturing. The three segments recorded a decline of 1%, 6% and 56%, respectively, compared to the year-ago period.

Enzon has four marketed products -- Oncaspar for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL); DepoCyt for lymphomatous meningitis; Abelcet for antifungal infection related to cancer and Adagen used to treat severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID), commonly known as the "bubble boy" disease. Apart from Oncaspar, whose sales remained unchanged from the year-ago period, the other three recorded a decline of 4%, 15% and 10%, respectively.

Enzon earns royalties from several products, which have been manufactured using its proprietary PEGylation technology -- Pegintron, marketed by Merck (MRK); Macugen, marketed by OSI Pharmaceuticals (OSIP) and Pfizer (PFE); Pegasys, marketed by Hoffmann-La Roche; and Cimzia, marketed by UCB Pharma. The company earns a majority of royalty revenue from sales of Pegintron, which is approved for the treatment of hepatitis C. Unfavorable movement of the foreign exchange brought down royalty revenues during the quarter.

Additionally, cancelled shipments and discontinuation of customer schedules were responsible for lower contract manufacturing revenues. We expect contract manufacturing revenues to suffer going forward since many of the current contracts are to expire in the next two years.

R&D expenses during the quarter were $15.8 million, unchanged from the year-ago period. The company has several pipeline candidates: PEG-SN38, the HIF-1 alpha antagonist, Survivin (antagonist) and other LNA- and PEGylation- based programs.

The company’s financial position continues to worry us. At the end of the reported quarter, total cash reserves including investments were $201.3 million, down compared to $206.9 million at the end of December 2008, primarily due to the repurchase of $20.4 million of notes in 2009 offset by the cash provided by operating activities.

Shortly after announcing its third quarter results, Enzon announced that it has decided to sell its specialty pharmaceutical business to the Sigma-Tau group of Italy for $300 million. In addition, the company is eligible to receive another $27 million based on success milestones and royalties of 5% - 10% on incremental net sales above a 2009 baseline amount from its four marketed products through 2014.

BofA Extends $184B in Credit

In its latest quarterly Lending & Investing Initiative report, Bank of America Corporation (BAC) said on Monday that it has extended about $184 billion in credit during the third quarter of 2009 to support households and communities.

The report makes obvious how BofA is utilizing the bailout money to support the U.S. economy. According to the report, since the fourth quarter of 2008 when the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) was initiated, BofA had extended $759 billion in new credit. This represents almost $17 for every dollar of the $45 billion it received under the TARP. BofA also continues to provide a significant return on investment to the U.S. taxpayers. The bank is expected to pay more than $2.5 billion in dividend to the U.S. Treasury through Nov 16, 2009.

The extension of home loans continues to be among BofA’s priorities. The company extended $96 billion alone in first mortgages during the reported quarter. The loans helped nearly 450,000 people purchase a home or refinance an existing mortgage.

BofA is also extending credit to the municipalities and non-profits and has already provided $7 billion to help meet local needs and serve communities across the country.

Gilead’s HIV franchise has been helping the company post better-than-expected earnings over the past few quarters and we expect this trend to continue.

Biotech companies that could be acquisition targets provide opportunities for significant returns. Here, we would like to mention two companies that could be potential take-out targets -- Biogen Idec and Acorda Therapeutics (ACOR). In addition to holding a leading position in the multiple sclerosis market, we believe Biogen has the best pipeline in all of biotech and could be an attractive takeover candidate for pharma companies interested in biologics.

Meanwhile, Acorda is one of the more interesting biotechnology companies under our coverage. We have an Outperform rating on the stock. Acorda recently received a favorable recommendation from an FDA advisory panel on its key pipeline drug, Fampridine-SR, which could have blockbuster potential worldwide.

Bull of the Day:

CarMax (KMX) focuses on penetrating new markets through store openings. The company has kept its inventories closely aligned with sales trends, which has allowed it to optimize gross profit per unit besides offering great value to customers. These have helped the company to maintain a favorable position among its peer group.

CarMax has reported profit in the second quarter, reflecting a significant improvement from the Zacks Consensus Estimate. It has experienced a significant rebound in CarMax Auto Finance income to $72 million in the quarter versus a loss of $7 million in the prior year quarter.

These lead us to upgrade the stock to an Outperform recommendation with a target price of $25.

Bear of the Day:

Genomic Health Inc.’s (GHDX) lead product is Oncotype DX, which is used for early stage breast cancer patients to predict the likelihood of cancer recurrence.

Even though sales of Oncotype remain robust and the company remains optimistic about its prospects, we are highly concerned about the company's reliance on the product for growth. We believe that Genomic needs to expand its product portfolio in order to sustain growth.

Furthermore, we are also concerned about the company's weak pipeline. These concerns have caused us to downgrade the stock to Underperform.

Continuing Jobless Claims Fall

Continuing jobless claims dropped by 148,000 to 5.797 million, which is the biggest drop we have seen in this cycle. Even extended claims dropped by 71,000 to 3.893 million. Thus combined, there are now 9.69 million people getting unemployment benefits.

However, even extended benefits don’t last forever, and an estimated 7,000 people a day are losing that last lifeline. In Congress, the House has passed an extension, but the Senate continues to dither as the extension is being filibustered. After cloture is invoked, those senators who think that having millions of Americans suffering is a good thing (builds character, you know) plan to offer all sorts of unrelated amendments related to Acorn to further delay the bill.

This delay is not only callous as a humanitarian matter, but it is very stupid economic policy. If people have no income, and they have already run down their savings, they can either starve or turn to "extra-legal" ways of getting income. They certainly can’t be spending a lot of money at J.C. Penney (JCP) or Macy’s (M). The bank that becomes important to them is the local food bank, not Bank of America (BAC).

Extended unemployment benefits are among the best targeted stimulus dollars there are. They go directly to people who are in the most need, and to people who are likely to spend them quickly, thus creating a multiplier effect.
