Omnicity Corp. (OMCY.OB) Brings the Web to Rural America

QualityStocks (October 16th, 2009) Writes:

Omnicity Corp. hopes to do with the Internet what was done with electricity in the 1930s. Specifically, they hope to bring all of the benefits and capabilities of the Web to rural areas not currently served with broadband access. The goal is to build a nationwide wireless network that is able to deliver high-speed Internet access to rural subscribers in a more cost-effective way than traditional cable or fiber optic models.

Currently, only 38% of rural households have broadband connections, versus 57% of urban homes and 60% of suburban homes. Most homes in rural areas cannot receive cable television or broadband. Even DSL rarely extends beyond the city limits. And traditional dial-up service is simply to slow to run many of the Web’s newest programs.

All of this greatly limits the ability of this segment of the population to participate in

Omnicity Corp. (OMCY.OB) is “One to Watch”

QualityStocks (September 30th, 2009) Writes:

Omnicity Corp. provides broadband access, including advanced services of voice, video and data, in un-served and underserved small and rural markets. The company aims to be the premier consolidator of rural market broadband nationwide. Leveraging management expertise, Omnicity’s strategy is to provide a total broadband solution and continue rapid growth through acquisitions, organic growth and partnerships with Rural Electric Municipal Cooperatives and Rural Telephone Companies.

The company’s target markets are locations better suited to wireless transmissions than traditional hard-wire operators. It has been estimated that at least 40 million rural and small market homes, businesses, government agencies and schools have inadequate high-speed Internet service, representing a large growth opportunity.

Building a nationwide wireless network, Omnicity will be able to deliver high-speed Internet access to rural subscrib¬ers more cost-effectively than traditional cable or fiber optic models since hard-wire systems are gener¬ally much more expensive to build than wireless networks. Reduced network

How the Death of Big Telecom Will Reignite the Tech Boom

Contrarian Profits (September 23rd, 2009) Writes:

Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Verizon (NYSE:VZ) are dying a slow death…

Investors who realize this fact early could cash in on a brand new tech boom that could produce a new generation of high-tech millionaires not seen since the 1990s.

Comcast, Verizon and other government-protected duopolies won’t be around for your grandchildren to enjoy — at least not in their current forms. You see, companies like these are selling outdated services. And they’re more than reluctant to change their business models.

First, consider the home telephone. This beast is becoming scarcer by the day. In fact, mobile phone-only households are becoming the norm. Yet despite huge increases in wireless sales by traditional telecoms, it’s the wireline segment that keeps these blue chips in the black. More than half of Verizon and (NYSE:T) AT&T’s revenue comes directly from wireline sales.

For the old-school telecom giants, it’s all about infrastructure. They want to milk

Higher Costs Hurt China Telecom – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 27th, 2009) Writes:
China Telecom (CHA) announced interim 2009 results today with net income of RMB8.4 billion ($1.2 billion), or RMB0.10 per share, down 27.5% compared to RMB11.6 billion ($1.7 billion), or RMB0.14 per share, reported in the corresponding period a year ago.

This annualized drop in profit is primarily attributable to higher marketing expenses associated with the deployment of the company’s 3G wireless services and persistent decline in legacy landline business. China Telecom reported a 24% year-over-year rise in operating expenses for the period, largely due to an annualized increase of 60% in SG&A costs (including mobile handset subsidies).

The largest Chinese fixed-line operator reported revenue of RMB102.6 billion ($15 billion) for the period, up 14.8% year over year, driven by healthy contribution from its wireless segment which offset the fall in fixed-line business. EBITDA shrank 2.1% year over year to RMB43.3 billion ($6.3 billion) with EBITDA margin equating to
