Toyota May Suspend Car Launches – Zacks Tale of the Tape

Zacks Market Commentaries (March 9th, 2010) Writes:

Toyota Motor (TM) has revealed that it may halt new car launches this year if it is unable to be fully satisfied with correcting the accelerator problem that forced a mass recall of its vehicles. The cars that might be shelved include RAV4 2010, Auris 2010 and the Auris Hybrid.

However, the Japanese automaker is hopeful about regaining sales in North America in March after a sharp decline last month when the automaker suspended sales of 8 recalled models.

In January, Toyota suspended the sale of 8 models to correct sticking accelerator pedals. The models affected in the sales suspension were RAV4 crossover (2009–2010), Corolla (2009-2010), Matrix (2009–2010), Avalon (2005–2010), Camry (2007–2010), Highlander (2010), Tundra (2007–2010) and Sequoia (2008–2010). So far, Toyota has recalled 8.5 million vehicles.

In February, the automaker’s sales fell 9% to 100,027 vehicles. According to Autodata Corp., the automaker’s U.S. market share fell to 12.8%, the lowest since

U.S. Auto Sales Reach Bottom? – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (December 2nd, 2009) Writes:
The U.S. auto industry posted a flat November sales at 742,925 vehicles compared to the year-ago level, suggesting the market has bottomed. The seasonally adjusted rate was 10.9 million vehicles compared 10.4 million vehicles in November last year. Sales of cars and light trucks dipped 3% to 566,365 vehicles. Automakers tried to regain sales through discounts and higher sales incentives. According to the auto information website Edmunds.com, sales incentives increased 2% to $2,713 per vehicle during the month. However, this has not proved very helpful in melting the ice. The high unemployment rate was cited as the primary factor behind the lagging sales. Among the U.S. automakers, Ford (F) succeeded in sustaining a strong position in the market by posting flat sales at 122,846 vehicles during November. The automaker’s sales of crossovers, which imitates SUVs but with a higher fuel-efficiency, grew 26%. Its car sales rose ...

Toyota Faces Possible Import Ban Over Paice’s Patent Suit

Contrarian Profits (September 8th, 2009) Writes:

The bankruptcies of Chrysler Group LLC and General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GRM) provided Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE ADR: TM) with an unparalleled opportunity to increase U.S. market share. But now patent-infringement claims could result in a U.S. import ban on some of the company’s most popular hybrid cars.

McLean, Virginia-based Paice LLC has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) that claims the Toyota Camry infringes on its patents, Bloomberg News reported. An investigation into the claim could be completed within 15 months and result in a ban of some Toyota imports.

Paice, a developer of hybrid electric power train technology, in 2005 won a similar case against Toyota involving the Japanese carmaker’s Prius, Highlander and Lexus RX400h hybrid models. Paice claimed those vehicles used its drivetrain technologies, and a jury agreed, awarding the company $4.3 million

Toyota Steps Up U.S. Output – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 2nd, 2009) Writes:
Toyota Motor (TM) has released its plan to raise production in the U.S. for its pickup trucks as well as fuel-efficient cars by the end of 2009. A recovery in the housing sector and an immense demand generated by the Cash for Clunkers program are the key factors behind the increase in production. Toyota ’s full-sized pickup truck Tundra and mid-sized pickup truck Tacoma saw excellent sales in August. Tundra had its best monthly sales of the year at 7,872 units. Meanwhile, Tacoma sales were up 5% year-over-year to 12,547 units. The increase suggested an improvement in housing demand, as pickups are essentials in the construction industry. Toyota will raise manufacturing capacity of the Tacoma at a California plant. In the meantime, Tacoma production will be shifted to San Antonio, Texas (where Tundra pickups are produced) to ease the transition. Over the coming months, production of ...
