Champions Biotechnology Inc. focuses on oncology drug developments and preclinical platforms and data to enhance and accelerate the value of those drugs. The company today announced an exclusive licensing agreement with Yale University and Southern Research Institute for the development of Bithionol for cancer treatment.

According to scientists from Yale and Southern Research, Bithionol, which is available for parasitic infections, shows activity against solid cancerous tumors and may be effective in treating melanoma, prostate, breast, lung and other cancers.

Per the agreement, Yale and Southern Research will receive an upfront payment, as well as milestone payments and royalties; Champions has exclusive rights for continued development of Bithionol for all oncology applications, and will use its predictive Biomerk Tumorgraft platform to determine optimal applications and efficient clinical development. Yesterday, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY) extended its cash tender offer to purchase all outstanding shares of Medarex Inc. (MEDX) by two days to Aug. 26. Bristol-Myers offered to buy Medarex for $16 per share, or $2.1 billion in July. However, less than 9% of Medarex's outstanding shares have been tendered till now. Last week, antitrust regulators approved the deal.

With the acquisition of Medarex, Bristol-Myers will get the UltiMAb Human Antibody Development System, which produces high affinity, human antibodies for use in a broad range of therapeutic areas, including immunology and oncology. On Jul 15, 2009, Colorado-based biopharmaceutical company Array BioPharma Inc. (ARRY) filed an investigational new drug application (NDA) with the objective of initiating a phase I trial in cancer patients with its most advanced, wholly-owned MEK inhibitor, ARRY-162.

The open-label, multiple dose study is designed to evaluate the tolerability, safety and efficacy of the inhibitor following the oral administration of the drug to advanced cancer patients with solid tumors on a daily basis. The study is expected to commence in the third quarter of 2009.
