Buffett Borrows for Rail Acquisition – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 20th, 2009) Writes:
Warren Buffett, the CEO and Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)/(BRK.B), announced on Thursday to borrow $8 billion of loan for the acquisition of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNI). Berkshire Hathaway, which already owns a 22% stake in Burlington Northern, announced earlier this month it would acquire the rest for a total value of $34 billion. Buffet agreed to pay $100 a share in cash and stock to buy the rest of the company. The $8 billion loan that will be provided by JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Wells Fargo (WFC) is intended to be paid back in three years’ time. For Berkshire, the acquisition of Burlington Northern, or BNSF, the second largest railroad, will be its biggest to date. With it, Berkshire is adding a railroad transportation business with its already diverse range of businesses including retail, manufacturing and insurance, as well ...

Fed Announces Bold Measures – Analyst Blog

Charles Rotblut (March 18th, 2009) Writes:

The big news from the Fed today was its intention to buy more debt-related securities.

Specifically, the Fed will purchase up to an additional $750 billion of agency mortgage-backed securities. Furthermore, the Fed will purchase up to $300 billion of longer-term Treasury securities over the next six months.

The announcement was a surprise not only because of the decision to actually buy treasuries, but also because of the sharp increase in the amount of money being spent to buy agency debt. The Fed is more than doubling the size of its purchase programs.

This is a bold move and is specifically designed to push yields down and make credit widely available.

The markets are clearly applauding the move with stocks soaring. Financial stocks, such as Hartford Financial Services (HIG) and Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) added to their intraday gains. Cyclical stocks, like

Burlington Northern Balances Out – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (January 23rd, 2009) Writes:

We are continuing our Hold on Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNI), but decreasing our target price to $66. BNI reported 2008 fourth quarter diluted EPS of $1.79, up 23% year over year and above consensus of $1.74 and our $1.75 estimate, as expenses, primarily for fuel, were lower than estimated.

Revenues were also below expectations, reflecting a 5% decline in volume that accelerated in the second half of the fourth quarter due to the global economic slowdown. We are sharply reducing our 2009 diluted EPS estimate to $5.05 from $6.90.

Going forward, we expect that significantly lower volumes and unhedged fuel costs will offset benefits from rate increases and fuel surcharges. BNI recently increased its dividend by 25% to a $1.60 annual rate.

Burlington Northern Chugs Along

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 15th, 2008) Writes:

Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNI) reported 2008 second quarter diluted EPS before nonrecurring items of $1.34, up 18% year over year and $0.04 above consensus, but $0.08 below our estimate, as expenses came in higher than expected.

As a result, we are cutting our 2008 EPS estimate to $5.95 from $6.05, in line with the company’s earnings guidance of less than $6.00 per share. Our 2009 EPS estimate remains $6.90. We are continuing our Hold on the shares.

Strong utility demand and strong corn and soybean exports are expected to boost revenues going forward. Given the shortage of railcars, we anticipate freight rate hikes in the year ahead. Going forward, revenues should benefit from fuel surcharges and rate increases, partially offset by significantly higher unhedged fuel costs and flat to modestly lower volumes. BNI recently increased its quarterly dividend by 25% to a $1.60 annual rate, providing a
