Maksharip Aushev Killed

Robert Amsterdam (October 26th, 2009) Writes:
mensenrecht_0.jpgToday's headlines speak of the bleak but sadly not unfamiliar news of another human rights activist being murdered in the North Caucasus.  On Sunday, businessman and rights defender Maksharip Aushev was killed when 60 rounds of bullets were sprayed into his car along a highway in the province of Kabardino-Balkaria.  Aushev is the third human rights activist to be murdered in the trouble spot in a little over three months, following the murder of Memorial's stalwart Natalya Estemirova in July and childrens' charity officer Zarema Sadulayeva and her husband in August. The Guardian adumbrates Aushev's trajectory into the sphere of human rights advocacy, prompted by the experience of his own son and nephew being kidnapped, followed by ...

Release of Eligio Cedeño is Ordered, Not Yet Fulfilled

Robert Amsterdam (October 14th, 2009) Writes:
The Venezuelan media is reporting tonight that a judge has ordered the immediate release of the political prisoner Eligio Cedeño - a client of Robert Amsterdam.  The trial judge has not yet responded to the order, and other decisions in this case have been routinely ignored by lower courts under political instructions from the government, so we will have to see if rule of law will prevail in the case.  As we have written here many times, the two years and eight months of pre-trial detention without any conviction of a crime represents a serious violation of local and international laws.  The following is my translation of an article published in El Universal:

Appeals Court Rules for Trial in Freedom for Eligio CedeñoThe Eighth Court of Appeals ruled today that the businessman Eligio Cedeño should be ...

Grigory Pasko: A Week in Almaty, Part 4

Yevgeny Zhovtis - the political prisoner of Kazakhstan

Grigory Pasko, journalist

During the time of my brief sojourn in Almaty, I met with many people - journalists, jurists, human rights advocates - and asked of them: what do they think of the Yevgeny Zhovtis case? One thing became clear and distinct from all our talks: this human rights activist is now widely considered as a new political prisoner of modern-day Kazakhstan - a state which although masquerades its commitment to democratic principles, regularly violates the rights of her people and flouts its own laws through its deeds.

Prince Alwaleed Remains Richest Saudi

Michael E. Brisky (August 29th, 2009) Writes:
As an investor I've always been interested in, Prince Alwaleed carries an interesting story. His Citigroup investment has been well documented, first as a wild success, and then, well we all know what happened to Citigroup in 2008. Today in Russian Business – August 27, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (August 27th, 2009) Writes:
Prime Minister Putin has proposed revamping the financing structure for the Sochi Olympics as a state corporation model has not proved to be wholly workable, favoring a return to the previous model used, the federal targeted program.  Inflation in Russia reached 8.1% in January-July.  Retailer Magnit's profits have skyrocketed from $65.9 million last year to $117.9 million this year, exceeding analyst predictions as its discount stores attract bargain hunting shoppers.  Central Bank data has shown that interest rates on loans to Russian companies hit a nine-month low in July.  The BBC reports on North Korean laborers working in difficult conditions in a forest in Russia's Far East for the Russian Timber Group, a company run by British businessman Peter Hambro and a Russian partner.  An article in the Washington Post suggests that GM's prevaricating over the sale of ...

Healthcare Truths

Investment U (August 26th, 2009) Writes:

Healthcare Truths

Ryan Cole, The Investment U Research Team

If there’s one subject that has a hysterical debate surrounding it, it’s healthcare.

The right is accusing the left of euthanizing little old ladies. The left is accusing the right of coldly killing the poor. And somehow poor Stephen Hawking would be dead if left to the evils of Britain’s National Health Service – which just happens to be the health service that has kept Hawking alive all these years (yes, he’s a Brit).

Nothing like a good political debate to bring out the hyperbole in people. And, like anyone else, I can enjoy a hysterical joust as much as the next guy – red-faced with the rightness of my position (whatever that position happens to be).

But, that’s got nothing to do with investing. Politics is emotion, with reason used to fill in

Honesty, Dishonesty and Competence: Comments on Posner’s Critique

Menzie Chinn (August 20th, 2009) Writes:

Richard Posner has a critique of public intellectuals who work in the public sphere (with special reference to Christina Romer), either in government service, or in journalistic fora. Mark Thoma and Brad Delong have already made clear the (many) points at which Mr. Posner has gone astray. Parenthetically, I'll add that I wonder about the analytical abilities of anybody who lumps Phillip Glass (!) and Elliott Carter together into the highbrow music category (see page 18 in his tome Public Intellectuals: A Study of Decline (1991)). More substantively, I have a few of additional observations, some of which are amplifications of Brad Delong's points.

First, I agree with Mark Thoma that Mr. Posner apparently has little understanding of macroeconomics, either of old-style Keynesian type, or the new(er) real business cycle type, or certainly New Keynesian approaches. His charge that her current pronouncements are at sharp variance with

Zhao Wei reported to be marrying Singaporean businessman

Raymond Teo (July 31st, 2009) Writes:

According to media reports from China, an insider revealed that Chinese actress Zhao Wei registered her marriage in Singapore a few days ago with a Singaporean businessman, and will hold her wedding dinner in October this year. Zhao Wei’s manager denied the reports and pointed out that Zhao is currently held up with work and will not be getting married in the near future.

The 33-year-old actress has been plagued with rumours ever since her debut in the entertainment industry. She was once speculated to have been involved with actors Chen Kun and Huang Xiao Ming. Earlier this month, Zhao openly declared her intentions to temporarily leave the entertainment circle to concentrate on her studies after the completion of the film Hua Mulan’s promotional events.

However, insiders discovered and exposed Zhao’s original intentions for a temporary departure for her own marriage plans. She is said to be registered to a Singaporean
